W/C 18th May 2020

Monday 18th May

Photo of Dembe waiting at the window for his daddy to get home for his lunch break. DEmbe goes to the window everyday when Jay is at work at around 1pm. As soon as Jay gets home Dembe runs to his toy box and brings him a toy. He has done this since he was a tiny scrap of a thing. When he wakes us in the mornings he always brings us his Blue dinosaur which was the very first toy I chose and bought for him.

This video was taken on Sunday afternoon too late to be posted on his blog. The weather was lovely so we managed to get Dembe’s tunnel out and have him going through that out in the garden. He really does love his tunnels. He also spent a lot of last Sunday sunbathing.

He loves lying out on this bit of artificial grass and catching the rays. He will take out his chews and lie in the sun munching on them!

Tuesday 19th May

I had a terrible migraine today. Dembe slept on the bed with me on and off all day as I couldn’t get out of bed until late in the afternoon.

Jay told me later that day that Dembe had met up with the Great Dane puppy again. He said Dembe scampered off around a bend only to come back seconds later in full zoomie mode. Whites of his eyes showing, with the Great Dane Pup galloping along behind him. They went on to have a massive game of chase with Dembe running underneath it!

No photos of Dembe today as I was just too poorly.

Wednesday 20th May

Today is a bit foggy ( mentally for me) due to the migraine. I was really emotional all day and Dembe seemed to sense this and stuck to me like glue.

As Jay had cleaned out Dembe’s paddling pool I decided to refill it for him. Dembe went absolutely crazy like he always does when his pool is cleaned and refilled.

Dembe was running in and out of the house, up and down in the garden and then diving into his pool. We also played nudge with his football for a while. He got absolutely drenched and I used the opportunity to groom him as my goodness he is moulting at the moment.

Thursday 21st May

Dembe is very clingy, this migraine has really knocked me for 6 I am just so tired and feeling very fragile. He has patiently followed me everywhere around the house ensuring I am safe. Even though I have nearly fallen over him on numerous occasions.

My new bed set arrived today of course Dembe was the first one on it, not that I minded. I didn’t think through the colour choice though as when Dembe is on it if I look in the room quickly I can’t see him LOL

Friday 22nd May

I am still suffering after this migraine and Dembe is still my shadow bless him. He does make me feel much safer when Jay is at work and I am home alone. I am very grateful to have my dear Doctor Dembe.

I didn’t manage to get many photos today but I did get some cute ones of him in the kitchen just before he had his dinner. Today with his dinner he was spoiled as I gave him the sardines in tomato sauce that his best friend Sam got him. I know that they are both missing each other due to this bloody Covid -19. I can’t wait for them to meet up again when we are all able to.

Saturday 23rd May

Jay took Dembe out at 5.30am, gave him his breakfast and then went back up to bed again. Dembe woke me up at 8am. He stood at the bedroom door crying and wagging his tail. I got up and came downstairs.

At around 9.15am Dembe walked past me with his football in his mouth and took it upstairs. I chuckled as I knew what was going to happen next. I then heard Jay say “thank you” rather sarcastically as Dembe had gone in to wake him up and dropped it on his head! Jay’s lie on was over.

Hilariously after 15 minutes of Jay being up Dembe was fast asleep on the sofa beside him.

He has been such a cuddly boy all day

Dembe was very good today as Jay was late night. Jay popped home at dinner time to whizz Dembe around the block. We went up to bed at around 8pm and Dembe settled immediately.

Sunday 24th May

Dembe was a cuddly boy again today and spent ages lying on my lap asleep this morning.

I spent the morning mending Dembe’s toys that were broken through play not deliberate destruction. I also had to mend his bed as that had a tear in it.

Dembe sleeping in his favourite place, on top of his dad’s dressing gown.

W/C 11th May 2020

Monday 11th May

Jay’s first day back at work after 7 weeks off due to Covid-19. We were both concerned with how Dembe would cope as he has been awful when Jay has left the house in his Civvies, howling and crying until he returns despite the fact that I am still in the house. However as soon as he saw that Jay was in his work uniform he knew his daddy was going off to work and was fine.

As soon as Jay left for work Dembe settled down on the sofa and went to sleep. He did take longer to settle down for his mid morning nap ( Dembe not Jay ), he also took longer to settle after Jay had gone back to work after his lunch break. But considering what we were expecting – howling and crying he has coped very well with Jays return to work today.

When I went up to bed this evening Dembe beat me to it and I was greeted with this bundle of fluff!

Tuesday 12th May

Jay was day off today so Dembe was in his element , climbing all over his dad . I unfortunately woke up with a migraine, I think Dembe had known I was ill during the night as he was superglued next to me and followed me every time I staggered to the bathroom as my balance was shot.

Dembe and Jay playing all the time together it is so sweet to watch. Jay lies on the floor every evening and he and Dembe mess about and have bonding time.

When I lie on the floor to do Pilates it is a different story, Dembe climbs on top of me and uses me as a chewing post for his cows ear!

Dembe reminds us so much of Willow, one of our Weimaraners ( she passed away in 2017 after a short illness ) . She was a glutton but was very particular with what crisps / chips ( and before I get slagged off he gets them very rarely) Dembe is the same. He loves Walkers ready salted but doesn’t like pringles, skips, wotsits etc which is exactly the same as Willow. She would take them and then spit them out which is what Dembe does. He will sit and beg for your food and then when you give it to him he spit’s it out.

He does love his new venison sausage treats.

Wednesday 13th May

Dembe slept on top of me all night long, I am beginning to thing he recognises the pips before the 5am news on the World Service ( radio station) as within minutes of the news starting he starts crying wanting out for his morning walk . As Jay is late night this evening he took Dembe out, gave him breakfast and then went back to bed. Dembe is very good and will go back to sleep.

We had a good day together until 4pm when Dembe started crying non stop because he wanted out for a walk. Dog walking by companies is still very limited and following strict Covid-19 protocols, so for the time being Jay is coming home on his dinner break to walk him. I made the mistake of telling Dembe his dad would be home soon

He cried by the back door until Jay got in.

I was really limited with what I could do as I hurt my back in the afternoon and I am struggling to walk or bend!

Thursday 14th May

I was really out of it all day due to the diazepam I was taking for my back. Dembe was more than happy to sleep alongside me.

Here he is sat beside me whilst I am eating my breakfast, on toast watch!

In the afternoon I refilled his paddling pool ( nice and easy just sitting on a chair holding the hosepipe) Dembe went absolutely crazy. Running around in circles, jumping in and out of the padding pool, trying to eat the water coming out of the hosepipe. I managed to capture this classic photo of him just about to bark at me

You can see from this photo he is drenched, he couldn’t get enough of the paddling pool and playing out in the garden. I started to teach him to retrieve his ball from a cardboard box.

Friday 15th May

I didn’t wake up until 8am and Dembe was nowhere to be seen, today was Jay’s first early shift. When I came downstairs I found Dembe curled up on Jay’s dressing gown. He loves sleeping on his dad’s dressing gown. He stayed downstairs with me for 10 minutes and then buggered off back upstairs to bed!

He really wasn’y happy that the gardener was in next doors back garden and barked at him non stop. I had to bring him inside as he was barking so much at the poor bloke. He is hilarious with Ben and Kim the other side. If he hears them out in the back garden he runs to that side of the garden and tries to see them over the fence. Which he can’t as the fence is too high. He barks to get Ben’s attention. Quite often I hear Kim, Ben’s mum say “Sorry Dembe he is in his room at the moment”. It is so sweet as Dembe adores Ben. He also loves Freddie who is around 6 years old and lives two doors down. Freddie when he see’s Dembe says “hello Dembe” and Dembe trots over for a cuddle from him. This is a totally alien situation for Jay and I having a dog that other people like. Everyone was terrified of the Weimaraners, even though they never bit anyone or did anything they were just loud and large. Dembe is barky but his arse is in the air wanting to play and we have much better control over him.

He is obsessed with my lap at the moment and every chance he gets he is climbing on it. Regardless of what I am doing!

Modelling my crocheted blanket.

His dad took this photo of him sunbathing on Friday lunch time.

Saturday 16th May

The little sod woke me up at 7am and then spent the rest of the morning asleep beside me on the sofa!

Sunday 17th May

Dembe woke me up just after 5am, so Jay got up had a coffee and then took him out on a walk on the common. He gave him breakfast and then went back to bed. I was then woken up at 7.30am with a stuffed dinosaur being dropped on my head and being kissed by my hairy prince!

Dembe came downstairs with me had a cocktail sausage and then disappeared back up to bed staying upstairs until his dad woke up at 9.30am!

We have had a lazy day catching up on all the exciting household jobs and having lots of Dembe cuddles.

W/C May 4th 2020

Monday 4th May

It was a mental day today as he was on the go constantly. He just wouldn’t rest and settle down. Constantly playing with toys and demanding attention. Lock-down has spoiled him.

Jamie got this shot of Dembe this morning on their walk and joked that Dembe is the worst hide and seek player ever!

Dembe was thrilled today as his Kong replacement toy arrived today. As soon as it came out of the packaging he wouldn’t let it go. He has had one before but managed to loose it up the common. Hopefully he will be careful with this one.

He couldn’t wait to take it outside and dump it in his paddling pool! Everything gets dunked in the paddling pool. His kong toy and his paddling pool are his two favourite things.

He was quite barky this evening as he had worked out where I was keeping his treats and kept showing me where they were.

Tuesday 5th May

Dembe met a Great Dane puppy on his walk this morning and had no idea what to make of it. At one point he came charging back to Jay as he saw the pup galloping towards him. They had a game of chase with Dembe being able to run underneath the Great Dane without having to lower himself at all. Jay said it was the size of a small horse and as crazy as Dembe when they were playing together doing zoomies.

On his afternoon walk a little girl kept throwing Dembe’s ball for him and he kept bringing it back to her. We are just so thrilled we have such a lovely mannered dog that doesn’t really ( he very rarely jumps up, usually does it after I have told someone he doesn’t jump) jump.

Dembe likes playing nudge at home with Jay. This is where he nudges a ball towards Jay and then Jay taps it back to him. He will play it for ages and has got very good at getting it straight back to Jays feet. This is a game he has taught himself.

Wednesday 6th May

Dembe got his very first taste of ice cream from the ice cream van and he loved it.

Thursday 7th May

I have been really rubbish at keeping my diary again as someone keeps moving it. I need it out or at least visible so I remember to write in it everyday. Someone likes to tidy it away in ridiculous places and then deny ever having touched it! When I know it is only ever kept in one place if it hasn’t been moved. Anyway the diary entries are going to be a bit rubbish as there aren’t any for the rest of the week.

Friday 8th May

VE day 75th anniversary. Today is a bank holiday in the UK but due to lock down it doesn’t feel any different to any other day. One of the neighbours has put some bunting out but thats about it for the street celebrations today.

After his walk this afternoon Dembe slept on the lounge floor for ages.

Saturday 9th May

Today Dembe was manic again first thing, continually bringing me toys and being a pain in the bum by putting his head on my laptop keyboard!

Dembe was spoiled by his Auntie Heather today who bought him Codfrey the 2nd a usb charged reasonably life like gold fish. Initially Dembe wouldn’t go anywhere near it and then as we recorded he got braver and braver. Last night in front of his mate Ben ( next door neighbour ) he walked around with it in his mouth and the tail flapping against his face.

A few people were convinced it was real and I had to explain that it was just a toy!!!

Sunday 10th May

We are having a relatively lazy day as Jay is going back to work tomorrow after being off the last 6 weeks. I am concerned to how Dembe will take it as he adores his dad and has loved having him home. Plus he has got used to going out in the middle of the afternoon and will now have to wait to go to the toilet.

It is almost as if he knows his dad is going back to work as he hasn’t left him alone all day. Throwing himself over his lap, sleeping beside him and just wanting to be with him constantly.

Jay took some cracking photos of him this morning.

With Jay going back to work I am hoping to get into a better routine with things.

I forgot to say Dembe has been sleeping in my arms all weeks bless him. Which is fine until it gets really hot and then it is like sleeping in a furnace LOL x

W/C 27th April 2020

Monday 27th April

I have to come clean straight off the bat and admit I have been shocking at keeping his diary this week ( again) having Jay home is really throwing my routine out of the window.

We are noticing that Dembe is getting very bored. Thankfully he is not a destructive dog but he does bark non stop when he isn’t being stimulated and tasked to do a job. So we are trying very hard to think of things to teach him to keep him mentally stimulated and happy. He is missing dog training so much.

Tuesday 28th April

So after a manic Monday ( he was barking and bouncing off the walls) we had a very sleepy Tuesday.

We appear to be going in two day cycles at the moment, one day where he rarely sleeps and is on teh go constantly throwing toys and demanding attention and then the next day he sleeps pretty much all day long. There is no happy medium, it doesn’t matter how long he is walked on his manic days he still has mountains of energy. It is exhausting and can be irritating when a stuffed toy is repeatedly bounced off your face.

Wednesday 29th April

I have been exploring things to keep Dembe occupied and stimulated as obviously I know that the barking is a sign of boredom with him. I have signed up with https://www.spiritdogtraining.com/online-dog-training/ to help give us some guidance and ideas whilst we are no longer attending training classes as we are all really missing our weekly outings . The first lesson for Dembe was to teach him two commands but with one object. Apparently this can be quite difficult for a dog to learn as they associate the item with the command so it really makes them think.

So Jay brought a kitchen chair in and we started training. It also helped that Dembe’s new treats arrived yesterday freeze dried venison sausage which has proved a very helpful tool as he has gone crazy over it. We also got him a new slab of Elk antler for him to chew on as he does love a chew.

He picked up going under the chair incredibly quickly. He didn’t get the up on the chair bit at all but thats fine that gives us something to work with. Plus other than the garden chairs and the sofa’s he doesn’t really jump up on chairs. I managed to shoot this quick video of him going under the chair.

He was so pleased with himself and he really enjoyed the sausage. We also had a game of snuffles where I hid bits of his treats around the lounge for him to find. This kept him nice and tired and a lot less barking.

Thursday 30th April

Yesterday I decided for a laugh I would buy Dembe a remote controlled rat to play with. I have no idea where this idea came from but for some reason it did just pop into my head. I think Jay and I were like kids waiting for Christmas , watching for the delivery van to arrive!

It came just after 11am. Jay got it out immediately and set it up. Initially Dembe was terrified of it, leaping up onto the sofa to get away from it. Over the space of 5 minutes he got braver. In the afternoon we got it out again and I could video the encounter

He was going crazy for it and was trying to find when Jay put it away. I really wish we had a larger area for Dembe to chase after it . The barn where we go to dog training would be ideal!

Friday 1st May

The last few nights Dembe has been sleeping up on my bed either cuddled right up to me or beside me on the pillow. Normally he sleeps on his bed on the floor which is at the foot of my bed as he likes his own space when he is sleeping. It is so sweet that he is cuddling into me. I had bad insomnia on Friday into Saturday night and he kept me company.

Saturday 2nd May

I don’t know what happened overnight but Dembe was a blinking lunatic all day long, barking, throwing toys around barely sleeping all day. Again it is day two of his two day cycle and it is so draining especially when Jay and I have our own stuff to be getting on with. The barking was really getting to me all day. It was really hurting my head. Thankfully he did shut up in the end we tried everything, playing with him – lasted about 30 seconds and then the barking started again. Ignoring him, he just gets in your face and barks non stop like a spoilt child. Someday’s it is really hard work with him which I hate saying because obviously it means we are getting it wrong as doggy parents.

On Dembe’s walk this morning he came across 3 Black Labradors one of which was called Frankie. Frankie and Dembe really hit it off and were having a wonderful play running each other ragged.

We also had some fab news that Imogen who lost her beloved Bors a little while ago, has adopted a rescue dog who is just gorgeous. Dembe can’t wait to meet her new doggy, who has had such a horrid start in life and has now found his furever home with Imogen and her family.

Sunday 3rd May

An early start to the day with Dembe’s dawn chorus beginning at 5am. We are on the tired day cycle so fater going out and having his breakfast he has gone straight to sleep and barely moved since. We are hoping it stays that way today after all the craziness yesterday!

Daft dog slept like that for ages!

I forgot to mention last night Dembe managed to snaffle part of my naan bread by having it off the plate without me seeing. Little bugger!

W/C 20th April 2020

Monday 20th April 2020

I have no idea what it is about my crochet but whenever I lay it on the floor to measure it or photograph it Dembe has to climb on it immediately!

We had a quiet day today, Dembe is really enjoying having his daddy home all the time but is getting worse with separation anxiety whenever Jay leaves the house without him, even though I am home.

The highlight of his day was getting a new toy from his friend Sam who he hasn’t been able to see due to the lock down. He now is the proud owner of a Toucan!

Tuesday 21st April

Today we decided to get Dembe’s paddling pool out as the weather has been really lovely over the last few days and very hot. As Jay cleaned it out Dembe cried at the back door with excitement. He went a little crazy when he was finally allowed outside.

He was so excited he flaked out after his walk in the afternoon. He adores his paddling pool and will play in it as often as he can. Unfortunately his solar fountain was broken so we had to get him a new one.

Wednesday 22nd April

Jay took Dembe to Woodbury Castle this morning for a walk for a change and they had a good explore of the woods. Dembe liked the change of location.

He is still waking up at 5am every morning since it started getting lighter. Thankfully Jay gets up with him then as if I do I am really out of it and at risk of a fall / faint.

He likes playing a game with his tennis balls, footballs etc where he throws them and then catches them.

Dembe has played outside a few times today with Ben and Freddie. He now thinks he is the king of the street.

Dembe was playing with Ben next door over the garden fence. Ben found Dembe a tennis ball and threw it into the paddling pool for him. Dembe was trying to jump up the fence to get a cuddle from him.

Thursday 23rd April

Dembe looked after me first thing this morning as I woke up at around 3am with a migraine well under way. I managed to sleep the worst of it off and woke up with Dembe curled up against me on the bed. He had gone out for a walk, had his breakfast and come back onto the bed all without waking me. He stuck to me like glue for the rest of the day.

Dembe enjoyed clapping for carers again, barking along with the pots being hit and fireworks going off. He was keen to get Ben next door out again so barked at his front door until he did. He had a play with Ben and the foot ball again.

He is so good with the fireworks going off, they were really loud and he didn’t bat an eyelid.

Friday 24th April

Well after all those warm sunny days there was a distinctive chill in the air. It didn’t bother Dembe though as he wanted out in the garden whenever he could. He is now branching out and using all the chairs in the back garden to sit and watch the world go by.

Dembe’s venison sausage treats came today. Oh my word they went down well. Just as well as I have ordered him a load more – to up the treat value and I also ordered him an Elk antler chew as his antlers that we bought him last year are now getting quite small.

Saturday 25th April

I am sure that Dembe is listening for the 5am news on The World Service as it seems within minutes of that coming on he starts crying to let me know he wants his dad to take him out. I managed to get back to sleep and didn’t come around until 7.30am.

Dembe has been full of beans all day demanding attention and rarely going to sleep. It has been a bit of a nightmare as Jay and I have both have had things to do.

Jay put a piece of the artificial grass down on the gravel and Dembe loves lying on it in the full sun. He can also see Ben when he is in the garden next door from here!

I managed to get Dembes new solar fountain going in his paddling pool. It then rapidly clouded over! He did manage to get soaked trying to dig it out of the pool.

The first time all day (17.15) that he has settled down for a snooze!

Sunday 26th April

Dembe decided to chance his luck by crying at 4.30am, he was most surprised when he got told off by me and sloped off to his dads room at 5am. He woke Jay up at 5.30am. Apparently he had three huge dumps on his walk, which would probably be the reason why he wanted out so early.

W/C 13th April 2020

Monday 13th April

Last night was strange with Dembe at around 11pm he jumped up from the floor onto the bed and scrambled onto my lap. He never wants to sleep right on top of me as he prefers his own space. However last night he wanted held all night long.

Dembe’s walk this morning was at Woodbury Castle. He was going crazy running after his tyre. In the afternoon at a different location he met a cyclist with a dog. The cyclist said in a jokey way that his dog wouldn’t take any nonsense from a randy boy doggy. Dembe tried to play with his dog but his girl wasn’t having any of it. He came home and flopped onto the patio to cool down.

I’ve been telling Jay for months that Dembe runs to the front door when he wants a poo, now that he refuses to go in the back garden. He did this today and Jay couldn’t believe it. I said to him how do you think I know he wants out when you are working a late night??? It is nice that with Jay home he is getting more involved in Dembe’s care during the day.

Tuesday 14th April

He slept in my arms again last night. No idea what has triggered this enormous change in behaviour.

I woke up at 6am as Dembe was crying. I have taught Dembe to go into Jays room with the command ” go and see your daddy ” this means he wakes Jay up and leaves me alone! Jay got up and took Dembe straight out, they went to the model airfield. Jay said they had a massive game of chase and Dembe was loving it. It obviously didn’t wear him out though as he has been a nutcase this morning and all his toys are out of the box and strewn across the floor.

He did eventually settle down.

He was a bit crazy all day long. Really barky for ages today and no idea why he decided to start with the barking all the time again.

Jay gave him an hours walk this afternoon in the hope it would tire him out. He laid out on the patio again in the shade.

Wednesday 15th April

Dembe was back to normal last night and slept in his own bed.

He had a lovely walk with his daddy up at Woodbury Castle this morning. He bumped into a lady who was walking her two black Labradors . They stole Dembe’s ball and played chase which he adored. Dembe doesn’t understand why he see’s so few dogs these days on his walks. He really loves playing with and meeting other dogs. With the lock down not so many people are going up the common, plus the change in the law about essential journeys has been very confusing with many people thinking they weren’t allowed to drive to the common at the moment.

He has been having lots of play sessions with Jay, Dembe loves it when his daddy gets down on the floor with him and they have some rough and tumble.

Here he is with my sock that he had just taken off!

Thursday 16th April

Dembe decided this morning that he would have his first nap stretched out with his bum on my lap and his head on the foot stool . How on earth can that be comfortable? He stayed there for a good 30 minutes absolutely sound asleep.

Jay decided to give Dembe his leather football today. Which of course Dembe kept bringing inside, which is fine until he starts throwing it around …. So far no breakages but it really won’t be long.

Dembe joined us outside at 8pm for the Clap for Carers. It is the highlight of the week as he gets to bark as all the humans clap. He went and got Ben from next door and played out in the street for 20 minutes chasing the ball. He adores Ben and stood at their open front door barking trying to get him to come outside quicker!

Fireworks went off again and Dembe was absolutely fine which was good.

Dembe’s new treats arrived this morning, he now has chicken feet to have a munch on. He was going crazy for them. He also still loves his daily cows ear to chew on.

Friday 17th April

Dembe has been a really sleepy boy today and very cuddly.

Jay has been teaching Dembe how to play nudge with his football. Jay rolls the football to Dembe and gets him to nudge it back to him using his nose. I have been training Dembe to touch his nose to my palm on the command “touch”. He really loves playing the touch game but it is probably the bits of cocktail sausage that he is really enjoying! He likes to be kept occupied and barks more when he is bored. So by teaching them these games we distract him from barking.

Despite the wet weather Dembe still likes getting in his favourite chair in the garden.

Although Dembe has been back to sleeping on the floor every night at around 9 or 10pm he is coming up on the bed and climbing onto my legs / lap and having a cuddle.

Saturday 18th April

I have finally managed to get a photo of Dembe sleeping with his tongue out!

A brilliant week as Jay has managed to lose both of Dembe’s toys on the common this week!

Dembe refused to move as my bed was changed so it was made around him.

Sunday 19th April

Dembe modelling a baby bib I made yesterday.

W/C 6th April 2020

Monday 6th April 2020

Sunday night we had some fun in the garden with his blue dinosaur. I managed to capture some lovely photos.

Dembe was ridiculously cuddly on Monday morning. He spent the first couple of hours that we were up snuggled up next to me.

He is slowly getting used to having his daddy home 24/7 and the clock change thank goodness. It was killing me him waking me up at 5am!

Dembe is loving the weather change and is spending lots of time outside in his chair.

Jay went out shopping today for the first time since lock down began Dembe got very upset crying and howling. Jay was gone for over two hours due to them limiting how many can go in and out of the store at any one time.

When Jay got back Dembe was beside himself with excitement and would leave him alone for the rest of the day.

Tuesday 7th April

Dembe had a nice afternoon walk with his dad and had the added bonus of being chased by a Westie which is his favourite thing ever…chase! It was the first dog he has met on his walk for quite some time due to the lock down.

Jay cooked Dembe some meals, he did a huge batch of Scoobies Stew which is one of Dembe’s favourites.

Crazy sleeping positions today

Wednesday 8th April

Dembe is moulting like crazy at the moment. Everything is covered in hair and the vacuum cleaner is full of it!

It is a 2 man job grooming him now as he rolls onto his back so you can’t brush him. Jay had to hold him whilst I gave him a quick brush. I got this glare for a few hours afterwards.

I made it up to him by playing a long game of find it bunny and putting it in harder and harder locations. I am also able to start directing the areas Dembe will search in by moving my hand and asking him to search. He really is very focused when he plays this game and it wears him out quite quickly. He doesn’t give up as easily now when he can’t locate the item.

Thursday 9th April

Jay and I have been upcycling furniture whilst he is off and Dembe has been such a good boy. He just goes onto his garden chair or onto the sofa and sleeps whilst we work.

On Thursday night at 8pm Dembe came outside with us when we clapped for the NHS. Someone let off fireworks . He was so good, it did make him jump but we made a real fuss of him and turned it into a bit of a game and he just lapped up all the attention. He played with Ben next door again – and he went into their house the nosey bugger. Ben was throwing Dembe a ball up the road when a miserable git of a neighbour came out and had a go at Ben telling him to watch his car. Ben wasn’t anywhere near the car but the neighbour is a bit mental these days and to keep the peace we took Dembe inside.

Dembe flaked out as soon as he came inside after his running around the street with Ben.

Friday 10th April

Today on Dembe’s walk he decided to pee on the molehills that he came across. Not on the side of them but right in the middle of the mole hills so the moles knew he had left his calling card! He has also started chasing birds now which is a fun game.

Today we cooked up Dembe’s other favourite his meat loaf recipe. We made loads and were able to top up his meals so that we won’t need to worry about them for a little while again now.

Jay and I did more painting outside so Dembe entertained himself.

After his walk in the afternoon due to the heat we gave him a hose down in the back garden which he liked. He was throwing his broccoli around in the garden.

Saturday 11th April

We painted the TV unit today so Dembe got lots of attention during the breaks. When we were painting he would sit on his garden chair and watch us. He has been so good at entertaining himself.

Sunday 12th April

We are all having a lazy day today as I managed to take my evening tablets first thing this morning. I have felt like I have had 8 pints of beer due to this. Not good. Jay went back to bed and whilst I watched a Tv show Dembe slept on Jays dressing gown with his blue dinosaur.

W/C 30th March 2020

I am afraid with upheaval of my routine I have yet again failed to keep a proper diary this week. Plus die to the restrictions on our movements due to lock down here in the UK there is no dog training or taking Dembe to the shops etc. So I just have a collection of photos from the week.

He isn’t in my good book currently as he found one of my quilting gloves and attempted to chew one of the fingers off. They are still usable just now with add ventilation!

Dembe is loving having his dad home all day every day. I dread the day that Jay goes back as we will have a very sad little boy here.

Dembe’s eye has become irritated again this week so we have started giving him his eye drops again. Within a day the redness settles but it is still producing some gunk so we will keep going and we have some drops from Amazon coming to help as well. I am starting to wonder if it is a seasonal allergy as my nose has been running with the tree pollen currently.

I am very thankful that I filled the freezer up with Dembe’s meals 2 weeks before the lock down commenced. Jay and i have chatted and needs be if we run out of food for him we will buy raw food for him to tide us over. He is still eating very well. Much better than he has done in all the time we have had him. Also with him having much longer walks he is looking much sleeker.

W/C 23rd March 2020

Well this week has been a shit show to put it bluntly. I haven’t managed to keep Dembe’s diary up to date due to the Covid situation. Hubby is now home from work for 12 weeks due to the meds he takes meaning he is at high risk of serious complications / death should he contract Covid-19. So this week it will just be photos.

As of Monday night the UK was put on a lock down which meant the end of dog training and the end ( before it had even started) of Dembe using a dog walking service. It has been hard to get our heads around it. Dembe is loving his daddy being home but he is having to adjust to the change in our routines. He is still as wonderful and gorgeous as ever.

Monday 23rd March

Today Dembe was definitely picking up on my anxiety about Jay being at work. He played me up all day long barking and just being very needy. Eventually he wore himself out. Just before Jay got home he went to sleep of course!

Tuesday 24th March

Much calmer today with us both home.

Wednesday 25th March

We decided to upcycle some furniture. Dembe decided every time the sander was on he was going to bark at it and try to sniff it! Not at all dangerous.

He was shattered in the evening. As he is now having two long walks a day he is much more settled in the evening.

Thursday 26th March

Friday 27th March

He is loving the dry weather and being able to get out and sit in his favourite chair.

Saturday 28th March

Sunday 29th March

Morning nap

I have to be honest we have had a very lazy day today. Cuddles on the sofa and snoozing.

Dembe was determined when his dad came home for lunch that he was going to take his sprout toy into the back garden with him.

He is loving his home cooked meals

Tuesday 17th March

Day off with Jay today. It is hilarious when Jay is day off mummy gets completely ignored. He has draped himself all over Jay today.

No visitors today as we are limiting our exposure to the outside world as both me and Jay are more at risk of a severe outcome if we come into contact with Covid-19. We are just attending dog training this evening and only that because it is in a huge barn and we can employ social distancing. We will be having a break after this term ends purely as we will be limiting social exposure.

Tonight at training we learned about canine enrichment and games to play with Dembe if we end up in a lock down situation. It was really good fun and Dembe really enjoyed himself. At one point Dembe managed to slip his lead and he did a a run around the whole of the barn, he looked like a streaker the way he kept looking over his shoulder. He went straight over to his mate Rufus who he adores and all he wants to do is have a play with him! Rufus’ owner was laughing her head off at Dembes antics. He gets so excited when he gets to play games at the training centre.

Dembe was so exhuasted after training he just went to sleep as soon as we got home.

Wednesday 18th March 2020

Well I was expecting Dembe to be like this all morning after last nights escapades

But his actual dosing lasted a very short time indeed. I ended up playing Find it with him for close to 40 minutes . After which I don’t know who was most knackered him or me!

Today was quite a huge day really as I finally bit the bullet and decided to enquire with our dog trainer about dog walking. This is for when Jay is working on a late night as Dembe simply refuses to use the backgarden to go to the toilet. Even having a wee now seems to be out of the question. Jay has started to take him out twice on a day when he is working late before he goes to work. But even then I am left weith Dembe crying on and off from around 5pm until Jay gets in at 9 / 10 pm. It simply isn’t fair on Dembe and it isn’t fair on me as it means my evenings are spent continually getting Dembe out in the back garden to go for a pee which he now flatly refuses to do.

I am also going to get Jay to speak to his friend at work whose wife runs a dog walking service and ask if she can pick up Saturday afternoon walks with Dembe as she could do with an extra client. She has had so many cancellations with people either being made unemployed or now working from home her business is being impacted badly. It will only be about once a month that Jay gets a late night Saturday but it will help Dembe and me and in turn our friend.

waiting for his dad

In the evening the dog walker come over and met Dembe . Dembe went absolutely crazy! Initially he was barking loads and then he went to his toy box and brought Phil his sprout. Just as Phil was leaving Dembe decided without warning to puke all over the lounge rug so that wasn’t at all mortifying.

He is absolutely fine in himself however I am concerned about his left eye. He seems to be blinking it more and it looks red. There has also been a bit of gunk coming from it. So a trip to the vets tomorrow for him.

Thursday 19th March

Poor Dembe has a corneal abrasion. Initially I had though he may have conjuctivitis but Jay took him to the vets at 10.15am and they could see a scratch on his eye. He has had an injection and eye drops put in.

He really isn’t happy about the eyedrops. I put the first lot in at 12.30pm and he ran up the stairs straight after and stayed on the stairs glaring at me through the banisters for 15 minutes.

He then came down the stairs and went onto the small sofa, huffing and puffing the whole time whilst flatly refusing to look at me.

I have booked Dembe in for some dog walks next week and one the week after. This is a huge step for Jay and I, turning Dembe over to someone else for at least an hour. But it will do Dembe good.

Friday 20th March

Dembe’s eye is still a little swollen and red but it is looking a whole lot better than it did. He was bouncing off the walls today . I have never known him so full of energy. Obviously the pain relief he was given at the vets yesterday knocked him bandy.

I did manage to get a little sewing done today at least whilst he had a nap upstairs.

He was walked early and again before Jay went to work, as he is late night today. But he is still bouncing off the walls. I thank my lucky stars this is the last late night I will have to endure with a whinning dog that keeps running to teh front door despite having a garden he can use to relieve himself.

Saturday 21st March

Dembe’s eye is now back to normal, no swelling and all the redness has gone.

Again he was absolutely mental this morning for about an hour after his long walk with Jay before he finally conked out.

He has been incredibly vocal today, barking and howling at everyone who dares walk past our house. It is a bit of a nightmare when all he wants to do is talk!

As soon as the clock strikes one Dembe assumes his position at the window waiting for his dad to come home for his lunch. As soon as his dad arrives Dembe then goes to his toy box and presents it to his dad. It is very sweet and you never know from one day to the next what toy Jay will be given.

Sunday 22nd March

Jay left the house before 8.30am this morning so that he could go and get shopping for both sets of parents. Both are self isolating due to this fucking virus and need bits and pieces from the supermarket to get them through. As Jay wasn’t in his work uniform Dembe kicked off from the moment he left. Howling and barking at the front door and lounge window. Hoping that his dad could hear him and that he would hurry home. I hate it when Dembe is like this as there is nothing you can do to console him apart from just getting him chewy treats as he can’t chew and make noise at the same time.

He did settle eventually and I managed to get a small amount of sewing done before Jay got home.

As soon as Jay sat down Dembe draped himself all over Jay to make up for lost time. He loves his dad.

Stay safe everyone xxx
