Happy Birthday Dembe! 2 years old today. How on earth are you two? It only seems like yesterday we were bringing you home in the car.
Daddy was on an early as usual, so we had to wait to give Dembe his presents until Jay popped home for his lunch. Dembe was getting very fed up with me singing Happy Birthday to him.
When Daddy came home Dembe got to open his presents. We had bought him a new lead, a new glow in the dark collar, a Kong squeaky ring ( we call it the doughnut) and a Kong American Football.
Sam’s mum Sarah dropped by in the afternoon with a present and card for Dembe. They got him a new bunny toy and 2 tins of sardines which is Dembe’s favourite.
Dembe had lots of birthday cuddles with me, he has been on my lap a lot this week.
Jay made Dembe’s birthday tea which was corned beef, cheese triangles, sardines and kibble.
Tuesday 17th November
Jay was day off today, so Dembe spent much of the day sprawled over him.
Jay shot a quick video of Dembe wearing his glow in the dark collar on his walk this morning
Dembe spent the whole day switching between the sofas having cuddles with both of us.
Wednesday 18th November
Jay was on a late night today so Dembe had two good walks before he went into work today. We were watching ITV’s This Morning when they played a video that was for dogs and invited viewers to record what their dogs did whilst the video was on. To be honest Dembe has more of a reaction when nature programmes are on.
Whilst I did a bit of sewing this afternoon in the kitchen, Dembe slept in the doorway of the kitchen / lounge so he could keep an eye on me.
Martin from Happy Dogs came and picked Dembe up just after 2pm. When Dembe arrived home just before 4pm he looked like a chocolate lab. Martin had already given him a quick hose down with the mud daddy he keeps in his van but Dembe was still pickled. I tried to hose him off outside but it just wasn’t coming off. So he had to go into the shower and have a proper shampoo off. Dembe was not a happy bunny that he had to go in the shower
As he was soaking wet he had to spend a couple of hours in his drying coat.
He was full of beans this evening and was getting so many different toys out. He was into getting his chews out. He was having a good go on his antler.
Thursday 19th November
Dembe woke me up at 3am by licking my face, I was a little annoyed and confused to begin with until I realised that I was starting with a migraine and he had woken me up so I could take my meds. When you have a migraine you have a big drop in blood sugar. Clearly Dembe could smell the change in my body odour and woke me up. Once I had taken my medications and went back to sleep, Dembe settled on the left side of my face and slept like that until I got up a few hours later.
Dembe stuck to me like glue for the rest of the day.
He has been obsessed with being on my lap when I am sat on the sofa or if I am having a lie down on the sofa he lies on me.
Friday 20th November
I haven’t been very well the last few days, Dembe has been my little ray of sunshine. I am so grateful that I have him.
I spent a lot of the afternoon lying on the sofa, Dembe came on the sofa and lied on me.
Saturday 21st November
Was pretty much the same as Friday, a lot of time spent lying on the sofa
It is Dembe’s dad’s birthday today. For part of Jays birthday I got him this personalised print
If you can’t read the writing underneath it says wet kisser, body wagger, toy bringer. Jay was thrilled with it. For those of you in the UK it was purchased from Not on the high street and the frame came from Amazon.
We had a visit from Leanne, Liam and Imogen today. Liam was full of beans and Dembe and him played together for several hours. It is brilliant how well Liam and Dembe get on.
By the evening Dembe was shattered as we both were.
We had some fireworks go off this evening but Dembe wasn’t bothered by them at all.
Tuesday 3rd November
We were supposed to be starting obedience training again this evening but alas due to Covid the course has been postponed whilst lock down is on.
Dembe got a bit muddy on his afternoon walk so he had a wash off outside and was put in his drying coat for a bit. He really likes his drying coat and it is so much easier to deal with than trying to dry a wet dog who thinks this is a crazy game!
This evening ( as there is most evenings) there was some crazy daddy and Dembe play time! They had lots of fun on the floor being silly.
Dembe again was really good with the fireworks going off and was very happy to have an early night with me.
Wednesday 4th November
Dembe’s dad went down to Plymouth this morning to see his family before the lock down resumes on Thursday. Dembe was not a happy bunny that his dad had left in his civvies without him. He sulked all morning. He kept going half way up the stairs and sitting looking through the banisters.
He was very happy when his dad got home!
Thursday 5th November
Back to lock down yet again. Apparently it is 4 weeks only. It means getting parked up on Woodbury common is going to be a bloody nightmare again as people that never go there at any other time decide to go for a walk. I am hoping it rains a lot as they don’t seem to want to walk then.
Friday 6th November
We have had a really lazy week and with Jay being on holiday I have been really slack at doing Dembe’s diary this week.
I have been really impressed with how well Dembe has coped with all the fireworks that have been going off as soon as it gets dark each night. He has a few barks at them, as soon as we make a fuss with him and play a few games he just then ignores them. There is no fear which is fantastic after living for 15 years with dogs that were terrified of fireworks through no fault of their own. It makes the dark evenings so less stressful. Poor Frankie would start getting stressed as soon as the dark evenings started even if there were no fireworks. Mollie would hide in the bathrooms shower cubicle and stay there all night. Willow’s teeth would chatter. They wouldn’t eat or drink. Weirdly if they were outside the house on a walk the noise wouldn’t bother them but if they were at home they were terrified. I always worried that one of them would have a heart attack through the fear. I loathe fireworks due to this. People that have never experienced a stressed animal due to fireworks are dreadfully unsympathetic.
Saturday 7th November
Jay has been surprised all week by how much Dembe has been glued to my side every morning until I am up and dressed. We have our own little routine and he will stay with me until it is time to go downstairs. Plus I haven’t been that well all week with crippling headaches coming from my neck due to the muscles being in spasm.
He wasn’t very happy when I photographed my crochet today. Normally he will dive on top of it.
We were laughing our heads off seeing Dembe like this today. We thought he maybe stuck as he was making no effort to move. We picked his green ball up ( his favourite toy) and he moved straight away. He will contort himself into the weirdest postions.
Sunday 8th November
The last day of Jays holiday and my dad’s 70th birthday. Due to lock down we can’t see my dad which is a shame but we have spoken to him today.
We are all having a lazy day catching up on a few jobs. Dembe is enjoying lots of cuddles.
I am completing the blog post early this week as it is my birthday on Sunday!
Monday 26th October
It is Monday so Jays shift must be an early one because that is the LAW! I got up just after 7am and Dembe was fast asleep on the small sofa with his head facing the front door as if waiting for his dad to get home.
Dembe spent much of the morning sleeping whilst I did some embroidery in the kitchen.
He was very excited when his dad came home at lunch time. He has been bringing his dad his carrot over the last few days when he gets home. Dembe loves his walk around the block at lunch time as he gets to meet some of his doggy friends and adoring humans.
If I thought Dembe was excited at lunch time he was mental at 4pm when Jay got home. Jumping from sofa to sofa and doing spins in mid air.
After his walk he was much more sedate. playing with his Ducky.
Tuesday 27th October
Jay is day off today all day rather than just half a day like he was last week. We don’t have Obedience training this evening which is weird. We are back on 3rd November.
I had a doctors appointment this morning, so we took Dembe down the town with us so that he could have some environmentalisation training, with loud noises, more people etc. He coped really well. He got lots of attention as he always does, a few pats and cuddles from people and lots of lovely compliments on how well behaved he was etc.
When I got out of the doctors you would have thought I had been gone for years as he was so pleased to see me.
In the evening Dembe and Jay had a massive play time. Dembe loves it when Jay lies on the floor, he is very gentle and never stomps all over him. He will groom Jay and nibble his ears and nose. They play tug with whichever toy that Dembe wants to play with. This evening it was the grey dinosaur.
Wednesday 28th October
Jay was on the late shift today at work so Dembe was very happy to have us both home for the morning. I wasn’t very well first thing so I ended up going back to bed. Dembe came back up to bed with me and lay his head on my chest to comfort me. He is so very gentle. We stayed like that for about an hour whilst I dozed.
When I was downstairs Dembe was very keen to keep an eye on me. He does like to sleep either next to me on the sofa or on the opposite sofa in a position where he can see if I move or on the floor by my feet.
Dembe was picked up by Martin for his walk up on the common. Today he had the company of a little dog called Leo. They know each other from Obedience training so it was nice for Dembe. They managed to avoid the rain but he got very muddy so he needed a wash off. I am so pleased we got him the Ruff and Tumble drying coat as it makes drying him so much easier. He is such a good boy for me and makes it easy for me to get the coat on him.
Dembe had me in stitches this evening as he was so desperate to sleep near my feet he ended up sleeping with his head on the coffee table shelf. That was a first.
Thankfully Dembe did a poo on his walk so Jay didn’t have to come home to take him around the block. Dembe was starving when he got home from his walk. To lessen the risk of bloat I left his dinner for around 90 minutes before feeding him. He polished it all off.
We then had our usual PDP as Jay and I call it, his post dinner play! He was going mental chucking his toys around. We have this every evening for around an hour and then Dembe settles down for the night.
Thursday 29th October
Dembe woke up at around 5.30am. Jay took him out for a walk at around 5.45 and as soon as they came back Dembe ran straight upstairs to check on me. He settled straight back down and went to sleep. He is so good in that respect he knows that is the routine.
Dembe is being a right barky bob this week as across the road there are builders working. They are in and out of the house opposite and walking up and down the drive. So obviously Dembe has to bark at them to let them know that he lives here and it is his street. I don’t know if because I haven’t been having a great week health wise that it has made him hyper vigilant but I am getting a bit cross with the constant barking. Why do I have to own the noisiest Labrador?
He isn’t very happy with me this morning as I have run out of his favourite Denta stix. Now I know these are utter sticks of crap but he has had them since he was a puppy and he loves them. The rest of the time his diet is top notch, so I am cutting myself some slack. Anyway I have a very put out pup, who keeps sitting in front of the Denta stix cupboard casually dropping the hint that yet again I am a shit parent. Cheers for that Dems.
Dembe has been watching me like a hawk all week as I haven’t been feeling all that well. I have worked out it is one of my medications, the dosage is too high for me and is leaving me feeling drunk and disorientated. Poor Dembe has been working overtime watching out for me and keeping me safe.
Just a silly boomerang video of Dembe from Thursday evening
Friday 30th October
Jay was on a late shift again this week so Dembe thoroughly enjoyed having his pack all with him again.
Martin picked him up and took him out for another walk on the common with his mate Leo. If you are on Facebook you can find the videos here https://www.facebook.com/pg/happydogs.uk/videos/?ref=page_internal They are fantastic video’s and you can see that Dembe is having a wonderful time on his walks. We have been brave and said that Dembe can be off the lead, so he spends a lot of the walk off the lead now. He has had quite a bit of training on the walks as he has had to walk past Cows, Ponies, other dogs and groups of Royal Marines doing training up there. He has handled it all brilliantly.
He got home absolutely pickled in mud, so he had to have a quick clean off outside and then into his drying coat. Martin had given him a quick hose off before popping him in the van but Dems always manages to produce more mud from god knows where. He was a very good boy for me again helping me getting his drying coat on him.
We had a relaxing evening after a bit of a stressful afternoon.
We had an earlyish night and Dembe settled down really well for me.
Saturday 31st October
Today Dembe and I have been getting little jobs done around the house ready for the start of the birthdays, first mine and then Jays. Dembe is very excited as he knows that there will be naughty treats to be had.
As soon as his dad left for work this morning, despite the fact I was up, Dembe went back up to bed ….his dad’s bed
I only say him when he came downstairs demanding his frozen kong. He didn’t want his breakfast until gone 10.30am today. He is a fickle little sod sometimes.
I was taking a photo of hims when my friend Leanne pulled up outside
Leanne delivered our present of a Chocolate buttons Cheesecake! It is huge. Dembe thought the concept of a cake made of cheese was an excellent idea but he wasn’t very happy when he realised due to the chocolate he couldn’t have it.
His dad came home for lunch and whilst he was here some birthday cards were posted through the door. I opened the door to say thank you and it was my friend Gill with her black Labrador Dexter. So we let the boys greet each other, Dexter wandered straight into the house and promptly helped himself to one of Dembe’s ( many) cow’s ears! It was hilarious. Dembe and Dexter are both so good that there is no need to panic. Dembe was far to busy getting fuss from Gill to care about the fact one of his cows ears had been stolen. So that was really nice as I hadn’t seen Gill for a little while due to the Covid situation.
Well surprise, surprise Jay is on an early shift today. When I woke up Dembe wasn’t on the bed with me. I found him curled up on his dad’s bed snuggled into his dressing gown. We had a lovely cuddle before we went downstairs.
Dembe decided to join me in the shower this morning for the first time in ages.
He got drenched!
His personalised mat arrived today, he seemed totally nonplussed and was much more interested in the packaging it came in.
Dembe is still sleeping right beside me on the bed at night. He wedges himself against my left leg in exactly the same position his uncle Frankie did.
Tuesday 20th October
Well Dembe and I were all confused today as Jay was working this morning ( he had the afternoon off ). He had a meeting at another store, so it was just me and Dembe this morning.
We are finding since we switched to only feeding Dembe when he is actively showing us he is hungry has stopped meal times becoming a battle ground. He lets us know he is hungry by sitting in front of the fridge, if you give him a cocktail sausage he isn’t interested in it. That is when you know he wants his breakfast or dinner. If you feed him at any other time he will either a) walk away from eat not eating anything or b) eat a few mouthfuls and drop most of it on the floor. This way the bowl is spotlessly clean! It is also much less stressful.
He is an incredibly cuddly boy today, he is wanting me to hold his cows ear whilst he chews it.
We had the last training session this evening for this block of 6. We start again back on 3rd November.
For the first 20 minutes of the lesson Dembe was messing around, easily distracted and refusing to do a stay. He can do a stay standing on his head so why he decided tonight he wouldn’t I have no idea. Then all of a sudden he just switched on and was an absolute angel.
This was the first time the whole group had ever done this exercise and they all did brilliantly.
Wednesday 21st October
OMG Dembe slept until 7.20am , absolutely unheard of. Jay and I had to check the time as we couldn’t believe the lie on that we got.
The weather is absolutely horrendous, torrential rain. So Dembe’s Ruff & Tumble drying coat got it’s first outing.
We purchased the coat a few weeks ago and have been waiting for the time when the weather was bad that he would need to wear it to dry off. All I can say is WOW it made it much quicker for him to dry off, he liked wearing it and no wet dog draped over my lap when he decided that he wanted up on my lap which is a frequent occurrence even at 35kg.
He look so cute in it.
Jay is a late night shift today, as Dembe has refused to poo on the last few walks I decided that I would start playing with him at 2pm to ensure he would want to go whilst he was out. He was fast asleep.
To get him immediately engaged we played find it but instead of playing using one of his toys I played using dog treats. He was very keen to play that game. He is getting so good at finding the treats. I have been putting them in harder and harder places and he really engages with his nose now and searches properly. One of my favourite places to hide treats is under cushions or pillows. He looks like a proper search dog the way he lifts the cushions up with his nose and gets the treat.
He got a bit muddy on his walk, Martin ( our dog walker ) managed to get the worst off before Dembe came home. So it was time for the ruff and tumble dog coat again.
Dembe was shattered and settled down really quickly this evening.
Thursday 22nd October
I wasn’t very good with neck and back pain so we had a quiet day today. Jay worked a few hours in the morning and then had the rest of the day off.
We got our car back from the garage today, Dembe loves the new car and always lies down in the back of it.
Friday 23rd October
Jay is on a 12-9 shift so Dembe went out twice this morning before Jay went to work. It was Martin’s birthday today so Dembe went out early this afternoon and had the company of a dog called Taxi.
They look deep in conversation on their walk. Dembe didn’t poo, mainly because he was asleep when Martin arrived and I hadn’t got him up in time and playing games.
Jay had to pop home just after 5pm to whizz Dembe around the block. Dembe had a huge poo so just as well his dad popped home for him.
We had a lazy afternoon with lots of cuddles
Dembe was shattered so I managed to get up to bed well before 7pm and have a much needed early night.
Saturday 24th October
Dembe was a very cuddly boy today and wanted to be wherever I was.
The crochet inspector is back!
Dembe was a happy bunny today as his dad was on an early shift so was home just after 4pm.
Sunday 25th October
The clocks went back last night but unfortunately Dembe’s didn’t, we were woken up just after 4am by a little someone crying to go out. After he had been out with Jay he was happy to settle down and go back to sleep. Not waking us up again until gone 9am as he wanted his breakfast.
Leanne and Liam popped in to see us today. Dembe adores Liam and they played together. Dembe getting jealous when Liam was on my lap having a cuddle. They had come over as Liam’s school bag was broken and his mum wanted to know if I would be able to fix it – which of course I can. I had a lovely bunch of roses from them.
As usual, even I get bored of this sentence, Jay was on an early shift today. Dembe stayed downstairs which he does occasionally. When I came down I found him on the small sofa curled up on my electric throw. All the previous dogs loved the heated throw and whenever I use it Dembe always gives it a good sniff. It was odd seeing him in the corner on it as normally he sleeps on the side nearest the front door or on the big sofa, snuggled on his dads dressing gown.
I was really slow to get ready this morning so our normal routine was all out of whack. Dembe though was more than happy to follow my lead.
We were entertained this evening by Dembe crawling all over Jay, who was shattered after the early start and wanted to lie down on the sofa. Dembe saw that as an invitation to lie on top of his dad and have a cuddle. I swear he thinks he is a puppy still. I don’t know how but at 35kg he never seems that heavy, I think it is because he is so long.
Tuesday 13th October
As usual Jay is day off today. On Tuesdays and Sunday’s Dembe is always a very happy boy as his dad is home with with him all day.
This afternoon Jay took Dembe out for a walk on part of Woodbury Common off Pines Ridge Road. He gave him a good 40 minutes walk, whilst out they bumped into a 9 month old very pale yellow Labrador, that was full of bounce and was doing the play stance with Dembe and indulged in Dembe’s favourite game ever of chase. The pup was a little bit bigger than Dembe and chunkier so show lines unlike Dembe who is working lines. By the time Dembe got back to the car he was covered in mud. He had to be hosed down in the back garden to get all the black mud off him. He was knackered after his play on the common
This evening we had dog training, this was the first session where I was freezing cold. Next week I am wrapping up properly with a hat on! Dembe is doing really well. It is always amazing that he works better off the lead doing heel work than he does on the lead.
There was a young Labrador at the training centre and Dembe was desperate to go and play with it. Thankfully though when we started the lesson he switched on to work mode.
Wednesday 14th October
We had an early start this morning as we had to collect a hire car from Exeter. Dembe was not impressed with the early start! He was as good as gold in the car as he really seems to have settled down on journeys now. Before he used to fuss and cry now he lies down in the car quite happily. He was very tired for the rest of the morning though.
He was very cuddly today and kept climbing up on my lap, getting me to hold his cows ear for him whilst he chewed it.
Martin came and collected Dembe for his walk as Jay was on a late shift today. It was a big day today as it was the first walk where we had said to Martin that we were ok with Dembe being off the lead with him.
It was really funny hearing from Martin that when he did the recall command with Dembe he refused to come back until Martin put his hand in the air. Dembe is very particular even at home, he was trained to do recall with a voice command and a hand signal. He flatly refuses at home to come back to us until we have our hand up, so he was just letting Martin know do it properly or not at all LOL!
Martin said that he did a bit of training on the walk with Dembe, getting D to stay and wait until given the command to retrieve the ball. Unfortunately Dembe was a bugger and refused to have a poo whilst out. This is the second time Dembe has refused to poo on his walk so yet again Jay has had to come home and whip him around the block.
Once Dembe had been out for a walk he stopped crying and fretting and went straight to sleep.
Thursday 15th October
Dembe has been very clingy all week with me. Probably because I haven’t been brilliant health wise. He has been hyper vigilant as well which is slightly annoying as any sound from outdoors he has barked at. He is sleeping almost on top of me at night. He is doing what our Weimaraner Frankie used to do sleeping as close as he can to my left leg, with his head resting just below my knee.
Nurse Frankie was very attune to what was going on with my health and maybe Dembe or should that be Dr Dembe is the same?
Friday 16th October
Dembe’s new toys arrived today. We have bought him a replacement dinosaur, as his original dinosaur the first toy I ever chose for him, was looking a little ragged and needs a bit of sewing done to repair a hole. I bought two so that we always have a back up should anything happen to the other two. Blue dinosaur as it is known is the toy he always brings his dad in the morning when he hears Jay stir.
We also bought Dembe a replacement Carrot as I saw on the website of Pets at Home that they had just launched these again for Christmas, so that accidentally dropped in my basket too.
A week or so ago we had purchased him a Ruff and Tumble Drying Coat as he seems to take an absolute age to dry. He hates the hairdryer and it doesn’t matter how much you towel dry him off he is soaked for ages after. He has a terrible habit of wanting to lie on my legs when he is soaking wet making my clothes damp, so we thought after seeing so many other people recommend them we would give it a go. When it arrived I was in a bit of a panic as the site that I purchased it from had only put the length measurements for the sizing where as the packaging also said about his weight. His length put him in the L size but his weight put him in the XL category which is for large Labradors. He isn’t a large Labrador but I was worried the new coat wouldn’t fit. I managed to get it on him without a fuss and I am happy to report it fitted him perfectly. I took some photos to send Jay as he was working.
I love the second photo as I have managed to capture him with his tongue out, which rarely happens. We chose the Sandringham blue version of the coat.
Saturday 17th October
I was feeling really unwell this morning, I think Dembe knew I wasn’t right as when I woke up up he was lying right beside me. I kept yawning when I was downstairs and Dembe kept yawning back at me. For about 30 minutes we were stuck in a cycle of yawning at each other which was hilarious. He was on the small sofa and I was on the big sofa. Every time he yawned he wagged his tail at me.
We had a play this afternoon as Dembe was fully of beans waiting for his dad to get home after 5pm.
The hire car has been really irritating as it has been set so that only the drivers side opens when unlocked using the key fob. This means every time Dembe or I get into the car Jay has to climb inside and open the doors from there. Whilst they were on their walk this evening I had a look at the operating manual and sussed out what I needed to do to set the central locking so that all doors open when the key fob is pressed. I do wonder what was wrong with leaving child locks as just a button on the drivers side of the vehicle instead of making it a palaver of using the onboard computer. I probably sound like a philistine but I hate all the tech in cars these days.
Dembe is cracking us up, the car is really low, lower than the Happy Dogs van he jumps into for his walk but he still refuses to jump into the car. He gets his front legs on the back seat and then stands there with his arse hanging out waiting for Jay to lift his back end in. He is such a bloody diva that dog!
Sunday 18th October
Sunday as always is a day of rest. I’m feeling awful so Dembe is stuck to my side.
As per usual Jay is on an early shift today so was up at the crack of dawn so that he could watch some American Football before taking Dembe out and then getting ready for work. Dembe is not an early morning dog, he likes his walk at around 5.30-6am and then he comes straight back up to bed with me and sleeps until I get up later. I got up at 7.30am and he didn’t stir until 8.15am.
We had a very lazy day together on the sofa as I was exhausted from last week’s assisting Jay whilst the floor was done in his bedroom. Dembe was happy to oblige with cuddles and kisses. We had a really early night and Dembe was out like a light.
I got up quite late to go to the bathroom and found Dembe at the end of my bed asleep like this.
He sleeps in the strangest positions, he had taken out the crocheted blanket out and is sleeping underneath the cushion of his bed.
Tuesday 6th October
Jay is day off today so Dembe is a very happy bunny today. Thankfully he isn’t shaking his head any longer and the redness in his right ear has really reduced. Thank goodness his ear is now clearing up and if it has responded this quickly it goes to show John the vet was right and it is a fungal infection. Jay has booked in an appointment for a week today for Dembe’s check up and possible next anti fungal treatment.
We had to drive over to the airport today as this was the accident repair place our insurance company uses. Jay had a small accident last Saturday when he took Dembe to the vets and the car needs to be repaired. It is gutting but no one is hurt and we were the only people involved. Dembe was a really good boy on the journey over. For some reason since we got this car Dembe really enjoys lying down on the back seat. In our old car he never laid down, he would sit up and look out of the window unless he was absolutely shattered after dog training.
On the way home we stopped off at the common and Jay took Dembe out for a good run, around 40 minutes. This was his third walk of the day. He was knackered this afternoon.
I washed some of Dembe’s toys today. One of them was his baby blanket that he came home with in January 2019. He still loves to carry this around. It is one of the few toys that hasn’t sustained damage from his teeth!
At 5pm Jay took Dembe for a walk around the block, this was because normally Dembe goes out around this time and his big walk had been much earlier than normal. But that was walk number 4.
I didn’t go to dog training tonight as I wasn’t very well. However the trainers sent me some photos and videos from the evening. Dembe managed to break one of his toys in the warm up.
Dembe was shattered after training and went straight to sleep as usual.
Wednesday 7th October 2020
Dembe loves nothing more than giving us both lots of affection if we are all on the bed together. As hubby and I sleep in separate rooms, due to his snoring and my insomnia it only happens a couple of times a week. Dembe always brings us a toy, usually his blue dinosaur as that is the toy he brings us when upstairs. This was the first toy that I ever bought him.
Dembe just adores his dad and loves nothing more than cuddles with him.
Dinky dot was shattered all day after dog training last night. He slept all afternoon until just before Martin from Happy Dogs arrived to take him out for his afternoon walk as Jay was on a late shift.. Dembe had a good walk but unfortunately refused to poo. About 30 minutes after he got home he started crying and I immediately knew that he wanted a poo. Little sod. I had to ring Jay up and ask him to pop home in his lunch hour as Dembe would need a quick walk around the block so he would go to the toilet.
Jay popped home just after 5pm and took Dembe out, he had two giant turds. So hopefully I will have a whinge free evening with him. The blonde bastard strikes again.
We had a settled and chilled out evening once Dembe had done his business!
Thursday 8th October
Again Dembe is the life and soul of the party today! I can’t complain as I have jobs I want to potter around and do so a sleeping pup is a handy thing to have.
Jay had another early start today and Dembe really doesn’t like early mornings! Other than to have his walk.
I posted on Monday about how Dembe likes tipping / digging all his cushions / throws out of his bed and then sleeping on the base. He does the same with his wicker basket in the lounge. The silly thing is he empties it all and then sleeps beside it on the floor.
Friday 9th October
Dembe is a very cuddly boy today. Whilst I was on my embroidery machine in the kitchen Dembe came in and wanted up on my lap. When he was a tiny pup last year, I would have him on my lap sleeping whilst I was on my embroidery machine. Now however he weighs 35kg and is huge compared to the dinky dot he was, so it can’t happen my legs aren’t big enough. So I have to just give him a cuddle and a kiss.
Dembe always looks forward to his dad coming home at lunch time and will quite often suddenly wake up or stop whatever it is he is doing and between 12.45 and 13.00 he will go to the lounge window and wait for his dad to arrive home. He has already worked out the sound of his dads car pulling up onto the drive and he goes crazy, barking and tail going like mad.
Jay always gives Dembe a walk around the block so that he can go to the toilet and stretch his legs. He uses these lead walks as additional training sessions.
Dembe fell asleep waiting to for his dad to come home.
Saturday 10th October
Jay is late night today so Dembe has had two walks this morning before his dad left for work. Dembe has his little routine that he follows every day and when I am getting myself sorted for the day ahead, Dembe goes to sleep on my bed.
Today Dembe is going on an afternoon walk with my friend Max who also runs a dog walking service called “It’s a Dogs Life”, it is his first time going out with her. I am incredibly nervous as he is our baby. I know Max ( I have known her for years and have worked with her many years ago) will look after him but it is like leaving your baby with someone. You can’t help but worry.
Dembe managed to make me feel like the worst mother ever as he was very nervous about going with Max. He was fine up until he got to her van, he must have realised it wasn’t his usual Happy Dogs van ( who we use during the week) and freaked out a bit. With a bit of gentle persuasion he got in. Max brought him back an hour later, she told me he had been a really good boy and had a poo ( thank goodness) I didn’t want a repeat of Wednesday when Jay had to come home. He must’ve had a good time ( probably also the nerves of being with a new person) as he went to sleep within minutes of Max leaving.
We had a game of nudge about an hour or so later and then he had his dinner. He is now fast asleep beside me on the sofa.
Jay was on an early today, when he went to work Dembe came back up to bed with me – I hadn’t got up. He settled down really quickly and went back to sleep. He has got very good at doing this as he has got older. I really am struggling to believe our little pup will be 2 years old in November. He still seems so tiny to us.
I got up just after 7am but Dembe didn’t make an appearance until gone 7.30am. He really isn’t an early morning dog. He likes an early walk to go to the toilet and then he comes back to bed!
I spent the morning doing bits on my embroidery machine so Dembe alternated between sleeping on the sofa and sleeping upstairs. When Dembe got bored he started bringing me in a different toy every 15-20 minutes to see if he could tempt me away from what I was doing.
When I finished on my machine I took my work outside to photograph. Thankfully Dembe didn’t try to lie on it like he does with my crochet. He was quite happy to lie beside it looking very unimpressed.
In the afternoon Dembe spent a lot of his time snuggled on my lap. I swear he thinks he is a tiny puppy still and it is just my lap that got smaller.
Tuesday 22nd September
Jay took these great photos of Dembe lying on the sofa this morning before we had to go over to my physiotherapy appointment. Jay took Dembe out for another walk whilst I was in there, he had already had a walk this morning and a quick go around the block before setting off for Woodbury. As a result Dembe was pretty shattered by the time I finished my session.
Dembe loves lying out in the back garden, we have had lots of military aircraft flying over us of late and an air ambulance. Dembe loves sitting / lying watching these as they fly over which is in direct contrast to our previous dogs who used to freak out at any loud noise.
I love the next photo I took as it looks like he is saying “Good god woman be quiet I am trying to watch the helicopters”
When I went upstairs to get ready for dog training this evening, I found that Dembe had tried to steal my trainer from my room only to get caught out by the stair banister!
Dog training went well this evening, he didn’t bark anywhere near as much as he did the first week. He did show us up though by refusing to let go of his toy – which he does at home with no issues, little bugger. He pulled Jay over when he decided he wasn’t going to let Jay have his purple Rhino.
Dembe was shattered after dog training and slept all the way home. When we got in he lay on the rug and went to sleep.
Wednesday 23rd September
Dembe was shattered today had Jay slept past his normal waking up time I don’t think we would have seen Dembe until gone 8am. He was sound asleep from the minute we got home from dog training.
I wormed him today. I have a dreadful feeling I forgot to do it last month with all the stress of the road traffic accident and having the car written off. I certainly never wrote on the calendar that I had done it which I would have done normally. At least he is more than happy to take them in a cheese triangle! He is being really funny with his food today so he may have to go hungry if he doesn’t eat.
We had lots of cuddles on the sofa again with him sat on my lap.
This afternoon for the first time ever he jumped up when I was stood at the end of the bed and put his feet on my shoulders and licked my face, I was stood with my back to him so he made me jump. He normally only does this if I am sat down.
Thursday 24th September
Jay is on a late night today , so Dembe was out early and then again at 11.30am for a walk around the block. It is quite good he gets a lead walk every day as it means Jay can do a bit of lead work training with him.
We made Dembe’s meals for the month today before Jay went to work. Dembe was hanging around waiting for any scraps to hit the floor.
I managed or should I say we managed to neglect to book today’s dog walk. Jay never gave me any late nights for this week. Thankfully we realised on Monday and I was able to contact Happy dogs and get it booked in which was a life saver. So Dembe will be off out with Martin this afternoon.
Martin arrived at 2pm to collect Dembe, who was so good and he waited at the front door to be clipped onto Martins lead. He always races off down the drive now and jumps into the back. He can’t wait to go off on his adventures with Martin for an hour. When he came back I was expecting him to be quiet but no he was bouncing off the walls for a few hours.
He keeps going to the fridge and begging for corned beef, if you give him a cocktail sausage he spits it out until he is quite sure there is to be no corned beef on offer! Cheeky sod.
Friday 25th September
Well Jay and I have been married for 20 years today. Crazy right? He doesn’t have the day off and is on a 9-6 so it is just me and the boy until he gets home for lunch and again when he finishes work this evening.
When Jay goes back to work at lunchtime Dembe will quite often sit at the window like this and watch his dad reverse off the drive. He normally stays there for a bit and has a cuddle with me. He really misses his dad when he isn’t home. He is going to have a lovely week next week as Jay is off work and on holiday for the week.
I was giving Dembe’s tummy a rub in this photo, as you can see he was enjoying it.
As it was our anniversary my friend on Instagram Carolyn sent Dembe a toy as she didn’t want him to be left out. We did have a laugh though as I had the exact same toy delivered the day before so now Dembe has two ducks. But it doesn’t matter as he will love to play with both of them.
I had the hairdresser come over today and do my hair for me. Dembe was very good whilst she was here…apart from when I washed my hair and then he barked quite a bit so I had to shout and tell him to be quiet.
Saturday 26th September
We had a quiet day today as me and the boy were shattered! Plus Dembe hates being woken up early when his dad is on the early shift.
Dembe was a little sod with his breakfast this morning had three small mouthfuls and then refused to eat anything else. He wants corned beef and only corned beef so today he will be very hungry. By the time Jay gave him his dinner this evening he was famished and he ate it all without any embellishments! He always caves quite easily thankfully I just hate having to keep him hungry to make him eat.
Sunday 27th September
Dembe is a happy boy as his daddy is home today. He has been sprawled out over his dad at every available opportunity. He even looks like he is smiling! I used the time to do some bits on my embroidery machine.
Jay took Dembe on a nice long walk this afternoon where they met lots of doggies and Dembe got to run around like a crazed idiot playing chase, which is his favourite game.
He is now snuggled up beside me whilst I transfer his diary entries onto his blog.
As usual for a Monday Jay was on an early shift. I had a terrible nights sleep so ended up getting up 3.30am when Jay got up. Dembe was not impressed at all with both of us rising so early. He isn’t a morning dog at all. Jay took him out at 4.30am and Dembe was happy to come back to bed with me and we slept until around 8.30am.
I had a lazy day with Dembe due to the lack of sleep. I did some crochet, very slowly as since the accident I am having problems with my neck and back.
Yet again when I have gone to take some photos of the work I have done on my crocheted blankets Dembe immediately lies on them!
Tuesday 15th September 2020
We are back to dog training this evening and we can’t wait. It feels like we haven’t been in such a very long time.
It has been a stressful day here and Dembe is picking up on it. The washing machine broke down with Jay’s work uniform inside. Dembe was incredibly well behaved whilst the engineer was here fixing it.
He has had 4 walks today so should be absolutely shattered but is still running around like a hyper lunatic. We did think that he may be a bit naughty tonight as he was so unsettled today, he was ok not brilliant but ok.
He was absolutely shattered after dog training this evening and went to sleep in the back of the car on the way home.
Wednesday 16th September
Dembe slept until 7am this morning…unheard of he must have been tired from last night. However when Jay got up with him he found a pile of sick in the lounge. I got up to help them clear up. Luckily it was on the laminate and not the rug like he usually does.
Dembe does seem a little under the weather today and quite lethargic
He has been eating ok so I am not too concerned. He does seem to throw up every now and again but is always ok the following day. He refused his breakfast but he has eaten sausages, his frozen kong and a denta stick. So he isn’t unwell in the respect that he must see a vet.
Jay took him for a walk around the block before he went to work and he surprised Jay by doing two enormous poo’s. It always amazes me as a dog owner how easily impressed we are when it comes to dogs and their bowels!
Martin came and got Dembe around 14.30 and took him out for a nice long walk on the common. He said he wouldn’t have known Dembe had been under the weather this morning as he was running about and having lots of wee’s .
Dembe was ready to settle really early tonight at 6pm so I took full advantage! We had an early night and watched Heartland, which I have started watching from the start again even though I have only just finished the last 13 seasons! A little bit addicted.
Thursday 17th September
Jay was middle shift today which Dembe always struggles with the wait until 6pm for his evening walk even though Jay walks him around the block at lunch time. We had lots of cuddles today and in the afternoon we played find it with his elephant toy which Dembe really enjoyed.
Friday 18th September
Jay was late night tonight, so he got to spend a nice amount of time with Dembe before he went to work at 12pm. Dembe and I played upstairs whilst I attempted to give my bedroom a tidy up. Dembe didn’t hear Martin arrive at 3pm until he rang the door bell. He was a very good boy and waited whilst Martin put the lead on and then ran down the drive and jumped into the back of the van! Makes me laugh how he would insist on being lifted in initially until Martin made it clear that he had to jump in.
As usual Dembe enjoyed himself out of the walk, meeting a lady Labrador and having a good game of Labrador zoomies. He is a ladies man our Dembe!
He was shattered after his walk up the common
We managed to get up to bed reasonably early, before 7pm and had lots of cuddles whilst watching the tv waiting for Daddy to get home at 10pm.
Saturday 19th September
Jay was on another middle shift today. Dembe was full of beans today and playing lots of games of nudge and find it.
He wasn’t very happy when his dad went to work this morning and refused to kiss his dad goodbye like he normally would. As soon as Jay was gone Dembe put himself up to bed and snuggled into Jays dressing gown on the bed.
Jay was late getting home for lunch well past 1pm his usual time. So Dembe stayed at the window looking for him, waiting for him to arrive.
He was very barky this afternoon. I managed to catch this photo of him just before he went to bark whilst waiting for his dad to get home.
He was so crazy with energy after I gave him his dinner at 4.30pm he conked out and went to sleep with his head on my foot. Something he hasn’t done for a long time.
I bought Dembe a new toy and that arrived today. It is a hedgehog and has a squeak in it. Dembe will sit and do the squeak repeatedly until he manages to break the squeak.
Sunday 20th September
Dembe is a happy dog as mum and dad are home together today. He woke up at 5am and had a walk and then he woke me up just before 9am. I can’t believe both of us slept in so late, very unusual but I have had a rubbish week sleep wise this week.
Dembe has spent the day draped over his dad.
We are having a bit of an Indian Summer here the temperatures are well above average for this time of year. Dembe is finding he is getting very hot after his walks so he likes to lay on the patio slabs to cool down.
Jay is working his usual Monday morning early shift. Dembe is incredibly soppy today, I can’t move without being covered in kisses. When I am sat on the sofa I am being laid on. He demands that either I hold his cows ear whilst he chews it or that he has a cuddle. He also wants to play endless games of nudge.
Tuesday 8th September
Jay is day off today so Dembe was out early for a nice long walk, then back to bed for a few hours. I had a physiotherapy session booked for 11.45am so before we left Jay walked Dembe around the block as with Covid rules he can’t just drop me off , we have to wait in the car for the physiotherapist to come and get me. We were stuck in the car for ages despite leaving late.
When I eventually got called in Jay took Dembe for a long walk on Woodbury common at the Woodbury Castle site. They met lots of dogs who all played with Dembe. By the time we got home at 13.30 Dembe was knackered.
He spent the afternoon asleep, we took him out for a little walk this evening just so he could go to the toilet before bed. He spent most of the day asleep.
Dembe had to be persuaded with a cocktail sausage to go upstairs to bed! He is so easy. He has been spending most nights fast asleep on my bed as the temperature is dropping overnight.
Next week we will be back at obedience training, we missed the last one due to the car accident so it feels like it has been ages since we have been at class.
Wednesday 9th September
Dembe is still knackered after his mega walk yesterday on top of his usual walks.
This morning I found him on his dads bed. He loves lying on his bed and sleeping there if I am busy in the morning. He reminds me of Mollie who was Jays dog. She passed away on 5th January 2019 and is very much missed by the both of us. It is lovely that Dembe is both our dogs especially since he started attending the obedience training sessions with Jay.
Dembe was very excited when Jay popped home for lunch , he brought him two dinosaurs in succession as he couldn’t work out in his excitement what to parade in front of his dad! Jay took him out for a walk around the block. Apparently the builders on the next street over stop and say hello to Dembe on every lunch time walk.
Today on his walk Dembe came across a lady carrying her child on her shoulders something Dembe hasn’t seen before so he barked the place down. Thankfully the lady and her child laughed. All Dembe’s hair went up.
Thursday 10th September
No idea what has got into Dembe this week but he is extraordinarily soppy this week. Whilst I was having my morning cuppa he plonked himself on my lap and sat there for ages.
Whilst I got on with my day Dembe made himself comfortable on the small sofa.
He will quite often sleep on his back in the sun on the sofa.
His new ID tag arrived today as we will be switching him over to his winter collar shortly. I wanted him to have a nice new ID tag so I didn’t have to lose my nails taking his current one off his summer collar.
We got this one from Sweet William Designs and it came very quickly. All the legal stuff that we need on an ID tag in the UK is on the back.
Friday 11th September
Jay is on his third early of the week today. As we had already cancelled one walk this week, we didn’t want to mess the dog walker around by cancelling another, so we kept his walk for this afternoon. Jay popped home at lunch time to give Dembe a quick walk around the block so he wasn’t desperate to go out.
I have been working on a crochet blanket and Dembe always loves lying on my crocheted blankets
I always laugh and call him the crochet inspector.
Dembe has become obsessed with his carrot again the last few days and this is now what he is greeting Jay with.
Martin arrived just before 3pm for Dembe. Dembe was keen to go as soon as he realised it was Martin at the door. He never gives me a backwards glance which has really put my mind at rest. Initially I was really scared about letting Dembe go with someone else out of my site, none of my other dogs have done this. So it was a HUGE deal for Jay and I. However Dembe was like a coiled spring when Jay was on a late night and with him refusing to have a poo in the garden ( Dembe not Jay) it made it a necessity that he was taken out for a walk. Dembe adores Martin, although when they get back Dembe can’t wait to get back in the house!
Dembe was still full of beans when Martin dropped him off which is unusual as normally he would flake out either on the cold stones of the patio or on the floor. He was bouncing around all over the place. 15 minutes after he got home, Jay walked through the door, so we went straight up to my parents van as they were staying at their caravan. It is only the second time we have been there this year, Dembe loves going there as there are lots of new smells and he gets to play with Maggie my parents Jack Russell. He was shattered by the time he got home.
Saturday 12th September
Jay is on a late night today which is a pain in the bum as we dont have a dog walker booked for Dembe. So this morning Dembe has had two huge walks on the common and I just hope we aren’t creating a fit idiot. He was pretty settled for me all day bless him.
I managed to finish my blanket and I whipped it outside to take some photos. Dembe was fast asleep on the sofa. As soon as the blanket touched the floor he was lying on it! He loves it for some reason. Possibly because it will smell of me due to me handling the yarn. It has been popped in the wash now to reduce the Dembe hair being gifted with it!
Dembe is still a very cuddly boy and spent ages with his head on my lap this afternoon.
Sunday 13th September
Dembe had a lie on this morning not waking up until 5.40am, I woke up when they came back from the walk as his feet were wet and cold from the dew on the grass up the common. He settled down quickly and went back to sleep. When I woke up after 8am he was in with his dad. As soon as he heard me stir he came in and gave me a cuddle.
He is being a bit of a sod with his eating again. Quite often he is only having one meal a day in the evening as he just turns his nose up at his breakfast. We are holding fast and if he doesn’t eat his breakfast he gets it for his dinner. Ive never known such a pain in the bum. If it is anything he shouldn’t eat or shouldn’t eat a lot of he is all over it! He turned his nose up yesterday at cocktail sausages as his dad had given him ham from the fridge earlier in the day and suddenly cocktail sausages weren’t good enough.
Dembe is a happy soul today as his dad is home all day with him. He got quite upset when his dad went outside to clean the car with out him. He really dies love us being all together on Jays days off.
Both Jay and I have been really poorly all week with a head cold and generally feeling pretty awful so I haven’t kept up to date with Dembe’s diary properly. I did however take photos so I will share those with you.
Monday 31st August 2020
It is a bank holiday in England today so Jay is home and Dembe is loving every minute. He is getting better when Jay leaves the house now and doesn’t get so upset. Just as well as Jay had to go out in the afternoon to get our dashcam fitted.
Tuesday 1st September
Dembe a very happy boy as Daddy is still home and won’t be going back to work until tomorrow at 1pm. Both me and Jay are poorly with sore throats and a head cold.
Wednesday 2nd September
Jay is on a late night today, Dembe was supposed to have been going out with a friend of ours who is also a dog walker this afternoon but she has taken a tumble. So Jay is popping home at his lunch time at around 5pm so that he can take Dembe out and walk him on the common.
When Jay was out on Monday he went to Pets at Home and got Dembe a new monkey as his big grey Monkey had to be thrown away as it’s arms had become untied and there were holes in the body. Dembe is loving the new Monkey and is proudly showing it off to all who see him.
The crochet inspector is back! I have spent a lot of time on the sofa this week recovering from this head cold . Dembe likes lying on my crochet whenever I try to take a photo of it.
He did settle for me nicely this evening I was worried after him not getting his usual hours walk due to Jay being on a late night and only being able to give him a short walk on the common.
Thursday 3rd August
Friday 4th September
I felt absolutely dreadful today and had no voice. Sadly I didn’t take any photos of Dembe. He has been a bit hit and miss about eating again so today I tried moving his bowl into the lounge to see if he would eat his meal better. It was an instant hit. As I took the bowl through into the lounge he was jumping up and was doing little spins, he hasn’t been that excited about a meal since he was a tiny puppy. He ate the meal without any need for me to do any cheer-leading or to pick bits up and feed them to him. So going forward we will move his meals into the lounge to see if that helps.
Saturday 5th September
I’m feeling much better today, I really did feel awful yesterday and didnt know what to do with myself. Dembe was very cuddly so we spent the day watching tv on the sofa.
Dembe was quite hyper all day probably because he has been so quiet all week knowing that Jay and I are feeling unwell. I managed to capture him doing zoomies on my bed in the afternoon. I know people don’t believe me when I say I make my bed every day when they see the state of it . However it is usually because a little strawberry blonde dog has been doing this on it!
As you can see the trail of destruction left behind Dembe when he is being hyper! all the toys out of the toy box all strewn across the floor, all the cushions off the sofa onto the floor. He is so very cute and loving it is very hard to get cross with him on the days he lets off steam.
He spent the majority of Saturday morning fast asleep which probably didnt help in the afternoon when he was so hyper.
Sunday 6th September
Jay and I are still poorly with this head cold, so we are having a quiet day. Dembe is happy as the whole pack is together. He really is much calmer and more settled when his dad is home and we are all together for the day.
He was a good boy this morning and let me sleep ( after his 5am wake up to go out for a walk) until gone 8.30am which was needed! He has been pretty chilled out ever since.
This week we paid the deposit for Dembe’s next set of obedience training lessons. They start on 15th of September and we are looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.
