Well this week has been a shit show to put it bluntly. I haven’t managed to keep Dembe’s diary up to date due to the Covid situation. Hubby is now home from work for 12 weeks due to the meds he takes meaning he is at high risk of serious complications / death should he contract Covid-19. So this week it will just be photos.
As of Monday night the UK was put on a lock down which meant the end of dog training and the end ( before it had even started) of Dembe using a dog walking service. It has been hard to get our heads around it. Dembe is loving his daddy being home but he is having to adjust to the change in our routines. He is still as wonderful and gorgeous as ever.
Monday 23rd March
Today Dembe was definitely picking up on my anxiety about Jay being at work. He played me up all day long barking and just being very needy. Eventually he wore himself out. Just before Jay got home he went to sleep of course!
Tuesday 24th March
Much calmer today with us both home.
Wednesday 25th March
We decided to upcycle some furniture. Dembe decided every time the sander was on he was going to bark at it and try to sniff it! Not at all dangerous.
He was shattered in the evening. As he is now having two long walks a day he is much more settled in the evening.
Thursday 26th March
Friday 27th March
He is loving the dry weather and being able to get out and sit in his favourite chair.
I have to be honest we have had a very lazy day today. Cuddles on the sofa and snoozing.
Dembe was determined when his dad came home for lunch that he was going to take his sprout toy into the back garden with him.
Tuesday 17th March
Day off with Jay today. It is hilarious when Jay is day off mummy gets completely ignored. He has draped himself all over Jay today.
No visitors today as we are limiting our exposure to the outside world as both me and Jay are more at risk of a severe outcome if we come into contact with Covid-19. We are just attending dog training this evening and only that because it is in a huge barn and we can employ social distancing. We will be having a break after this term ends purely as we will be limiting social exposure.
Tonight at training we learned about canine enrichment and games to play with Dembe if we end up in a lock down situation. It was really good fun and Dembe really enjoyed himself. At one point Dembe managed to slip his lead and he did a a run around the whole of the barn, he looked like a streaker the way he kept looking over his shoulder. He went straight over to his mate Rufus who he adores and all he wants to do is have a play with him! Rufus’ owner was laughing her head off at Dembes antics. He gets so excited when he gets to play games at the training centre.
Dembe was so exhuasted after training he just went to sleep as soon as we got home.
Wednesday 18th March 2020
Well I was expecting Dembe to be like this all morning after last nights escapades
But his actual dosing lasted a very short time indeed. I ended up playing Find it with him for close to 40 minutes . After which I don’t know who was most knackered him or me!
Today was quite a huge day really as I finally bit the bullet and decided to enquire with our dog trainer about dog walking. This is for when Jay is working on a late night as Dembe simply refuses to use the backgarden to go to the toilet. Even having a wee now seems to be out of the question. Jay has started to take him out twice on a day when he is working late before he goes to work. But even then I am left weith Dembe crying on and off from around 5pm until Jay gets in at 9 / 10 pm. It simply isn’t fair on Dembe and it isn’t fair on me as it means my evenings are spent continually getting Dembe out in the back garden to go for a pee which he now flatly refuses to do.
I am also going to get Jay to speak to his friend at work whose wife runs a dog walking service and ask if she can pick up Saturday afternoon walks with Dembe as she could do with an extra client. She has had so many cancellations with people either being made unemployed or now working from home her business is being impacted badly. It will only be about once a month that Jay gets a late night Saturday but it will help Dembe and me and in turn our friend.
In the evening the dog walker come over and met Dembe . Dembe went absolutely crazy! Initially he was barking loads and then he went to his toy box and brought Phil his sprout. Just as Phil was leaving Dembe decided without warning to puke all over the lounge rug so that wasn’t at all mortifying.
He is absolutely fine in himself however I am concerned about his left eye. He seems to be blinking it more and it looks red. There has also been a bit of gunk coming from it. So a trip to the vets tomorrow for him.
Thursday 19th March
Poor Dembe has a corneal abrasion. Initially I had though he may have conjuctivitis but Jay took him to the vets at 10.15am and they could see a scratch on his eye. He has had an injection and eye drops put in.
He really isn’t happy about the eyedrops. I put the first lot in at 12.30pm and he ran up the stairs straight after and stayed on the stairs glaring at me through the banisters for 15 minutes.
He then came down the stairs and went onto the small sofa, huffing and puffing the whole time whilst flatly refusing to look at me.
I have booked Dembe in for some dog walks next week and one the week after. This is a huge step for Jay and I, turning Dembe over to someone else for at least an hour. But it will do Dembe good.
Friday 20th March
Dembe’s eye is still a little swollen and red but it is looking a whole lot better than it did. He was bouncing off the walls today . I have never known him so full of energy. Obviously the pain relief he was given at the vets yesterday knocked him bandy.
I did manage to get a little sewing done today at least whilst he had a nap upstairs.
He was walked early and again before Jay went to work, as he is late night today. But he is still bouncing off the walls. I thank my lucky stars this is the last late night I will have to endure with a whinning dog that keeps running to teh front door despite having a garden he can use to relieve himself.
Saturday 21st March
Dembe’s eye is now back to normal, no swelling and all the redness has gone.
Again he was absolutely mental this morning for about an hour after his long walk with Jay before he finally conked out.
He has been incredibly vocal today, barking and howling at everyone who dares walk past our house. It is a bit of a nightmare when all he wants to do is talk!
As soon as the clock strikes one Dembe assumes his position at the window waiting for his dad to come home for his lunch. As soon as his dad arrives Dembe then goes to his toy box and presents it to his dad. It is very sweet and you never know from one day to the next what toy Jay will be given.
Sunday 22nd March
Jay left the house before 8.30am this morning so that he could go and get shopping for both sets of parents. Both are self isolating due to this fucking virus and need bits and pieces from the supermarket to get them through. As Jay wasn’t in his work uniform Dembe kicked off from the moment he left. Howling and barking at the front door and lounge window. Hoping that his dad could hear him and that he would hurry home. I hate it when Dembe is like this as there is nothing you can do to console him apart from just getting him chewy treats as he can’t chew and make noise at the same time.
He did settle eventually and I managed to get a small amount of sewing done before Jay got home.
As soon as Jay sat down Dembe draped himself all over Jay to make up for lost time. He loves his dad.
Jay was on his usual shift, as it was pissing down with rain – his words not mine he decided to give Dembe a walk around the block. He was out for 30 minutes trying to get the little bugger to have a poo. He flat out refused so they both came back to the house soaked through.
I was a bit concerned that Dembe would be a pain in the bum having not been properly as today was the third meeting of my craft group. However he was really well behaved. We meet up fortnightly at our house the group can be just 4 or up to 7 of us. Dembe initially was getting very over excited as we simply don’t have that many people coming to the house. However with these regular meet ups it has really calmed him down. He spent most of the meeting ( 2.5 hours) lying at my feet asleep. I did try sitting on the pouffe but he jumped up and knocked me flying so I swapped it out for a kitchen chair. It was hilarious. Thank goodness I wasn’t wearing a skirt as my legs were up in the air and I was flat on my back having my face licked. Much to the amusement of my friends.
Tuesday 10th March
We have a busy day today with Jay day off. We have several friends coming over. As one of them is bring her two week old baby Jay is popping into pets at home to get some bulls tails for Dembe. He loves chewing on them more than being fussed by visitors.
As is usual when daddy goes to pets at home he buys Dembe a toy……like he hasn’t got any! So today Daddy bought Dembe a baby T rex. I sometimes wonder if Jay if fulfilling his childhood dream of having lots of dinosaur toys!
I did emergency surgery on a few toys – two crocodiles and a carrot. All damaged in the line of duty whilst playing tug. Thankfully he doesn’t sit and destroy toys.
Sandra popped over for a coffee late in the morning and Dembe was only too happy to have some cuddles with her. He was very calm as he had seen her the day before. It is really going well having lots of people visiting which is why it is so sad that with this Covid business we may not have many visitors for a few months.
As Kat was coming with her baby we decided we would take Dembe out and give him a nice long walk before she arrived so that he would be less energetic. He has met babies before but it was quite a while ago. He seems to be very tuned into people, like with Sam and when Sandra broke her ankle when he was a tiny pup, so is always very gentle. I am more worried about him accidentally hurting the baby. I am sure he will be fine but initially we will keep him in the kitchen to ensure he has calmed down before letting him in.
He had a lovely walk although was a bit muddy when he got back. He gets hosed off in the garden with no issues at all. Normally the Weimaraners would run a mile at the hose going on. Where as Dembe runs towards it, he still wanders into the shower cubicle most mornings whilst I am having a shower.
Kat arrived with baby Logan. It went perfectly. Dembe was curious and gave Logan lots of sniffs . He was very sweet, when I was holding Logan he jumped onto the sofa kissed me and then gave Logan the tiniest of licks. Logan was fine, I would have been mortified if he then screamed the place down but as Kat has dogs herself he was very good. Dembe was very interested in the car seat which is what happened when he was a puppy and we met baby Orla.
He was pretty shattered after his busy day and was having very long naps on the sofa only to discover that it was also dog training. Training this evening went brilliantly, he was easily the top of the class tonight. Very little barking, unlike the week before where he decided he would be a gob shite. He was the only dog when they were doing a sit stay exercise and then putting their toy down in front of them that didn’t break his stay. Also Martin the trainer came up and told Jay out of all the dogs, Dembe was the only one who wouldn’t be distracted when they were having a play session. Our training sessions are broken up with regular plays sessions for a few minutes so that the dogs associate the learning with lots of fun. Dembe and Jay have a whale of a time when they start playing and all he wants is Jay. The other dogs all get easily distracted even when playing with their owners. Jay and I pride ourselves that no matter how tired we are or how shitty we are feeling Dembe has at least one play session a day with us. It could be we find it – which is really a training session dressed up as playtime, it could be chase, cuddles and tug of war. Anything at all that strengthens the bond between us.
I have also over the months slowly disengaged from Dembe when he is in training so that when Jay does any exercise when he is off the lead he doesn’t bolt back to me. I am no longer the distraction I was to him. It is hard especially when he has done really well during an exercise as all I want to do is cuddle him and tell him what a star he has been.
Wednesday 11th March
Jay is late night tonight, so Dembe has had an early walk. He will get another walk at around 11am to ensure he has done as much of his business as possible before Jay goes to work. We have had a lazy morning and Dembe is absolutely shattered after yesterday!
I have managed to crack on with some sewing this afternoon and made Dembe some new treat bags for dog training class.
I made the prototypes of these last summer and the last one finally broke last night. I am amazed it has lasted as long as it did. I have made a few of these recently as presents and it was only after the one broke last night that I realised that Dembe only had the generic Good Boy one I made and had never had one that was personalised for him. I put #Team Dembe due to that’s what we are called at dog training.
As Jay is late night I ended up playing find it bunny with Dembe for ages. He just keeps going and going. I was having to stay up waiting for a delivery ( which never arrived) so Dembe was convinced his dad would be home soon and kept going to the door.
This is when I start to feel useless as I can’t walk him and although he has access to the garden he is refusing more and more to use it eve for going for a wee. Eventually I did get him to go. But he went for loads of wee’s when Jay took him out when he got home.
Thursday 12th March
As Jay was on a 9-6 today Dembe got a nice long walk on the common before he went to work. It has been dry for a few days so for a change he didn’t need washed off. When he got back I gave him his breakfast. Jay couldn’t believe how quickly he ate it and then licked the bowl clean. It is safe to say he is enjoying this new batch of food. Back in January when I started cooking for him I never imagined that he would enjoy it this much. I was worried I would be left with a freezer full of dog food that after 4 weeks he went off. Thankfully that hasn’t been the case.
I did some more sewing today but had regular breaks so I could have Dembe cuddles. He hates it when Jay is on a 9-6 shift, so from 5pm was quite hard work.
As soon as he saw me get the coats out he knew his dad was coming home. So he spent the next 5 minutes at the window waiting for his dad.
It was really light this evening so it was quite busy at the airfield. Today he had a lovely walk with a black Labrador the same age as him called Luna. They were running around like crazy, although he refused to follow Luna into the gorse bushes, he has never been a fan of going off the path. By the time he and Jay got back to the car he was utterly exhausted. I do love it when he has had a chance to have some fun with another dog as he loves to play.
Friday 13th March
Dembe had one of his days where he slept the majority of the day, so I cracked on with some sewing that I wanted to do.
As Jay was on another 9-6 shift he took Dembe out before he went to work up to Woodbury Castle. He said it was deserted and they had a nice long walk. By the time Jay got back is was torrential rain. Dembe was a bit better today waiting for Jay to get home, although he was keen to get out even with the rain. I got his coat on ready for when Jay got in so he could go straight out.
Saturday 14th March
Jay is on an early shift today, as it was dry he took Dembe up the common and gave him a proper run about before heading into work. However when I finally got up at around 7am you would have thought Dembe had never been out as he was like a coiled spring. Bringing me toy after toy attempting to get me to play with hims whilst I was struggling to wake up.
No sewing this morning I need a rest from it. So I have spent the morning updating Dembe’s blog from the hard copy I keep onto his blog ready for Monday when it will be published. My little puddin’ has slept beside me on the sofa for most of the morning.
Dembe has slept most of the day although he went absolutely mental when his dad came home. He had another lovely walk playing with another doggy friend.
Sunday 15th March
We are all having a quiet day. Due to the current Covid-19 issue we are limiting our contact with the outside world as much as possible.
Dembe and I had a very quiet day today as we were both shattered after helping dad with the decorating last week. I am sure Jay went back to work for a rest. I was so knackered I went up to bed for a nap at 2pm and slept until 4.30pm.
Dembe was so good and got straight back into the routine of Jay being in work. He is quite like Mollie in that he knows the difference between his dad in his work uniform and dad in his civvies and what it means.
I took a couple of good photos on Sunday.
Tuesday 3rd March
Dembe was taken up the common by Jay nice and early. They went to the model airfield where they met an elderly chocolate Labrador. The old boy was more than happy to play with Dembe although he did struggle to keep up with him.
I had the doctors at 10.10am so Jay and Dembe dropped me off and had a wander around town. He went around the market where the pet shop stall were feeding hims sausage! He also went into a friends shop, which is also great experience for him. It was very busy down the town and lots of noisy traffic. It didn’t phase him which was great as it means our early environment training has paid off.
We had dog training this evening, after a week of reduced barking Dembe decided to be a gobshite. In the end Martin came over and got him to be quiet. It is for attention and when he gets bored, wants you to play etc. So at dog training he hates standing around doing nothing. SO I have asked Jay in future when Martin is talking to do sit and stay exercises with Dembe. That way he thinks he is still working and he should be quiet. He never barks on a walk or when moving at dog training. It purely is a boredom thing. At home he liked to bark if he felt Jay and I were ignoring him but he has stopped doing that now.
About 20 minutes into the session the barking was under control. Dembe seems to need a 30 minute warm up before he is in the right place to learn. Which is strange as he gets a walk before he goes, I think however as he sees his mates before class maybe he gets too excited and it takes time for him to get back into the learning zone. By the end of the lesson Dembe and Jay were working beautifully together. It was so choreographed they looked like they were dancing or working to music.
I do worry that we expect an awful lot from him when he still is only a babe in arms at 15 months. Mind you however old he is he will always be our puppy.
Wednesday 4th March
Dembe decided this morning that we all needed to be out of bed at 5.45am which made him supremely popular! By 7.15am I was hanging out of my arse! He however was beside me on the sofa snoring his head off the little bugger.
I am so pleased with how he is getting on with his home cooked meals. What a joy it is now to feed him, I no longer get so stressed out and upset that he isn’t eating properly. He is looking fab and he is definitely moulting less since changing him over to the majority of his meals being fresh food.
Today Uncle Paul came over. Dembe always gets over excited when Paul comes to visit so I put him in the kitchen and shut the baby gate before letting Paul in. I kept him behind the gate until I knew he was calm. He let me down on the barking front but that was because he had slept all bloody morning and was now wide awake and raring to go.
I got a great photo of Dembe sleeping in the afternoon
As I crept up on him I started to take photos. This next photo as he wakes up and sees me is hilarious
Every time I look at the photo I can’t stop laughing. His face is so funny!
Thursday 5th March
Jay was on an early today so he took him on a walk around the streets, Dembe refused to go for a poo, which was a bit silly as he won’t be going out again until Jay gets home tonight. Although he does have access to the garden.
I got some sewing done in the morning but I managed to mess up my neck, so by 2pm I have a crippling headache. I can barely string a sentence together so Dembe and I went up to bed. Dembe was a super star, he was a bit perturbed by my oxygen being on for so long and came and gave my nasal cannula a good sniff. He then settled down and went to sleep on my bed.
I got up at 4.30pm as I knew Jay was coming home at 5pm. Dembe and I sat by the window.
Friday 6th March
Jay is on a late today so he took Dembe out for a nice long walk to ensure he would be ok for the rest of the day. Jay will be taking him out again when he gets home at around 10pm and Dembe has access to the garden all day.
Unfortunately at around 4.30pm Dembe starting crying and going to the front door. It was clear that he needed a poo. I am unable to walk him, I just can’t walk very far at all. My mobility scooter was in the back of my husbands car and Dembe still isn’t trained to walk alongside me, with me holding the lead. So I had no way of getting him out for a walk. I kept letting him out in the garden but it became very clear I would have to get Jay to pop home on his lunch break and take him around the block.
Jay got home and took him out for 15 minutes. Dembe had two huge dumps almost immediately, so I was right he had been complaining that he couldn’t go for a walk. When he got back from the walk I was expecting him to settle but he didn’t we ended up playing find it bunny for an hour. By the end I had him finding bunny in the washing machine drum and from the tumble dryer!
Eventually he did settle at around 19.30pm. When Jay got in he took Dembe out around the block again to ensure he wouldn’t want to get up too early.
Saturday 7th March
Jay is on another bloody late. It is quite rare that Jay works two on the bounce , I just hope Dembe doesn’t kick off tonight like he did last night.
As he was working until late Jay took Dembe out first thing and then again at 11am to ensure he had got everything out that he could. On Dembes walk he was playing with a female black Labrador that was much bigger than him and had a whale of a time.
Dembe has been very vocal today
He has always been a very vocal dog, from about 9 weeks old he was expressing himself.
We are having to stay up later than usual as I am waiting for a delivery from Hermes ( so surprised it never ever turned up). So I switched on Crufts to see what Dembe would do, as you can see it didn’t stay on for long as he insisted on attempting to talk to the dogs on the tv.
Sunday 8th March
Dembe decided we all needed to get up at 6.30am. I managed to keep him occupied for 15 minutes whilst I came to and got some fluids and meds into my system. I decided to get up and crack on with Dembe’s food preparation for the month. I may have gone slightly overboard but I want to ensure that if the Corona virus comes to this house at least Dembe has food. All it will take is food to be got out of the freezer and defrosted and he is ready to go.
Jay got Dembe out and took him up to Woodbury Castle for a nice long walk to burn off some energy. It appears to be working as he is snoring his head off beside me.
Its been crazy here only just managed to squeeze all Dembe’s meals into the freezers. At least I wont have to cook for him for quite a while !
Today marks the first day of Jay’s holiday from work, he has the next 7 days off. For his first day off however he had to make himself scarce as I was holding my second meeting of The Stitchin’ Bitches, the craft group I founded. Dembe was beside himself, he simply adores all the attention he was getting from all the ladies.
One of my friends had made scones and brought clotted cream and jam. Dembe was being given bits of everyone’s scones on the sly. It is a wonder he could move after.
It was really sweet how he focused his attention onto Imogen, who had lost her own dog Bors, just a month earlier. I remember how Bors had comforted Jay and I after losing our dogs last year. It was beautiful to see Dembe giving all that love to Imogen.
For some reason when it is just Jay and I in the house Dembe has decided to be very naughty and just bark all the bloody time. It is driving us crazy.
Tuesday 25th February
Dembe was knackered after yesterday and was quite happy to snooze all day long. Jay and I needed to make a start on decorating his bedroom after planning that this would be our job during his holiday. Dembe however was not impressed that he wasn’t allowed to be in the same room as us 100% of the time whilst furniture etc was moved.
He is really barky again today and has now started howling when Jay leaves the house . He gets very upset when Jay ( not in uniform leaves him at home). When Jay is in and out of the house wearing his work uniform he is fine but oh my days it is the end of the world when his dad goes out to the shops and we are left. He really does love his whole pack being together silly monkey.
Today I cooked Dembe Mackerel and potato bake from the Lilys Kitchen cookbook. It was supposed to be sardines but I didnt have any tins of those. Bloody hell it stank the house out but he seemed to enjoy it!
Tonight we had dog training, on the whole it was a very good session but Dembe is still being a bugger with his barking. Martin gave us another technique to try with him when he starts barking. We are to ignore him and start talking to each other. If he continues to bark we are to leave the room. It worked at training with just the talking. The minute he realised we weren’t taking any notice he gave up – after about three barks. I will be very interested to see if this will work at home as the barking is becoming a real problem as it is all the time.
There were a few people absent from the training session this week so there were only 3 dogs which was nice as it meant each person had a larger area to work in. Tonight we were working on recall past temptations. Both boy dogs ( Dems included) were heavily distracted by a scent on the floor of the barn tonight. I have a sneaky suspicion that a female dog in another class maybe coming into season – could be a few weeks off yet but Frankie could always pick up on Willows seasons at least 5 weeks before they started. As a result Dembe disgraced himself by having a wee on the floor, it was a scent rather than a full bladder empty thank goodness but still embarrassing.
Dembe did really well on the recall past distractions and Martin pulled Jay aside during the session to tell him what an excellent trainer he was becoming and that it has been a joy watching not only the bond between him and Dembe grow but also Jays confidence as a trainer. Jay of course will never believe that for a second. But it is nice to have it confirmed by Martin.
Wednesday 26th February
Dembe was knackered after yesterdays training session. This week so far Dembe has been really good at not getting us up at the crack of dawn and waiting until 6.40am – which is a lie on these days!
He has been much better behaved today whilst we are continuing sorting out his daddys bedroom. Much less barking and he took himself off to my room and went to sleep.
For the first time in around 17 years we have managed to paint and not get anything on a dog! We are all knackered.
Dembe is really enjoying his home cooked meals again now we have added in another 3 dishes to his menu. He was getting fed up when we were down to just two different flavours.
Thursday 27th February
Dembe really hasn’t been happy about his dad going out and leaving both me and him at home. Weirdly when Jay is in his work uniform Dembe doesn’t react but in his civvies it is the end of the world for Dembe.
Another day of decorating, Dembe has been very good and has been obeying the leave and stay commands. Today whilst we were working he could lie on Jays bed and watch us. We removed the carpet, vinly and underlay from Jays room today. Dembe found that very strange indeed and had to sniff every inch of the exposed floorboards.
It has been quite sad for us in some ways decorating the bedroom. This was the room where Frankie and Willow were born, along with the rest of the first litter and the second litter. The Vinyl was laid for the puppies and the whelping box to make it easier for us to clean up after them. Jay gets very attached to these things and it has hurt his heart this week and made him very quiet. On a number of occasions I have had to explain to him that memories are held in our hearts and minds not objects. The house can’t be a shrine forever and it is time no matter how hard to move on now that we have had Dembe for over a year. It isn’t fair on him to live in the other dogs shadows.
Friday 28th February
Dembe spent the time laying in the hallway with his toes just inside the bedroom – the room he wasn’t allowed to come into! If he wasn’t there he was on my bed sleeping. He reminds me so much of our first dog Travis who was so good with things like that and was more than happy to spend the time sleeping on our bed.
He has been beautifully behaved for such a young pup ( he is 15 months) . He can be trusted not to be getting himself into trouble, even when it goes silent. The only other dog that we could trust like that was Travis. Mollie, Frankie and Willow were all destroyers. Silence meant sofas, kitchen units or Xbox ones were being destroyed.
I think all this rain is getting to Dembe now, after every walk he needs to be hosed off. He is now running onto the gravel and has to be coaxed back so he can be washed off. Yet if it was a muddy pool on the common he would be straight in there.
Saturday 29th February
Its a leap year and to celebrate Dembe woke us up by vomiting bile all over the hall carpet, my carpet and the stair carpet at 4.30am! Deep bloody joy! No idea what the issue is but he was given a zantac and that sorted out his tummy and he has kept everything down ever since. Although he was very suspicious of the cheese triangle that the zantac was hidden in so I fed it to him in small pieces.
At around 10am I noticed that Dembe had the tiniest little fleck of paint on his tail. So we haven’t got away with no paint on him but it is the smallest amount ever!
At around 10.30am the people arrived to collect Jays treadmill that we had sold to them. Another memory leaving the house this week. When Frankie was a pup I had him trained to use the treadmill on the command of jog jog. Again this has hit Jay hard and made him very sad. To be honest I will be the same when my room is done. There is a huge patch of stained carpet at the end of my bed. This was where Travis our first dog was really poorly when he was dying. I have never been able to replace the carpet despite the massive stain on it. Silly what things we hang onto and the importance they can hold.
We are having a day off from the decorating today. Dembe is making the most of it by snuggling up to each of us in turn. He was a right flirt when the young lads were here to collect the treadmill. One of the youngsters was very enamoured with him. Dembe was going a bit crazy jumping between the sofas and having a cuddle. At least now there will be load of room on Jays floor for Dembe’s wicker basket.
We are all feeling a little knackered from our 4.30am puking dog alarm call this morning.
As Jay was on an early today Dembe had a lead walk around the housing estate before his daddy went into work. Dembe then came back up and went back to sleep with me when Jay went off to work.
As usual Dembe knew his daddy was on his way home for lunch before I said anything. I walked into the lounge and found him on daddy watch again!
He did the same again in the evening as it is still light now when Jay finishes on an early shift, which feels like the first time in forever.
We had quite a lazy day today just pottering about and having lots of cuddles.
Tuesday 18th February
Really crazy busy day today by my standards, quite a normal day for anyone who doesn’t suffer with a chronic illness. Jay was day off and we had a long list of jobs to get through.
At 10am Dembe had his year health check and his vaccinations. The last time he had his vaccinations he was put up on the table, this time the lump was on the floor. Before he had his jabs the vet weighed him, he came in at 33.3kg which was a bit of a surprise as he certainly isn’t looking pudgy at the moment. The vet was really pleased with him, said she goes much more by body condition, Dembe has a clearly defined waist, you can feel his spine when you run your hand along his back and you can feel his ribs without seeing them. She said he may get heavier again but as long as that is muscle mass and not fat it is ok. We were chuffed to bits as basically we have been avoiding the vets for such a long time due to being made to feel like we had a horrendously obese dog. The vet asked me what I was feeding him as he was in such good condition.
Dembe managed to show us up in the vets by cocking his leg and scenting. I am guessing he wanted to show off that he is a big boy now and can do big boy wee’s!
With Dembe in the car we then headed into Exeter to the sewing machine shop as my machine was ready to be picked up after its service. As both Dembe and I were knackered we stayed in the car whilst Jay went and collected it. Dembe is definitely getting much better at being in the car and no longer makes such a fuss. We have worked out that many times the fuss was simply he needed to go to the toilet. So now any car journey longer than just going up to the common he has a quick walk around the block so that he is comfortable.
We were then home for a few hours before I had to head off to my Physiotherapy session. Whilst I was at that Jay took Dembe out for a nice walk on the common. He had a swim whilst he was there and played with a black Labrador called Reggie.
In the evening we had obedience training, Dembe had a really good session . One of the other owners came up to Jay before the session and asked him how much training time he was putting in with Dembe between lessons as he couldn’t get over how well Dembe was doing. That made us super proud parents!
Wednesday 19th February
As Jay is late night Dembe has had a really long walk on the common this morning. With all of us home he was really quite active this morning , bringing us toys and chucking crocodile around.
He also tried to get involved in my blog post for the other site I run The Myasthenia Kid. He is just letting me know he thinks cuddles are more important than that silly nonsense.
In the afternoon he took himself up to bed whilst I did some sewing. I needed to check that my machine was now running smoothly again after developing a fault. So far so good.
We were both shattered so were in bed and settled down for the evening by 18.30 which is unusual for the both of us. When Jay got in just after 10pm he took Dembe around the block for a walk to ensure he had been able to go to the toilet.
Thursday 20th February
I don’t remember much of today. I was terribly ill with a hemiplegic migraine the likes of which I have never suffered so severely from before. It is now Sunday and I am still struggling with the associated amnesia from the day before and the day after. I am going to see the doctor in a weeks time to get checked out as I was so very ill and to be honest the level of memory loss has frightened me. Jay had to take the day off work as I wasn’t safe to be at home alone or look after Dembe. I have vague memories of Dembe asleep on my feet at points during the day whilst I went between hurling my guts up and being semi conscious.
Jay however did manage to take this video of Dembe having a word with the recycling men
Friday 21st February
I am still struggling with amnesia after my migraine. Jay has left notes all over the place for me so I remember to do stuff. One of which being to feed Dembe. Dembe is sticking close by me and barking a lot at any noise he hears outside bless him.
Saturday 22nd February
Much the same as yesterday I am afraid. Dembe and I having a lot of cuddles. I did manage to get some sewing done. But that is pretty automatic for me. Other than that I do remember we played find it bunny for a bit. I confused Dembe as for the first time I hid bunny upstairs in Jays room. It took him an age to find bunny!
Sunday 23rd February
We have knocked Agility training on the head for the time being, so we have done a few bits of housework and played with Dembe. He loves having the whole pack together. Earlier when Jay nipped to the shop he started howling as Jay had left us. If Jay leaves us when he is wearing his uniform for work it is ok but he isn’t allowed to leave in his everyday clothes! Dembe was not happy!
He had a lovely long walk in the afternoon
I love the way he is trying to sleep with one eye open so he can continue to keep an eye on me!
Jay was on an early today so he took Dembe out at around 5am before he then had to shoot off into work. Today Dembe needed to be on his best behaviour as I was holding the inaugural session of The Stitchin’ Bitches – a small craft group I was hoping to set up to meet once a month and discuss our craft projects / get hints and tips from like minded others.
Dembe went a bit crazy when Gill the first person to arrive came in but by the time Sue and Sandra came he had calmed right down. He was a very good boy and was loving all the extra attention he was getting from our visitors. The meeting went well and Dembe was shattered after they left.
We had a very quiet rest of the day but I have to share this video with you, which we took this evening. Dembe goes absolutely crazy for cheese and will jump from one sofa to another – sometimes he covers a space of around 2 metres. Normally he does a spin midair but tonight he didn’t. But it is still quite impressive!
Tuesday 11th February
Jay was day off today so he took Dembe for a nice long walk up the common . We had to hose him off after his walk as he was covered in mud splashes. He went out again just before 10am as we were heading into Exeter and wanted to ensure that he didn’t need the toilet whilst we were out. I needed to drop my sewing machine off for a service and for a repair.
Dembe was beautifully behaved in the sewing machine shop. It has really horribly steep steps and he was a bit scared of them but with patience and gentle encouragement he managed them no problem at all. When he first got into the shop Jenna ( the lady who owns the shop) petted him. Dembe sat straight down and gave her his paw so he melted her heart immediately.
When we got back home Dembe had a very long sleep, he normally sleeps for most of the morning but with going out he hadn’t been able to do that. We took him out again just after 3pm for his afternoon walk. Again he had to be washed off on his return.
As dog training had been cancelled on Sunday we were having a double session this evening, one hour of agility with one hour of obedience after. Due to this we had our dinner early
Dembe decided to stick to sitting practically on top of me whilst I was eating!
Dembe enjoyed his agility training session. We have decided for the time being it will be his last agility session as he refuses to do half the obstacles and spends a lot of the time waiting around to use the ones he will do. This inevitably leads to him barking because he is bored. Also I can’t stand the idea of having to listen to this obnoxious poisonous woman sit and slag everyone else off in the room for an hour every Sunday. It is a shame but she really is the most vile individual I have had the misfortune to come across. She literally drains the life out of you. Good luck to anyone who is unlucky enough to be sat beside her in the next class. This isn’t a criticism of the dog trainers we use, we love them. It is just I can’t have another 5 weeks of dealing with this woman for the good of my own mental health.
Due to Dembe having agility before obedience he was a barky little sod throughout the whole of this lesson. As soon as he was stood still not doing anything he would bark. It was one of the worst sessions we had been at with him. It really crushes your confidence with him when he behaves like that and it only seems to be the training centre that he behaves likes this. I am sure he likes the echo that his bark makes in the barn.
Wednesday 12th February
Dembe and I had a really lazy day today as we were both shattered after the two hour training session. I was also in a bad way with my neck and back so needed a quiet day. We spent the day on the sofa.
As Jay was on a late night he took him out for a very long walk first thing. They met a female black Labrador on the walk and they played chase. Dembe came home so covered in mud that he actually looked like a black Lab so he had to be washed off out in the back garden again.
Sadly today there was news of a confirmed case of Alabama Rot in Budleigh Salterton which is just down the road from us. There is a high chance that this dog was walked on Woodbury Common like Dembe is. So it is very worrying indeed as the fatality rate for Alabama Rot is 90%. The only guidelines are to avoid walking in woods and to wash off your dog after each walk. They are no closer to working out what it is that is causing this awful disease and why some dogs contract it and others dont.
When Jay got home just after 10pm he took Dembe for a walk around the block so that he went to the toilet before bed time.
Thursday 13th February
I got woken up at around 3am by Dembe coming in to check on me as the storm was raging outside. It sounded like stones were being thrown against my window – it was huge bits of hail and then out of nowhere we had Thunder and Lightning. Thankfully Dembe just snuggled down beside me and slept. I am so relieved that the wind and the storms don’t seem to bother him.
Jay took Dembe out for another long walk this morning as unfortunately this week he has two late nights on the bounce. Dembe was pickled again so he had to be hosed down outside to ensure all the mud was off him. Especially after hearing yesterdays news. I am also checking him daily to ensure he has no lesions on him.
Dembe was a happy boy as his Cows ears were delivered this afternoon and the ones that have come this time are bloody huge.
Unfortunately Dembe has started getting a bit funny with his food again. He is eating but he is starting to walk away from meals and not seem that bothered about them. So before Jay went to work we went into the kitchen and cooked up three huge instapots full of different meals for Dembe. We have cooked so much that we have had to bring in the small freezer from outside for extra storage. We have put it in my room as that is the only place we have the space for it that is near a socket. So now he has two kinds of Lamb stew and I made him another batch of Scooys stew as that is definitely a favourite. Since changing him over to home cooked meals I have always tried to ensure he doesn’t eat the same meal twice in a day but clearly he is a dog that needs more variety. So fingers crossed this helps him. He is looking really good and much trimmer since switching to home cooking. I was going to cook him another meal but I have run out of containers for him.
Friday 14th February
Happy Valentines day. Dembe ensured he got a card for his dad! It is also mine and Jays 23rd anniversary of being a couple.
I haven’t been up to much the last few days as I have been so out of it due to some medication I am taking due to my back being in spasm. Thankfully Dembe has worked out that something is wrong and has dropped his energy levels accordingly.
He is loving the cows ears, so much so he was desperate to show me the tiny piece he had in his mouth on Friday.
He makes me laugh so much when you talk to him as he tilts his head and raises his eyebrows as you can see above!
On Friday afternoon I decided to lay the blanket out that I am working on to see how big it is. Dembe decided that it definitely needed lab tested.
Saturday 15th February
We had some visitors today as Sam is home from college on his half term. Dembe amazes me, Sam is profoundly disabled and Dembe is so gentle and so in tune that he needs to help Sam. It is so amazing to witness. Dembe was playing. The only person he would give his toy to was Sam, same with the cows ear he was chewing, only Sam was presented with it.
Also Dembe climbed up onto the sofa and very gently kissed Sam, where as with Sams mum Sarah he just charged her and pinned her down waiting for a cuddle. I am in awe of my little boy and his ability to discern the differences between a completely different species. It does make you wonder who is the most intelligent human or animal.
When Dembe realised that Sam was getting ready to leave he staged a bit of a sit in and sat on Sams lap.
Dembe is just so gentle even when he is giving Sam a kiss. He always gives Sam’s glasses a clean and licks Sams hearing aids. But normally when Dembe kisses you he drowns you – he is a wet kisser. Not when he kisses Sam. It is just a sight to behold. I don’t think anyone would believe it unless they actually saw it happen.
Dembe was exhausted after our visitors.
Sunday 16th December
Whilst Storm Dennis ( yes another storm this weekend after Storm Ciara last weekend) rages outside it is a very quiet day in the Morris household. Jamie is full of cold and feeling dreadful. He went back to bed at 11am. I am sat downstairs on my tod whilst Dembe is cuddled up to his dad upstairs.
Dembe has had a nice long walk this morning ……finishing with him being hosed down in the back garden. We have also made the last dish for Dembe’s a la carte menu which is just called rice and meat – beef mince, rice, carrot and spinach. Now just waiting for it all to cool so it can go in the freezer.
This morning Dembe had his one pot wonder for the first time in days and wolfed it down so the variety thing is definitely getting him interested in his food again.
We are on half term now for dog training so we wont be back until a week Tuesday.
Today has been a very lazy day. Jay was on an early so he took Dembe out up the common before going to work.
We had lots of cuddles on the sofa and we played find it, with find it bunny.
I caught him looking out the window waiting for his dad to get home at lunch time. As soon as he hears my message ping on my phone to let me know that Jay is on his way home he will get up on the sofa and stand guard. Some days he is up there before I get a message.
As soon as he see’s his dad reverse onto the drive he will either go to the door or he will run to his toy box and get a toy to greet his dad with. The retriever part is strong in him, he loves to walk around with a toy in his mouth. At the moment he likes carrying around his pheasant toy. This changes from day to day which toy he is favouring.
He was full of beans this evening before Jay got in. He waits by the door lying on the sofa arm.
When Jay gets home from work he doesn’t get a toy brought to him as Dembe knows he will be going out for a walk!
Tuesday 4th February
Jay is day off today.
Dembe is really barky and a bit crazy today so I am dreading dog training this evening as if he is barking and naughty at home it usually continues in class the little sod.
Dembe did really well did exceptionally well at obedience class this evening . He got got picked out of the group to show off his recall skills. Martin the trainer took Dembe down the other end of the barn and got Jay to call Dembe back when Dembe wasn’t expecting it. He went off down the barn like a rocket. I don’t think I have ever seen him move so quickly. They then repeated it doing a front present. Dembe veered off course and came over to me so I ignored him, Jay called him again and he shot off back to Jay. He did the front present beautifully.
Wednesday 5th February
Dembe started at 6am to try and get me up but I managed to keep him occupied until 6.50am. Jay got him out at by 7.30am. Jay said he was going crazy on the walk running around like a loon.
Dembe slept quite a bit during the day as he was knackered from his walk and dog training last night. He sprang into action at 5am demanding his toys to be thrown for him.
Thankfully I kept him entertained and managed to wear him out. He did settle down quickly when we went up to bed . Jay took him out around the block when he got in from work and Dembe did lots of big boy wee’s. So proud of him.
Thursday 6th February
Dembe is eating loads at the moment and I am not surprised as it is supposed to be turning colder in the next few days.
We had a slow start to the morning as I had woken up with a migraine and was feeling quite out of it for a while. Dembe was quite happy to lie beside me on the sofa sleeping bless him.
I find it quite crazy when I compare his photos from last year to the ones I have here as he was tiny this time last year and now he looks so grown up. But he will always be our baby,
At 5.30pm I had a doctors appointment so Jay dropped me there and then he and Dembe headed to the beach walking through the town to get there. It was a really good training session for him, by the time he worked out he was going to the beach he was beside himself with excitement. He was desperate to get onto the sand and as Jay took him down the steps he took his lead off. Dembe jumped the last 5 steps straight onto the beach. Not as good as our previous Weimaraner Mollie who Jay let off who then jumped the sea wall dropping at least 8 foot onto the sand below. Thankfully without injury.
Dembe had a whale of a time running around, doing zoomies. He was playing with the other dogs on the beach and he had a swim in the sea. As it was dark he was noticing the waves coming up behind him and got a drenching. He ran himself ragged.
Later that evening I collapsed in severe pain, I was by myself as Dembe was in with Jay. I stumbled towards the bathroom and sat there for a bit wondering if the pain was going to ease up at all. As I made my way back to bed I fell. Dembe came out of the bedroom saw me on the floor and ran straight into Jays room and woke him up by nibbling his hand. I was in so much pain I was unable to speak. Jay helped me get back to bed and Dembe was glued to my side. eventually the pain died down and I managed to get to sleep around midnight. It was only then that Dembe went back in with his dad.
Friday 7th February
Dembe is stuck to me like glue today after me having a migraine and then my bowel adhesion’s playing up last night. We didn’t really do much today as I was feeling so rank. Jay took Dembe out before work so he had a good run and he was mroe than happy just to curl up with me on the sofa.
At 7pm Dembe took himself up to bed which is practically unheard of. I knew he was knackered from being on duty looking after me.
Saturday 8th February
Today is my parents wedding anniversary! Happy anniversary.
This photo of Dembe totally sums how I am feeling today, utterly drained. There is a huge storm tomorrow “Storm Ciara” so I am trying to get all the jobs done that I would do on a Saturday and Sunday with help into one day and it is exhausting when my batteries are already drained!
Dembe came to life later that evening! He was having a mad hour or so after his dinner whilst waiting for Jay to get home.
Sunday 9th February
My god it is windy. We woke up at 6am to find one of the fence panels flapping in the wind. It is only a yellow warning currently and that increases to an amber warning at 8am. We managed to get outside at around 7.30am to fix the fence panel. The wind was so strong I nearly got blown off my feet and I am no shrinking violet. Dembe isn’t keen on the wind and keeps barking at it.
So far so good we still have power but the next postcode are over from us has lost power. I have candles and a gas stove should that happen here. I am racing to get Dembe’s blog completed and set up ready to publish in case of loss of power.
Dog Agility training got cancelled at around 10.30am due to the weather.
The amber warning will be in place until 9pm this evening so I am signing off early. Stay safe.
Dembe is shattered after the fun of agility training yesterday. Jay took Dembe out early, he is much happier about going out in the dark these days. Unlike when he was a pup and he would refuse to get out of the back of the car.
We had a lazy day together snuggled on the sofa. He was very pleased when Jay popped home for lunch . He brought a selection of toys into the kitchen for Jay to attempt to get off him. He likes greeting Jay with a toy in his mouth. If Jay comes in and he doesn’t have a toy, Dembe will run off and get one to show to his daddy. It is so very sweet.
He had a good walk when Jay finished work.
Tuesday 21st January
Jay is day off today and took Dembe for a quick walk up the common, quite early. He will be having a longer walk this afternoon whilst I am at Physiotherapy.
Jay went to Old Common whilst I was in my physio session. Dembe met lots of dogs and had several games of chase. He still isn’t keen on leaving me anywhere, he can get quite stressed out. By the time I got out of physio he was shattered.
I took this photo about 10 minutes after we got in. He was so shattered but he was determined to attempt to keep an eye on me.
We had dog training this evening – it was bloody freezing! I had so many layers on I could barely walk. Tights on under my jeans and 4 layers on my top half. Dembe had an excellent training session, he was the best in the class this evening even if I do say it myself. Unfortunately Max the GSD seems to have taken a dislike to Dembe and was growling at him. He decided last Sunday that Dembe was in his crosshairs and he seems to have continued this week. Thankfully there is plenty of space between them so Max can grumble all he likes.
Wednesday 23rd Janaury
We had a quiet day as Dembe and I were both pretty shattered after the dog training session last night ( plus I also had physio ) . He slept the majority of the day. He only came to life when Jay came home for lunch and again when he finished work.
Dembe started throwing his toys around the front room at about 5pm and kept that up until Jay arrived home just after 6pm.
He is eating really well at the moment and seems to be really enjoying his food.
Thursday 23rd January
I woke up with a migraine at 2.30am, so I got my soft collar on and dosed myself up with pain meds. Dembe was in with Jay so it didn’t wake him. I have to sleep sitting up when wearing the collar so I was propped up in bed when Dembe came in at 5.30am and started barking because he didn’t know who it was in the bed! Idiot. I calmed him down , he then jumped on the bed and covered me in kisses. I could feel that all his back hair was up. He settled down beside me and I stayed in bed for as long as I could. We managed to sleep until 8am which is unheard of. Jay took Dembe out at 6.30am but I slept through that.
We had a very low key day due to me struggling with the migraine all day.
Friday 24th January
I had a funny turn today where I came over like I was going to faint ( it happens quite a lot but usually I can just sit there and be ok) . My eyes started rolling in my head so I had to slip down off the sofa, get on the floor and raise my legs up. As I got down on the floor I was fully expecting Dembe to go mental as me lying on the floor is normally the signal for a mummy pile on and play time.
I was so shocked when Dembe quietly got off the sofa and curled right up beside me, resting his face against my face. Normally I would have been trodden on and toys dropped on my head. It was really out of character for him. When he wasn’t lying face to face with me, he was lying on my arm so I couldn’t get up. We stayed on the floor for 30 minutes before he moved and brought me a tennis ball. How did he know that was just what I needed? I sat on the floor for a bit ensuring I was ok to get up and then we both headed upstairs and lay down on my bed for a few hours.
As you can see from the photo’s I took at the time he was stuck to me like glue. He hasn’t been trained to do this, he picked up that something was wrong and then stayed on the floor with me until I was well enough to move. I am so very proud of my little pudding. He is my hero.
Saturday 25th January
I am feeling a lot better today thank goodness, as Jay is late night so I will be on my own from just after 12pm until 10pm. Jay took Dembe out for a nice long walk to ensure he didn’t go too mental later with not having a second walk.
As expected Dembe got all his toys out of his box on Saturday evening
Crocodile was being thrown around the lounge along with tennis balls as he attempted to entertain himself. In the end I gave him a bulls tail chew to occupy him and bring the energy levels down. That worked and around an hour later we toddled up to bed where he settled down beside me immediately.
Sunday 26th January
Dembe is full of beans this morning, despite having a lovely long walk with Jay first thing. I had to take my slippers off which is a rare occurrence as my feet were too hot. Dembe deciding that we weren’t paying him enough attention then stole them and sat chewing the labels out of them. He also seemed to spend a very long time just bathing in the smell of my feet, strange animal.
We had lesson 4 of Dembe’s agility training course today. He mastered the weave poles and the long jumps. He was the first dog to manage 4 jumps today.
Dembe has been asleep ever since we have been back.
I forgot to share, Dembe now knows that we don’t react to his barking and we have been teaching him the command speak and then cease – it’s been a bit hit and miss. So now as barking no longer works he has started howling. Little bugger.
Jay is on an uber early this morning but this means he will be home shortly after 2pm . Dembe hasn’t had a walk this morning due to this. He will have a long walk once Jay finishes work.
At Jays normal lunch time Dembe started waiting by the window ready for his daddys return. He couldn’t work out why he was late and stayed there for ages. Luckily he didn’t really have long to wait.
As Dembe is such a messy eater in the morning I quickly made him a washable and wipe clean quilted mat that was personalised with his name on. I bought the fabric before Christmas and then realised it wasn’t going to be any good for what I wanted it for so it has lain in my stash since then.
He is really enjoying the food I have started making him. Yesterday I made him Scoobys Stew, you can get the recipe here – http://happyandyummy.com/scoobys-stew-dogs/ . He really loves it and has been licking his bowl clean and eating in a way we have never seen him do before.
He is looking so grown up these days. I managed to get this lovely shot of him this evening
Tuesday 14th January
Jay is on another early but this is a normal one hank goodness. Dembe got a walk up the common before Jay left for work, the weather is absolutely terrible. He is still eating really well, he dances around as I get the Scooby Stew ready for him to eat. I can’t help myself every time I put his mat down I have to say to him “table for one sir” – sad I know.
He is looking really red at the moment. He seems to have got a lot darker during the winter months which we thought may happen. I expect he will get very blonde again in the summer.
Tonight we have dog training and I know it isn’t going to be Dembes night as he has been playing up all day. With Jay working he hasn’t had his usual 3 walks before we go ( 2 long and one short) so he is full of beans and up for mischief. My prediction was right as he spent the lesson gobbing off barking at everyone and everything. He did behave better after 20 minutes in and was doing really well. It is just embaressing to have the one dog in class that barks. He barks with excitement, he barks because he is bored, he barks because he is frustrated, he barks just because! And now at home he is adding in the odd howl at dogs on the TV . He is a little bugger.
He did have everyone in stitches this evening when during a break he decided to jump on my lap for a cuddle. He loves being on my lap at home on the sofa but on a plastic chair its not as comfortable for me LOL!
Jay bought a load of ingredients for making his food tonight when he finished work. So I shall be knocking those up this week.
Wednesday 15th January 2020
I cooked up a storm today in the kitchen making Dembe the Wonderful One pot and Meat loaf recipes from the book by the lady who started the dog food company Lily’s Kitchen. I made the porridge last night for Dembe and he had that first thing. I dont think he is too sure about it even though he has eaten it. I will be watching this week for a refusal which I do think will come.
He was very interested when I was making the meatloaf and was dancing around the kitchen when the chicken livers came out and were processed. Its a good job I am making it for him as I nearly hurled. I would never touch this stuff if it was for Jamie.
We were both shattered after our time in the kitchen and we spent the rest of the day putting our feet up and watching the telly.
The bowl was licked clean after his wonderful one pot for dinner!
Thursday 16th January
Dembe is 14 months old today. It has gone by so quickly, he is turning into such a lovely boy although like all kids he has his moments!
Jay was late night so he took him out for a nice long walk on the common. They bumped into lots of dogs so Dembe had a really lovely time chasing and playing around with everyone. He didn’t sleep all morning so I knew I was going to be in for a quiet afternoon.
Dembe kept me company whilst I was sewing by lying on the kitchen floor. Something he hasn’t done since he was a tiny pup. Normally he lies on the big sofa in the lounge and watches me from there whilst trying not to doze off.
We had high winds on today so I did wonder if all the noises outside were bothering him and that’s why he wanted to be so close to me. Due to the trapped nerve in my neck I only managed to sew for a short time before I had to stop. So I retreated into the lounge and sat with a hot water bottle on my shoulder whilst doing some crochet. I wanted to see how large the square was that I was making ( it needed to be 1 metre square) so I laid it out on the floor. Within seconds this happened
Every time I lay my work down he lies on top of it.
He was very good this evening settling down upstairs with me, although he kept an ear out for his dads return and as soon as he heard him on the drive he barked and ran downstairs to greet him.
Friday 17th January
Jay was on a 9-6 today so Jay got him out before he want to work. He made sure he gave him a long walk as my hair dresser was coming over today to sort my hair out for me. So we needed him to have lower energy levels. He was very well behaved, mainly due to the fact he was given a bulls tail to chew on and some lamb tripe. When he had finished those he kept coming in with different toys to see if he could entice us into playing with him! He did on a couple of occasions attempt to get on my lap.
Jay brought home a friend from work at lunchtime so Dembe was really pleased as this was someone else to adore him! He did all the tricks that Jay got him to do. Although he was a bit too keen to try Rachael’s lunch that she had brought with her.
By the time everyone had left both me and the boy were exhausted so we spent the afternoon lounging on the sofa.
Saturday 18th January
As expected we had our first meal refusal today, it was the savoury porridge and I had my suspicions that he wasn’t 100% sold on this recipe. As soon as it became clear that he wan’t going to eat this we emptied his bowl, got him a new bowl and gave him stuff that we knew he would eat, the wonderful one pot recipe. He ate that with zero complaints.
Jay has the weekend off after working 5 straight days so Dembe is very happy having both of us home.
We have been playing lots of games today and working on leave for both his agility training class and his obedience training.
Dembe is always happiest when his pack is all together.
Sunday 19th January
Dembe had a nice long walk on the common this morning. It was very cold out minus 2, which thankfully meant he wasn’t very dirty after his walk. Today we have agility training for non- beginners, which starts at 13.40. We have had a lazy morning catching up on some Tv programmes whilst Dembe has had cuddles and slept.
Dembe and Jay had a really good session and he is really now starting to get the hang of the weave poles. He did well on the wobble board and went on that no problem at all so we will try and build that up so that we can get his confidence up so that he can get on the seesaw which he still avoids.
Dembe came home and crashed, fast asleep curled up beside his daddy.
