W/C 20th May H2O-M-G this is fun!

Monday 20th May 2019

Dembe was up early as Jay was on his usual Monday morning start time. He has been coping well with all my bedroom contents being all over the place as I am getting a new (2nd hand ) wardrobe delivered today. The Weimaraners could never cope with their environment being messed with and would get very stressed. Even moving furniture for decorating was enough to upset them. Thankfully Dembe takes it all in his stride.

He was really good when the delivery men arrived . One of them was his Uncle Paul so he loved having a massive cuddle off him. He was exceptionally well behaved as I sorted through all my stuff and slowly put everything back. It took ages as I kept having to have a rest. Dembe just lay on my pillows and just watched me, coming and giving me a cuddle whenever I stopped.

Jay got home after 5pm so Dembe was given a good run up the common as regular readers will know Dembe is not a fan of early morning walks – he refuses to leave the car. So on a Monday he has a long walk in the evening and if he is being particularly bouncy Jay will give him a walk around the block on his lunch hour.

Paul popped in on his way home from work and had a good cuddle with Dembe again. He really does adore him.

Dembe and I had a lie down on Monday afternoon for a few hours

Tuesday 21st May

Jay was day off today so we took Dembe to Woodbury Castle . It was so early that we were the only people there. Dembe had a lovely time running around and exploring the woods.

Wednesday 22nd May

Jay had stocktake at work today so was up at 2.30am and in work for 4am. We did wonder how Dembe would cope with Jay getting up early and if he would beg for his breakfast. Luckily Dembe was very good and although he got up a couple of times to see what Jay was doing he did come back to bed and settled down with me. He didn’t wake up for his breakfast at 6.05am, so I got him his breakfast and then let him out in the back garden so he could do his business. We then went back to bed and neither of us woke up until 8am which was lovely!

Jay was home from work just after 1pm, due to my mouth being painful after the extraction last week I was back at the dentist at 2,30pm. Jay took Dembe up the common whilst I was being sorted out. I had started to develop a dry socket.

This evening I taught Dembe to pull my socks off. I saw on the Broadleaf puppy group on social media that a friend of mine had taught her puppy Reggie to pull her socks off. This is the sort of thing I wanted to teach Dembe, so I asked her how she had done it and she broke down the training for me. As Dembe has always liked playing with my socks in the evening when I take them off for bed, I knew he was already interested in them. It would have been far more difficult if he had shown zero interest in them.

Initially I started with putting the sock loosely over my hand and saying “Dembe Sock”. On my first go he pulled the sock off my hand. I was utterly thrilled and gave him lots and lots of praise and cuddles. I was also aware that he might do this once and it had just been sheer coincidence. So I repeated the command and he did it again. I repeated this a few more times and then I put the sock loosely on my foot and said the same command “Dembe Sock” he pulled the sock off no problem at all. I repeated this a few more times and then shot this video

He is such a clever pup

Thursday 23rd May

This week Dembe has been waking up a lot later for his breakfast, he has been regularly sleeping past 5.30am which has been really lovely as I am not a fan of really early mornings. As Dembe was very active from the off we got him out and up the common by around 8.15am.

Jay gave him a nice long walk on the common as he was on a late night finish today. On the way back from the walk we popped into The Range and picked Dembe up a rigid paddling pool. We filled it up as soon as we got home, Dembe went a bit crazy!

We have never seen him so excited he had no clue what to do with himself. He stayed outside playing with his paddling pool until gone 2pm.

He adores his paddling pool

He was so tired he put himself to sleep up on my bed for a few hours. He really did enjoy himself.

This evening I got him to do the sock trick again, whilst we were outside on the patio. Dembe took my sock’s off fine however he then took the too the paddling pool and dropped them in there. That trick may still need some work!

Friday 24th May

We have had Dembe home with us now 20 weeks. The time has flown by. Jay and I can’t believe how much we love this little guy. He is now 28 weeks old.

At 8 weeks old Dembe liked nothing better than to chew my ties on my snuggle top. At 28 weeks old he still loves doing it but I can only fit his head on my lap instead of his whole body.

I have been working on grooming him this week as he is moulting like you wouldn’t believe. He has never liked being groomed. Even as a pup he would turn around and sink his teeth in to his brush. I have been working with him little by little with lots of treats and praise so that I can brush him with a furminator and his ordinary brush.

I’m not saying Dembe is spoilt but his dad bought some artificial turf to go under his paddling pool so he didn’t slip on the paving slabs when he was jumping in and out. This is Jay filling up Dembe’s paddling pool at 7.52am.

Dembe loves sitting on this particular garden chair. He launches off it into the paddling pool or he just sits there and sunbathes.

Today Dembe and I met a lady called Claire, who I have known for a few years on social media but we have never met in person, despite living in the same town as we both suffer from a multitude of health conditions. Dembe took a real shine to her and constantly wanted her attention and for her to throw his ball. He was absolutely exhausted by the end of her visit and was really sleepy for the rest of the day.

Saturday 25th May

Dembe has had me in stitches from first thing this morning. He is such a character

He loves having a good old nose out of the front window watching the world go by. I have nose art all over the lounge window. He reminds me a lot of our Weimaraner Willow when he does this as she was always up on the sofa looking out of the window. He has taken it a step further now and climbs up onto the window ledge completely now.

He had another day enjoying the paddling pool, sunshine and the garden!

Sunday 26th May

Poor Dembe has been absolutely shattered today after his three days of non stop fun in the garden and paddling pool. The weather hasn’t been great either with overcast grey skies and the odd spot of rain!

He has been really into his daddy today spending time having cuddles on the sofa and sleeping next to him whilst daddy played on his PS4. Every so often Dembe would wander into the kitchen to check on me as I was using my embroidery machine quilting cushion fronts for the garden chairs.

He has had two lovely walks up the common and has enjoyed his very quiet Sunday.

W/C 13th May 2019

Monday 13th May

Due to Dembe’s continued reluctance to go out at 4.30am when Jay is on an early shift and lets face it who can blame him? No walk was attempted today his first day back from holiday. As we have issues with the car, we were told the cambelt was on the way out ( on top of a huge list of other faults) Jay has been nursing the car through until we get the new one later this week. So it is essential travel only whilst it is in this state.

I was knackered when Jay and the boy got up so attempted to stay in bed only the blonde hairy bastard was having none of it. After he had his breakfast and toilet trip he bounded upstairs and proceeded to bash me on the head with numerous toys until eventually on the verge of throttling him due to my strong desire to stay in bed I got up.

As soon as Jay left for work, just after 6am said blonde hairy bastard took himself back upstairs to bed. Fuming that I was now wide awake I made him come back down stairs and prodded him at various intervals when he had gone back to sleep.

He did however behave beautifully today and kept himself occupied whilst I got some prep work for some sewing done. I always panic a bit when it goes quiet so periodically I go and check on him as one of the Weimaraners…. Willow chewed the handbrake off one of our cars in less than 2 minutes. So I am well aware of the trail of destruction puppies ( and Willow was a fully grown mature dog of 5 when she decided to eat the handbrake) can wreak. Dembe is pretty exceptional in the fact he only has to be told no once and he doesn’t attempt to chew the item again. We have been incredibly lucky that despite the house being full of lots of solid pine furniture he hasn’t ( so far) used any of it as a chew toy.

I had to take this photo Monday as it looks like I own a headless dog!

Tuesday 14th May

Dembe was manic from the word go this morning. He was so bouncy that Jay took him out for a long walk up the common relatively early. They decided to have a bit of an explore and managed to link up two separate walks that he had been trying to see how they joined together for a while. Dems had a good run around off the lead and stayed nice and close to Jay as he was unsure of what direction Jay was going to go in. When they got back Dembe was still bouncy and only finally settled down at 10.10am.

Jay and I decided that as it was sunny we would paint the remaining fence panels and posts. I did all the bits I could sit down and do whilst Jay did all the rest. Dembe of course had to see what it was I was doing whilst sat on the floor, that always means I get smothered in kisses. His nosiness though meant he got blue ( well seagrass ) coloured fence paint all over his foot and he was an absolute nightmare to get to stay still so That I could wipe it off. After that adventure Dembe decided to stay in the house and go to sleep on the sofa whilst we finished outside.

In the afternoon Jay took Dembe out again for another longish walk.

Wednesday 15th May

As Jay was late night today Dembe had a really good long walk up the common again in the hope that it would keep him relatively calm for me, whilst Jay was working. Jay is on a really strange shift today 2pm until 11pm to help the night team. So it really confused Dembe when Jay started getting ready for work.

We decided today that we would increase Dembe’s food allowance up to the next weight bracket as there is no way that his final weight is going to be 25kg when he is 20kg before he is 6 months old and he still has a lot of growing to do. Plus he has been acting like he is really really hungry all the time and he is looking a bit ribby. So we have taken his food to 200g for breakfast and dinner. If he starts looking porky on this or starts gaining weight too rapidly then we will reduce the portion size down again.

Today I had to adjust his collar as his neck has filled out a bit more so he is on the second to last notch rather than the smallest one now. I am glad I bought a collar that has plenty of room to grow in it ( around 10cm ) as otherwise I would be forking out for expensive collars all the time. This one wasn’t cheap at around £35 from Dogs & Horses but it is a beautiful pale grey and it looks beautiful against his red / yellow fur.

Dembe was a really good boy for me all afternoon as I worked again on some prep for a sewing project. Later in the afternoon as the weather was nice we played in the back garden. He is very good when it is just the two of us and he takes his role of protecting me very seriously. Barking at every strange noise so I have to reassure him that everything is ok.

Look I can touch my nose with my back feet whilst I am asleep

Look at that face xx

Thursday 16th May

Can you believe it Dembe is six months old today? He has become such a handsome boy who is so loving and protective.

Dembe has wanted a lot of my attention this week. I think he has been picking up on our stress levels. There are other things going on, whilst waiting for the car has been really stressful as we have been severely limited where we can go due to the fact the car isn’t very reliable. I also have the dentist tomorrow for a tooth extraction and I have a phobia about the dentist. So he can just probably feel the stress coming off me in waves.

When he wants my attention he can be really whingey, I try really hard not to respond to his whines as I don’t want to teach him that whining gets my attention. He has to learn that I am not wrapped around his little paw although sometimes it feels as if I am.Fr

It is really hard not to react though as I am always scared that he has hurt himself or is unwell even though I know those cries would be different. It is frustrating when he is this demanding of my time as all he wants me to do is sit on the sofa so he can sleep with his legs or his head touching me! He doesn’t even want me to play. I think he has been feeling unsettled due to the stress vibe in the house currently.

Friday 17th May

As I have a dentists appointment at 9.35am Jay was waiting until he dropped me off to take Dembe down the beach. Dembe thoroughly enjoyed his time down the beach playing chase with lots of dogs. Jay said he was absolutely shattered after 30 minutes of running around with all of his new friends.

The dentist took longer than expected my tooth was refusing to come quietly. It was a bit of a nightmare as Jay was waiting at home to come to get me and had organised a lift to the garage 12 miles away. As he was just leaving the house with Dembe, his lift arrived ( Sarah) so for the first time ever Dembe was left without either Jay or I. Sarah said all he wanted to do was play and was good as gold. I think Jay and I were more stressed out than he was. Sarah took some lovely photos of him.

When Jay had come back from the beach without me Dembe had searched the house for me crying as he did. He then went up to out bedroom and went to sleep on the bed wrapped up on my snuggle top.

Jay popped home at 4pm as the old car was being taken by the car breakers. Poor Dembe cried and cried when Jay went back to work. He wanted his daddy to be home for the evening so the pack was all back together. Thankfully he did settle quite quickly as we were both knackered we had an early night.

Saturday 18th May

Jay had an early start and despite the fact we now had the new car we let Dembe sleep. He isn’t really a morning person. As soon as Jay went to work Dembe and I went back to bed and slept for another 90 minutes. It was needed!

For the first time this week Jay came back for lunch. Dembe was beside himself with excitement to see his dad this early in the day.

Dembe was really good this afternoon, mainly because I bribed him with a bone and allowed me to get some sewing done. My mouth was less sore than it had been Friday and it was a good distraction from the pain.

In the evening Dembe and I got to have our first trip out in the new car! As Jay took us both up to the common so that Dems could have a really good run around. The car was really lovely and despite it being a diesel is much quieter than our last car.

I only managed to sew for a short period of time on Saturday. As soon as I stopped for the day. Dembe snuggled right up beside me and went to sleep.

Ignore the mess of my bedroom I am having a new wardrobe delivered so everything from my wardrobe is down one side of my bed. I woke up in the night and needed a pee, I looked over to discover Dembe flat on his back airing his ginger nuts. Obviously he feels very safe and secure with us.

Sunday 19th May

Dembe was full of beans this morning so Jay and I took him out up the common before 8am. Jay took some photos of him on their walk

We decided after getting home and having a coffee etc that we would go out for a drive in the new car. Firstly so that Jay could get used to it and secondly to get Dembe better at car journeys ( longer ones) .

We decided to go up to Dartmoor near Okehampton and let Dembe have his very first run around. We found a nice flat area where I could use my mobility scooter and just pootle about a bit. It was really nice if not a bit chilly and windy. De,be really enjoyed himself and had a nice run around. He was pretty good in the car and slept all the way home.

w/c 6th May a week of weird sleep positions

Monday 6th May

I have to admit this week I have been really rubbish at keeping Dembe’s diary. My routine is all to pot as Jay is on holiday this week and as usual there is loads going on behind the scenes. Dembe is fine it is just adulting stuff, the stuff that makes you lose sleep through stress. So Dembe cuddles have been gratefully received.

First thing Monday morning we got Dembe out up at the Warren on Woodbury common. He had lots of fun playing with many different dogs. Jay took him on a longer walk and one he hadn’t done before so Dembe stayed close and didn’t run off into the distance as he is prone to do on walks he knows well.

On his evening walk he saw two joggers and freaked out a bit and ran behind Jay which made him laugh. He is really funny with what things freak him out. He is still barking at the printer whenever something is printed out. We have no idea why he takes exception to the printer!

Tuesday 7th May

Dembe slept really well last night. He had his breakfast at 5am and then slept until 6.45am which was a nice lie on for us all. As Jay had a dental appointment at 9.15 he was out up the common nice and early for a walk.

Today he has learned how to open the net curtain in the lounge by using his new toy Ducky. He hold ducky’s head in his mouth and uses the body to swipe across the curtain to shift it out of the way.

He has obviously worked out that I am a bag of nerves today, I also have the dentist today. So he has followed me everywhere. I can’t move without tripping up on him. Whilst I was at the dentist Jay took Dembe down the beach for a run around. The beach is now closed off for dogs apart from two small areas. He had a wonderful time chasing a lady Labrador called Bella. They played together for ages. Then another Labrador came along and joined in as well. By the time Jay picked me up from the dentist Dembe was fast asleep in the back of the car.

Wednesday 8th May

We have spent most of the week at home during Jays holiday, just pottering around the house or garden.

We took Dembe down to the vets this morning for his monthly weigh in. He loves the vets so much he can’t wait to get in the door and be fussed all over. He was a very good boy and sat on the scales for me with me using a treat to get him in the right position. He weighs 20kg which is 3stone (14 x 3 for those who use pounds) . I know he is getting heavy as I can now barely lift him onto my lap even if we are both sitting down. He looks so slight though at the moment and is all legs.

We did laugh at lunch time when he decided to sit so close to Jay whilst he ate his lunch that he had his paws on the table. Good table manners though as he kept his elbows off.

He was quite sleepy all day but decided to run riot in the last hour before going to bed.

I managed to capture this photo of him in the nano seconds that he sat still for.

Thursday 9th May

Today Dembe is 25 weeks and 6 days. The photo on the left is Dembe aged 15 weeks the photo on the right was taken this week. It is amazing to see just how much he has grown in just 10 weeks. His snout has got longer his head has got bigger. At the moment he is looking very slight and all legs. He still has a wonderful temperament and is very loving.

On Dembe’s afternoon walk we had a bit of excitement as we discovered a very young Pheasant chick beside the car. Whilst Jay walked Dembe I kept an eye on it to see if its parents would come and get it. No one turned up for it. It was quite obvious the chick was getting very tired and cold, it was so young its eyes weren’t even open yet. When Dembe got back to the car he had noticed that there was something on the ground so I had to step in and scoop the chick up into Jays Redskins cap . We took it to the vets for them to either give us advice on who to contact or for them to look after. It chirped all the way to the vets and Dembe was very interested to see what was inside the hat.

Thankfully he was still really pleased to go to the vets and pulled Jay all the way to the front door. One of nurses is going to rear it, if it survives the next few days. We think a predator possibly a dog or a fox had disturbed the nest and scattered the chicks. This chick had been alone for sometime and was so tired it could no longer stand up. I couldn’t have left it. By taking it to the vets I hope I am giving it the best chance at life.

Dembe was exhausted after all the excitement and was falling asleep in the weirdest positions.

Both Dembe and I were asleep before 7pm.

Friday 10th May

We got Dembe out early as we had the car going into the garage at 8.30am. For the first time ever at arriving at Woodbury castle we were the only car there. Dembe had a crazy run around and enjoyed himself. Just as well because the rest of the day was really stressful.

At around 9.20am we had a call from the garage to say they couldn’t do the repair because the cambelt was in such a bad way it could go at any time. The car is only worth about £200-£300 and the repair just for the cambelt was going to be £400 plus as the exhaust also needed fixed and I am sure the brakes needed done too. It wasn’t worth the money of it being repaired when it was going to cost more than the car was worth. We took the decision that we would look for a new car. The cambelt if it goes will destroy the car’s engine, so even driving it to the garage could be disastrous. It was really stressful as we were in the position where we needed to buy a new car but had no transport to actually get to any garages.

I did a big search online and managed to find us a decent second hand car at a village 12 miles away. Thankfully my parents had come up to their van, so my dad could give me Jay and Dembe a lift over to the garage to check the car out. It is the same as we have got now just two years younger and is a bigger model. Basically I can get my mobility scooter and Dembe’s crate in the back of the car now and it has 7 seats…there is just the two of us and Dembe. That keeps making us chuckle.

After being in my dad’s car for the first time and being very well behaved Dembe crashed as soon as we got home.

It was a strange day for him as he reached the grand old age of 26 weeks, it was also his first day without any lunch as he from now on ( as long as he doesn’t kick up too much) will be fed just twice a day on his full adult portion.

Again Dembe and I were asleep before 7.30pm we were both shattered.

Saturday 11th May

Dembe was up at 4.45am for his breakfast and slept until around 6am. I couldn’t stay in bed any longer as my back was killing me. He loves the whole pack being together so he went and woke Jay up at 6.45am by jumping all over him!

Jay took Dembe out for a walk and when he returned said he was crazy all the way around. He only had a 20 minutes sleep this morning and when he did, he was in this weird pose.

It looks so strange that it looks photo shopped but hand on heart it isn’t. It has been a week of Dembe sleeping in the weirdest positions. When I came downstairs after sorting myself out for the day Dembe assumed his normal position by the window

He just loves watching the world go by and barking at the seagulls! He has had quite a frenetic morning as we had to empty out the old car today ready for when we either sell it or get it taken away as scrap. At some point either mid to end of the week Jay will be getting the new car.

Whilst I was sat on the front wall with Dembe on a lead our next door neighbours came out and had a massive fuss of him. Dembe is never one to refuse a cuddle. Then a little while later my parents popped over with their dog Maggie a jack russell terrier. He loves playing with Maggie although he gets on her nerves a bit because he is a puppy and full of beans. He never learns when the other dog has had enough. As soon as they left he crashed out! Which made the whole new situation of no more lunch a bit easier as he was fast asleep.

Dembe and I went up to bed at around 18.40 last night as we were both shattered. He fell asleep with his head in my lap. He always looks after me when I am feeling poorly bless him.

Sunday 12th May

Dembe was up at a good time he woke up at 4.50am for his breakfast and toilet trip, he then slept until 6.30am. He would have slept longer but I woke with a jolt thinking I could hear him cry and he was lying beside me. The speed at which I jolted awake woke him and there was no getting him back to sleep. It reminds me of that joke they tell about they should make alarm clocks that have an alarm which is the sound of a dog being sick, that way you would never oversleep! Thankfully I must have just dreamt he was crying by the baby gate that we have on my bedroom door. He is so good though regularly going 8 hours over night now.

He is a happy puppy today as it is bone day. He is allowed two raw beef marrow bones a week and his week starts on Sunday. We let him have a chew for as long as it holds his interest and then we wrap it and put it in the fridge. They will keep for a few days. Once he has removed all the marrow bone he will get another one. But two is the limit for the week as they are quite high in fat and I don’t want him getting pancreatitis.

I couldn’t get him to stay still for the photo, as you can see marrow bones are rather a favourite thing for Dembe.

Jay took Dembe out for a walk this afternoon on the common. They bumped into a middle aged couple , the lady was wearing a large hat. Apparently Dembe decided to freak out and the lady kindly offered to take her hat off so that Dembe wasn’t scared and could walk past her. Its very strange that he was scared of the lady’s hat as Jay and I have worn hats around him practically everyday. I couldn’t believe it when Jay came home and told me about it. What a silly sausage !

W/C 29th April 2019

Monday 29th April

As Jay was on an early we got up just after 4am and took Dembe out . It was raining and when Jay went to get Dembe out of the car he refused to move, he lay down as flat as he could to make it as difficult as possible for Jay to get him. Jay managed to get him out of the car in the end but Dembe made it very clear he wasn’t impressed by walking extremely slowly and only speeding up when he realised he was on the way back to the car. This is the first time he has ever kicked off about not wanting to go out. To be honest I can’t blame him.

I managed to find another of Dembe’s baby teeth this morning.

He was chewing his antler chew whilst sitting on my lap, as he was chewing I spied a tooth sat between his gum and his cheek. So I quickly fished it out. He wasn’t very happy as he is quite possessive over his teeth.

He has spent most of today outside in the garden destroying the few plants I have in containers. I am sure he thinks his name is “Dembe No!” He also attempted to dig a hole in the gravel by lifting up the heavy duty membrane underneath. Basically he has been a bit of a sod all day. I am beginning to wonder if maybe we have hit the teenage years already! As Dembe No used to work immediately, now he carries on whilst he thinks about it.

At 2pm he collapsed after being on the go constantly and went to sleep for two hours solid! Which meant I got to watch the latest episode of GOT without any interruptions.

Looking like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth!

Tuesday 30th April

Well a miracle happened today after being let out at 4am for the toilet Dembe slept until 7.11am. That is the latest he has ever slept as normally he is fussing from 5am for his breakfast. He has done that ever since he came home with us since January 11th. Jay and I are in shock we feel really behind all morning as after 7am is really late for us to get up currently.

Dembe got taken to Woodbury Castle for a walk and had a lovely play with a Golden Retriever. He had a really good run around and as soon as he got home he fell asleep on the sofa.

This afternoon Dembe had a play with the hosepipe, he got soaked but he does love it.

Nothing keeps him out of the water

Removing his cage has certainly reduced the humping we were having to endure. We left what we had nicknamed his sex bed in the lounge in case he “needed” it but he has only mounted it on a handful of occasions.

He has been a very good boy as he was left in the house whilst we were in the garden tidying up. As he always does he just puts himself to sleep on the sofa, we have left him for up to an hour before and never come back in to any destruction. I have probably jinxed that now.

As he attacked all my plants yesterday they have now been covered with chicken wire! He isn’t very happy about that.

Wednesday 1st May

As Jay was starting at 9am this morning we were up the common by 7am so that Dembe could have a really good run around off the lead and let off some steam as Jay won’t be back home until after 6pm. He really enjoyed his walk and he made friends with some other dogs and had a nice play. It is so nice ( but equally weird) to have a dog that gets on with other dogs. Our life before with the Weimaraners was spent trying to avoid other dogs as Frankie was nervous aggressive. Now we can go where we like at whatever time we wish because it doesn’t matter if other people are walking by with their dogs nothing bad will happen. It is hard to let go of the nerves that used to accompany dog walks though. Quite often I find myself looking around waiting to see if a dog walker is going to go on the same path as Jay. I have a few times got my phone out to ring him only then remembering he is with Dembe and he doesn’t need an advanced warning that a dog / horse / walkers are approaching.

It was really funny this morning as Jay gave me a kiss goodbye as he was leaving the house. He then said to Dembe “kiss”, well Dembe normally gives Jay a good lick when he says kiss. Today he decided to give Jay’s nose a little nibble instead, which made both of us laugh as this is what Mollie ( our Weimaraner) used to do. Mollie rarely kissed me but she always kissed Jay. She absolutely adored him and would sulk upstairs in his bedroom all day when he was at work. All our boy dogs have always been very affectionate and Dembe is no different. Willow wasn’t really a licker either but she loved both of us equally and would just spend all day going between us both for lots of cuddles.

Morning snooze

Ellie came over today she hasn’t seen Dembe for at least 6 weeks so couldn’t believe how much bigger he was. Dembe was really good and wanted to spend as much time with Ellie as he could. Her husband Paul also popped in and Dembe was determined to cover him in kisses too.

In the evening a couple swung by to pick up the land drainage pipe that I had sold to them. They brought their 7 month old Golden Retriever that was about 4 times the size of Dembe. Missy and Dembe hit it off immediately and there was lots of play bows and sniffing of bottoms. We kept hold of Missy whilst her parents loaded up their car. When they had gone Dembe sat by the front door and kept crying, he did this for ages. He wanted his new girlfriend back! In the end I had to distract him with a marrow bone.

Thursday 2nd May

Jay was late night today so he took Dembe up to the Warren and gave him a bigger and different walk than he normally would. Dembe had been like a coiled spring from waking and really needed to burn off some energy or it would have made it really difficult for me to manage him alone all day. After his walk he was pretty shattered and slept the rest of the morning.

I did a side by side comparison of Dembe at aged 8 weeks, 3 days and then 24 weeks, 6 days. It is quite shocking and it is so hard to remember him so tiny.

He is still really funny when he eats, I have never known a dog wag his tail as much as he does. Mollie would always wag her tail when drinking which always made us chuckle. Frankie would wag his tail really quickly but would barely move it and Willow would use her tail as a signally system so much more than the other two did. When you talk to Dembe as he is eating he wags his tail even faster.

Today Dembe really surprised me, I knew he had been up to something as it was so quiet. I came into the lounge and the sofa throw had been really scrunched up. As I sorted it out two pebbles from the back garden fell out. He had brought in two pebbles from the back garden and buried them in the throw. Silly hound. He has always buried stuff but it has mainly been toys hidden in his bed. This is the first time he has brought something from outside to hide in the house.

Friday 3rd May

Dembe is 25 weeks old today. I can’t believe that we have only had him since the 11th January as he is so much part of the family. He is such a happy go lucky dog. At 25 weeks he still loves to come in the shower with me although now he is much more tolerant of being dried off and no longer attacks the towel as you dry him. He loves chewing his antler chews and his raw beef marrow bones. One of his favourite toys is the small toy Sam gave him when they first met. We call it Sam’s baby, he loves the blue plastic spikey shell it came with. I think because it is a different texture in his mouth. He can now get me different toys that I ask for. He knows piggy wiggy, chewie, crocodile and toto ( the dog from my Dorothy costume).

This week we have been keeping him entertained by getting him to find a toy when we have hidden it. He loves searching through the sofa cushions and in all the nooks and crannies.

This morning on waking Dembe was manic. Once he is up he likes all of us to be up, he loves the whole pack being together. If I am the only one up he will repeatedly go upstairs and go into Jays room, licking his hands and eye lids. Today which was a first he jumped onto Jays chest, dropped his antler chew on his face and then started licking his eyelids. Normally Dembe stays on the floor, today he just leapt up on the bed. So Jay really didn’t have much choice in the matter he was getting up. As he was such a live wire we took him straight up the common for a walk.

He had a lovely play with a Labrador cross called Winston. They ran each other ragged.

He must have been having a growing day today as he was asleep for a lot of it.

All he wanted to do was curl up next to me.

He was really cuddly all day and just wanted to be wherever I was. He missed his dad today and went crazy when Jay came home at 7.20pm

Saturday 4th May

As Jay was on another early this morning we took Dembe up the common just after 4am. After today I don’t think we will bother doing early morning walks as they are obviously not his thing at all. He refused to get out of the car again, lying as flat as possible to make it hard for Jay to get him. What we will do in future on Jays early shifts is he will have a lead walk around the block on Jays lunch break. I just hope that he isn’t too manic whilst he waits for his first walk. Unless it is for his breakfast Dembe really doesn’t do early mornings.

I’ve no idea what is up with him today but he has been really whingey. As long as he is doing something he wants to do he is fine but the minute he is told no he is moaning. He got his arse in his hand with me this morning at 7am as he got told off for barking at the pigeon on my neighbours roof at 7am.

he really wasn’t impressed

And then he sits really nicely for you ans looks at you with those big brown eyes and you can’t stay cross for long. Even if he has been giving you lots of attitude since waking.

A sad day today for me and Jay as we learned that one of our first litter of puppies Isa passed away yesterday. She was Frankie and Willow’s sister and was born in 2006, our very first litter. I can’t lie I sobbed my bloody heart out. I know she was the centre of Jodie’s life and I hate the fact that she will be hurting now like we have been. I only kept in touch with a few of the people who had puppies from us. I did try to keep a relationship going with the new owners but many of them didn’t reciprocate. Jodie was among the few that always stayed in touch and I loved seeing the photographs of Isa ( called Isa as that is what the money should have been going in to) as she looked like a combination of all my Weimaraners. A sad day indeed.

Sunday 5th May

Today I woke up really poorly, my dear boy Dembe stayed by my side to ensure I was ok. Jay took him out for a walk to Woodbury Castle where he met the two lady Bulldogs and he had a play with them. Its been a few weeks since he has seen them and their owners couldn’t get over how much he had grown.

We went to a picnic / birthday party this afternoon which was a new experience for Dembe. Lots of children and footballs both of which are his most favourite things ever. Thankfully after 10 minutes of being there he calmed down considerably and behaved like an angel for the rest of the two hours we were there. He even had some off lead time chasing a ball.

As we were going back to the car we bumped into a lady with a Weimaraner called Sasha. We have met her up on the common before when we had the three Weimaraners. Dembe got a little over friendly and Sasha gave him a warning nip. No blood shed, no growling but she made it clear she wasn’t enjoying him being in her face.

After we went to the party we went up to my parents caravan – Dembe was shattered he slept all the way in the car and he really wasn’t happy when Jay woke him up to get him out. He did have a lovely time though playing with my parents Jack Russell Maggie and then meeting Wayne and Hilary who have been wanting to meet him for ages. Thankfully Dembe was on his best behaviour and did us proud.

He ( like me ) has been exhausted for the rest of the day and we are just about to toddle up the stairs for an early night. He has been snoring so loudly lying here on the sofa beside me!

W/C 22nd April 2019 Finder of lost teeth

Monday 22nd April

After the hot weather of the last two days it is much cooler today and Dembe’s activity levels have really increased. During the warmer than normal days he has been very sleepy and quite content to move as little as possible. Today he has been manic and it has made a change that Jay has got to see him like this and not just hear from me that he is bloody mental.

We were up the common by 7.30am and Dembe met up with lots of different dogs. He managed to seek out some more Labradors ( he finds dogs like him fascinating ) one of whom stole his ball and had to be bribed by Jay to get it back. He really enjoys playing with other dogs and it is really good socialisation for him. It is so strange having a dog that doesn’t see other dogs as a threat like Frankie and Willow ( our Weimaraners ) did. Mollie was always really good with other dogs. She also loved Labradors even though she was a Weimaraner and it is because of her we chose a Labrador puppy after she passed away. She had always had an affinity for them and we took it as a sign that she was giving us her blessing for when that awful day came.

Dembe has wanted lots of interaction today, he wants us both to join in playing with his toys and rolling the ball along the lounge floor.

At 5pm Sarah, Gemma and Sam came over for a catch up Sam has been at college since he last saw Dembe and obviously Dembe has grown loads since then. I am always amazed at how gentle Dembe is with Sam. Sarah (Sam and Gemma’s mum) took some lovely photo’s.

Tuesday 23rd April

Dembe is having a very Monday like Tuesday. Jay is in work when he is usually day off on a Tuesday, he is also doing his Monday hours as well so it’s not just Dembe who is confused!

Dembe has been very cuddly and sleepy today, probably because he was so manic yesterday. A lot of the time he just wants to sit on my lap and be cuddled. It’s just as well that I have no plans for today and I am quite happy to indulge him.

Snuggled up on the sofa with me.

He has managed to have a poo right outside the back door, then stand on it and bring into the kitchen with him. It is the first time he has done this and he is not impressed when I attempt to clean his paws. This has just added to the washing mountain considerably. He had a reasonably sized area to go to the toilet in so why right in front of the patio doors seemed like such a good idea I have no clue.

I’ve had the patio doors / back door open all day so that Dembe has been able to take himself out to the toilet whenever he wants to. He is getting really desperate to get beyond the patio and out into the bigger garden but with the revamp still going on it isn’t safe and he would be covered in mud within minutes.

Mark our friend popped over in the afternoon as the wheelbarrow I ordered to help shift the 3 tonnes of gravel through our house , won’t go through the patio doors despite the seller stating its dimensions it is 9cm too wide. Thankfully Mark is a blacksmith so take the wheelbarrow away for some minor cosmetic surgery. Dembe has a thing for Mark so spends the whole time trying to get his attention and rolling on his back for belly rubs.

Wednesday 24th April

Just to throw Dembe and I out a little more this week Jay is day off today. Bank holidays although nice have a lot to answer for as it will be days before I actually know what day of the week it is.

The little ball of fluff has been like the energiser bunny since waking up, so we got him out for a walk nice and early. The weather was horrendous and the boys returned to the car looking like drowned rats. The walk seems to calm Dembe down well for a little while anyway.

Dembe has been watching me like a hawk all day as I have had a really bad headache for the last two days and it shows no sign of shifting.

In the afternoon I had to admit defeat and go to bed to lie down for a bit. To my surprise Dembe came with me. Normally if I go to bed when Jay is home Dembe will stay downstairs with him. He settled down immediately and then placed his head over my left ankle just as Frankie used to do, which made me a bit emotional.

After an hour or so with heat and massage my headache was a little better and it was just as well as we needed to go to the builders merchants to pick up a a plank of wood to be used as a ramp for the wheelbarrow tomorrow. We took Dembe with us and he was such a good boy. He did get a little whingey waiting in the car and if I had a lead on me I would have let him have a wander but unfortunately Jay had taken it with him. After we collected the wood we took him out for a stroll on the common. The rain had cleared and now the sun was making an appearance.

Thursday 25th April

The garden before the revamp

We started the garden revamp back on 17th March, it was being done so that Dembe had a safe area to play as the decking we have had down for the last 15 years has rotten through and he keeps digging holes in it. We have run out of plant pots to put over the holes he has made. Once the decking and the joists were done which was done over 2 Sundays we were left with what we affectionately called the mud bath and Dembe for his own safety was banned from this area.

Dembe was confined to a small patio area until the garden was completed

Before Dembe can get back into the garden 3 tonnes (or near enough) of gravel have to be moved from our front garden, through the house and into the back garden. The joys of a mid-terrace house with no rear access. Mark ( a bloody hero ) is doing this for us as Jay has torn a muscle in his back from removing the decking and joists and then transporting that to the tip. He has estimated it will take him 45 minutes a bag, I think he is crazy!

I have to say considering Dembe has no floor space to move around on as all the lounge furniture and all the kitchen furniture has been move to the right-hand-side so that Mark has a clear run with the wheelbarrow. I keep Dembe busy for the first 90 minutes with a raw frozen beef marrow bone. It was just the last 45 minutes ( the last bag ) that he got a bit whingey and wanted to see what Mark was doing all the time. He didn’t want to be confined to the sofas whilst there was a person walking past him all the time. He is a crazy Labrador pup after all and he can’t stay still when he is awake.

When all the gravel was down I let Dembe have a run around on it,

He still needed to be careful as there was no fence at the back of the garden still as we were waiting for the fence post shoes to be delivered – which they were mid-morning. Dembe was going absolutely crazy, he was running in and out of the house and then the full length of the garden. At one point I closed the patio door to stop him as I was worried he was going to hurt himself and the chump ran straight into the closed door. He was out of it for a few seconds not knocked out but very dazed. I checked him over because I was in a complete panic and thinking what an idiot I had been for shutting the door when he was in such a frenzied state of excitement. Within a few minutes he was moving around normally but he was a little subdued, probably because he had a bit of a headache. I don’t think I have ever felt so helpless or frightened.

Dembe was allowed to wander in and out of the garden all afternoon whilst Mark worked to get the fence up and install the new gate. We had painted these last weekend.

There is still lots to do but it is now safe for Dembe to play in.

Dembe was loving the freedom of having all this space to run around in.

This was the boy Thursday evening after several hours of fun in the garden

Friday 26th April

As Jay was on an early shift we took Dembe up the common at 4.45am as now he is that much older he really does need two walks a day. He could have had a lead walk but our street lights don’t come on until after 5am, it’s much more fun on the common by torchlight.

Despite having that walk he was still full of beans today. All he wanted to do was go out and play in the garden. He is back to shoving his head into all the plant pots and getting compost all over his face. Pulling apart the plants and eating old bits of feather board fencing if we can’t get to him quickly enough. In other words he is being a bit of a sod. As soon as I make him come back in he decides he wants out in the back garden, even when it is chucking it down.

Yesterday when we were moving the furniture Jay and I decided to get rid of Dembe’s crate. It is currently used once a day for him to go in when the cleaning is being done. He is never shut in it and it is an eyesore when you live in a tiny house. It just dominates the whole lounge. I thought I could put up with it for the first 18 months of Dembe’s life but I really can’t, it is ugly. So we have taken an enormous risk and brought down the Weimaraners old wicker basket bed. The minute he attempts to chew it the crate will be back. I’m not hopeful as this morning I caught him licking the F&M Hamper that is in my bedroom out of his way! That has been liberally sprayed with bitter apple spray and I have also coated the wooden bedroom furniture in it to deter the little bugger.

He is 100% ok from his run in with the patio door yesterday thank goodness.

As I was getting into bed this evening I found a tooth beside the bed. We have managed to find 4 of his baby teeth now, he has lost many more than that . Yesterday we found one under the sofa as it was moved for Mark. It looked like a popcorn kernel as did the one I found on the floor of my bedroom this morning!

He is 24 weeks old today!

Saturday 27th April

Jay is late night tonight so Dembe has had a nice walk on the common this morning, unusually despite there being lots of cars in the car park he didn’t bump in to anyone at all.

Back of the car on his way home from the walk

He was a little bugger during the night as he woke me up at 3am trying it on for his breakfast. He was most disgusted when he was turned out into the garden and he only got a small treat for having a huge wee. He sat waiting for his food but I went back to bed. He very slowly ascended the stairs shooting me dirty looks all the way. He needn’t have worried as Jay ….the weakest link woke up at 4am and gave Dembe his breakfast. I have had to have a word with Jay and lay down the law that the boy doesn’t get fed before 5am on any day of the week. I am not having another night of being woken at 3am because Dembe decides he would like his breakfast. Message is received, lets just see if he manages to do as I have asked. He will in the long run as a sleep deprived wife isn’t fun for him.

Back of the car on way back from his walk

Early this afternoon the stepping stones we have ordered for the garden arrived. We wanted the gravel broken up a little by having some nice stepping stones that will add another layer of interest. Dembe was delighted that there was something else to have a sniff of!

He has been a very tired boy since his dad has gone to work. I hope it stays that way as I am shattered after Thursday. I know I didn’t do anything physically for the garden but the added stimulation has exhausted me. For those of you just joining the blog now I have a blog all about me and my chronic health conditions at http://www.themyastheniakid,com.

Something that is quite strange since the crate has been removed Dembe has stopped humping all the time. In his crate he used to gather up his bed to his nether regions and hump until it was all hanging out…quite literally a lot, lot more than a lipstick. The bed that was inside his crate is still in the lounge but doesn’t seem to hold the same attraction for him. He also hasn’t tried humping anything else either which I thought he may do once his usual method had been removed. Lets hope it continues as it was quite frankly a bit gross and on more than one occasion I have been worried that it wouldn’t go back in!

Another thing we have noticed since we removed the crate is that he is playing a lot more. The toys that used to be taken into the sex den are now being played with all over the house and garden. Just have to scrub the no humping thing as he has just tried to do his bed that was in the crate but as it is moving around he didn’t get the result he sought.

Sunday 28th April

I woke up at 3am to find the little rascal wide awake and doing his noisy yawns to make me stir so I got Jay to take him downstairs for a wee and a poo. I told Jay that there was to be no breakfast. Dembe wasn’t impressed and was slow to come back up to bed. Despite my back killing me I stayed in bed until 5am and then got his lordship his breakfast. He had another trip outside for the toilet and then raced back upstairs to bed. The little dumpling let me sleep until 7am!! Unheard of lately and mummy doesn’t feel so very wrecked this morning.

The lie on though seems to have supercharged him and he was throwing his antler chew around and generally being the energiser bunny so at 7.30am we both got dressed and took him up the common. Jay said he played with every dog he came across so should be exhausted. The little bugger hasn’t slept more than 10 minutes all morning!

We have had two lots of visitors and that hasn’t put a dent in his energy levels. Whilst my parents were here he managed to knock a pint glass of water twice by throwing his kong crocodile softy in the air. Finally at 12.30pm he closed his eyes and went to sleep. I got this photo of our little rascal just before he dropped off.

He was much more subdued for the rest of the day, thank goodness.

W/C 15th April

Monday 15th April

Another cuddly Monday morning with Dembe. Training wise this week the plans are to focus on getting him to got to his crate when “in your crate” is used and onto his bed when the phrase “bed” is used. It is slow going as he gets confused between the commands but it is great brain training for him. I am adding in some stuff that is mentally stimulating for him as this will keep him from getting bored and then possibly destructive.

We have a raft of visitors popping in today Julie, who saw him a few weeks ago is coming by to have a look at him and then Leanne and her son Liam are coming along also.

Dembe is very good at waiting when the front door is open and not trying to bolt out the front door. Something that the Weimaraners were terrible at and we would have to pop them in the kitchen when we answered the front door.

Julie couldn’t get over how much he had grown. On the whole Dembe is very well behaved but he has started putting his front paws on your shoulders ( from behind when you are sat down) when he has a toy in his mouth and wants you to play. It is over bearing and not very polite. Julie is ok with it apparently her late Izzie used to do it. Inside I am dying of embarrassment.

When Liam and Leanne arrive Dembe get’s over excited so I have to put him on a time out in the kitchen . When he has sat down and is calmer I allow him back into the room. He is much naughtier with Leanne and Liam here and he climbs all over Leanne. I am mortified and now stopping that behaviour is top of this weeks training list. To be honest I am also very fed up with being used as a climbing frame.

Monday 15th April He looks so angelic when he is asleep!

Tuesday 16th April

As Jay is day off today we take Dembe up to the common quite early for a nice walk. The weather is hideous so both my boys come back to the car looking like drowned rats.

Late morning we go and visit Sandra who has broken her leg in two places just yesterday. I am terrified the whole time that Dembe will clumsily bash into her temporary plaster cast but he gives it a sniff and is then very careful around her leg. The last time we were at Sandra’s house he was just 15 weeks old. He does behave mostly however he nips Sandra twice. Again I am mortified as he hasn’t nipped anyone for weeks. It is a little bite and doesn’t draw blood and was done whilst playing but I am still gutted that he has done this. I think he went to mouth her hand but she pulled away – which I have done myself and that does hurt.

It’s not all bad news though as Dembe has had his first experience of an open fire at Sandra’s and was sensible enough to keep well clear! He was very intrigued by Sandra’s husband and was watching him intently as he sorted out the fire.

Dembe slept most of the afternoon as he didn’t have a morning nap with us going To Sandra’s.  At 3pm we take him for another walk, thankfully the weather has improved. There are lots of puddles but he is still at an age where he is avoiding puddles. He reminds us of Princess Willow one of our Weimaraners who steadfastly refused to get her feet wet until she was around a year old. She expected to be picked up and carried over puddles if she couldn’t walk around them.

He is very into Jay today which is lovely to see.

Wednesday 17th April

As it quite usual for a Wednesday Jay is late night so Dembe ha had a nice walk on the common this morning at Woodbury Castle. Today he met a huge Yellow Labrador that he was desperate to play with. This Labrador we think was from show lines as it was slightly larger than our biggest Weimaraner Frankie ( who was large for a Weim) . He was very muscular this Labrador and a huge head. He made Dembe look very sweet and dainty. Working lines are bred to be smaller and more compact.

Dembe’s frozen bones have arrived today , the delivery driver was looking for a dog when I opened the front door. He stuck his head in to see Dembe just lying on the sofa waiting patiently as I had asked him to do. The guy said how lovely he was and very cute. Dembe had kittens when he saw me load all the bones into the freezer. I let him have one for 30 minutes as I knew he had another back tooth loose and that it was bothering him. He loved it and was very annoyed when I put it back in the fridge.

Thursday 18th April

As Jay was working a 12 hour shift today we got up very early so that Dembe could have a walk before Jay went to work. For Dembe it was his first walk in the dark on Woodbury common. He was freaked out a bit by his shadow initially but was soon pottering around like it was a normal day time walk.

He was pretty shattered in the morning due to the incredibly early start I managed to capture this series of photos as he dropped off to sleep.

He was out for the count.

My friend Heather popped over today, who we haven’t seen in a while due to the usual things work, family etc. I think the last time she had seen Dembe was when he was 9 weeks old and he is now 22 weeks old. 23 weeks old tomorrow. He spent the whole of Heather’s visit sat on her lap, getting her to hold his bone so that he could chomp on it. He has never sat like that on anyone other than me and Jay.So it was really nice to see.

Dembe is doing much better with the not jumping on people and wanting them to play. He has been told no and then placed on the floor. We have only had to do it twice and the jumping stopped. Hopefully that is the end of it… for now.

The poor baby still has a very wobbly back tooth and when he has been chewing his toys he has been bleeding onto them. He is ok in himself but you can tell the tooth is bothering him as he keeps flicking it with his tongue to try and dislodge it.

Good Friday – 19th April

Today Dembe is 23 weeks old how the time has flown by. He is still our little baby, when you see him next to a full grown Labrador he is still tiny. He is quite tall and when he jumps up, which isn’t very often his paws are at my waist height and I am 5ft 8in tall. He is very long as well now.

His food portions are remaining the same this week as we wean him off his lunchtime meal and down to just two meals a day. Breakfast and Dinner are 120g of food whilst lunch has been reduced to 55g, plus he has 10g of food in his frozen kong every day.

He still comes into the shower everyday and loves nothing better than playing with the hosepipe outside. He still sits on my lap every morning and chews the ties of my snuggle top as he did when he was just 8 weeks old. Although now he takes up the whole of my lap.

He has such a sunny disposition he is always happy, his tail wags constantly which always make Jay and I laugh as we aren’t used to dogs with a full size tail. He is very loving towards Jay and I but when he is out on his walk he is growing in confidence and will walk further away from Jay than he did when he was first out walking.

Today I managed to find Dembe’s wobbly tooth. He was sat beside me on the sofa and was desperately trying to dig something out from behind the sofa cushion. I put my hand in the gap and felt something which I thought was a biscuit crumb. It wasn’t until I looked at it that I realised that it was his wobbly back tooth! I am so pleased as we hadn’t been able to get any of his other teeth as they have either been swallowed or hoovered up.

Dembe had two nice walks today and Jay managed to get some lovely photos of him.

Saturday 20th April

The weather has got very hot and poor Dembe with his double layered coat is not enjoying it. Once the garden has been revamped we will be getting him a paddling pool.

The little bugger woke me up at 5.30am this morning by throwing his head across my neck. However at 6.30am as he was fast asleep on the sofa and I was struggling to stay awake so I went back up to bed taking him with me. He played for around 10 minutes and then went straight to sleep. This is the first time we have done this so it was nice to know he would settle back down again. We both got another hour of sleep.

Mark came over to work on the garden digging trenches for the french drains. Dembe loves Mark and goes all silly whenever he is here. I had to spend a lot of the time getting Dembe to leave him alone so that he can crack on with the task in hand.

Thank goodness for the marrow bones as that is enough to distract him from his bromance!

Sunday 21st April  Easter Sunday

As the last few days have been so warm Dembe was up the common this morning nice an early whilst it was still cool. I heard the Cuckoo, which I haven’t heard in years due to the Weims being walked so early in the morning. I always manage to hear the Cuckoo between the 19th and 21st April. He was calling away.

Easter Sunday on way to walk20190421_074842

Dembe has pretty much slept ever since his walk this morning.

The rest of the day was spent pretty quietly as Dembe wore himself out yesterday flirting with Mark all afternoon!

W/C Monday 8th April 2019 Teething

Monday 8th April

I love our Mondays together as Dembe is so cuddly. I spent ages this morning with Dembe lying on my chest, whilst I was lying on the sofa.

Poor mite is really teething badly at the moment. I keep finding spots of blood on his toys. He is really enjoying having a frozen carrot to chomp on. I just get Jamie to buy a bag of carrots and then they are washed and put in the freezer whole.

Monday frozen carrot

I made a massive parenting fail today, the new bag of dog food arrived today and as Jay is really struggling with a bad back at the moment , I thought I would get the bag out of the cardboard box for him. I then managed to drop the bag which then tore and Dembe was at the food like the kids game Hungry Hippos. The faster I tried to pick it up, the faster Dembe gobbled it up. Dembe thought that all his Christmases had come at once with all this food lying around.  It really opened my eyes to how greedy our boy can be / is. We have never seen him in that kind of situation before.  At least I was laughing at how quickly he gobbled up the food.

In the afternoon a lady I used to work with popped over and met Dembe. He was very well behaved, giving her kisses and being very gentle. It’s always a relief when he behaves as he can be a little full on at times just due to being a puppy.

He slept the rest of the afternoon – what a surprise and had a nice walk with Jay on the common in the evening.

Tuesday 9th April

As Jay was day off today we took Dembe up to Woodbury Common for a good run around early this morning. I waited in the car whilst Jay did a circuit of the old walk he used to take the Weimaraner’s on.

In the afternoon I had a physio appointment so Jay took Dembe out for a walk on the common again so he wouldn’t be cooped up inside the physio centre for too long. He took him to Woodbury Castle so that he would meet other dogs and keep being sociable with them. Dembe met a Vizla and had a play with him. He also met some Labradors and enjoyed having a run around with them.

My physio Jane gave me some more cardboard tubes for Dembe to have a chew on. He loves the tough cardboard tubes. When he was little the tube would last a week, now we are lucky if it makes through a couple of hours. Dembe was very restless at the physio centre and started crying so Jay had to take him outside so he didn’t annoy the patients and staff. It is the first time he has ever had to do that which is a shame. He wasn’t asked to leave he left before it came to that.

cardboard tubes are great to chew

Dembe was shattered for the rest of the day .

Wednesday 10th April

Dembe was a really good boy today just behaving himself and not going bonkers. It is obvious his teeth are really bothering as he is mouthing my hand quite a bit and is really chomping on his toys. He is enjoying his frozen carrots and the bone he was given last week.

He is doing really well with the smaller lunches, whilst we start phasing out lunch over the next few weeks. I have found him a few times looking in the kitchen at the dog food storage bin and trying to work out how to open it. His lunch portion will go down again on Friday.

I tried to tempt Dembe with a raw egg when Jay came home for lunch. With the egg whole Dembe lay on the floor in front of it ( it was in a bowl) and just barked at it! He had no clue what to do with it. I then gave it a quick whip with a fork and he still wasn’t interested. All our dogs have loved eggs but he had no interest in it at all.

He had a lovely walk this evening and bumped into a Springer Spaniel puppy called Millie. They were chasing each other all over the place and having a wonderful time. She was just a few weeks older and very fast. Dembe was so shattered after playing with Millie that he was out like a light at 8pm. Tonight we are trying to see if we can stop the 10.30pm night time wee.

Dembe went from 8pm until 4am, he only woke up as Jay went to the bathroom. Its the first time in years that either of us has had a night of uninterrupted sleep. Dembe was still sound asleep until he heard Jay put the bathroom light on. He still barks at Jay if he hears him move around at night. Thankfully its just one quick bark as soon as I tell him it’s ok it is just Daddy he stops and settles back down again.

Jay is off work as his back is very painful and isn’t settling, so Dembe had a walk up the common this morning. He seemed to sense Jay’s back was bad as he jumped into the car himself instead of Jay having to lift him. We have quite a high up car so it is too much for a little pup to jump…. or so we thought! He had a lovely run around on the common.

I have weighed Dembe today and he is 2st 8lbs which is probably around 16kg or so. He is so tall, when he jumps his feet are above my waist ( I am 5ft 8in tall so not a short arse).

Dembe is very excitable today he was barking a lot. I think he found Jay being home another day was really exciting. To try and stop the barking I started on some training to distract him. I am trying to teach him the difference between his bed and his crate. He is very good with the command “in your crate” but if you say “bed” he is getting confused between going in his crate and his bed.  It is taking time but he is slowly getting there. I am trying to add some mental stimulation into his day.

Friday 12th April

Dembe is 21 weeks old today! The time is just whizzing by, I still feel like I am getting to know my baby boy. He had me worried during the week as he wouldn’t settle that night and every few minutes was moving to a different place in my bedroom to sleep, including the floor which he never does. I stayed awake for hours watching him to ensure he was ok. I am still quite anxious when it comes to his health and wellbeing.

Dembe is back to channelling Satan. He is now tall enough to remove items from our bedside cabinets. I had to rescue my nasal spray as he had swiped it and was chewing on the cardboard box. He also likes helping himself to Jays clean socks if he doesn’t put his washing away. He isn’t that keen on the dirty ones!

I was out in the kitchen when I noticed it had gone very quiet in the lounge, I came in to find Dembe stood on the coffee table picking up and dropping the remotes onto the floor! A little later in the day I found him in his crate chewing Jays Owl toy that I made him last year for fathers day from Mollie and Frankie. That got swiftly removed from him. He wasn’t impressed and barked at the toy he could see on the Irish dresser.

Its such fun having a pup on the verge of adolescence! Dembe flatly refused to have his morning nap unless I was sat beside him. I did wonder if this was a ploy and that he had realised I wasn’t well and was pushing myself. By making me sit down he was forcing me to rest rather than continue to push against it and make myself feel worse.

Dembe met Millie the Springer Spaniel again on his evening walk. Tonight was also the first time that he didn’t come back when Jay called him. He had run back into the car park with Millie. Her owners were also trying to get her back on the lead as she was having none of it either. Given her age and the fact that Dembe is an entire male I did wonder if Millie is coming into her first season and that is why the two love birds weren’t behaving. I would imagine Millie’s owners might not be aware of it however all my male dogs have expressed an interest in bitches well before their seasons had started. Sometimes even a few weeks. So maybe they will have a bit of a surprise in the next week or so?

Dembe is doing very well with no longer going out at 10.30pm, he is getting up at 4am but that has been because Jay has been on an early or I have needed the toilet. Without either of those he would probably sleep a bit longer. He has his breakfast, goes to the toilet and then goes back to bed. Jay and I even with the 4am wake up ( which last max 10 minutes) are still having more unbroken sleep than we have ever had in years.

Saturday 13th April

As Jay was on a 10-7 shift today Dembe got a lovely run around on the common this morning. It was very early so no one else was around. Jay took some video and some photos for me.

Saturday morning walk

Dembe has been in another chewy mood today. He gave me a fright this afternoon as his ball was covered in blood. He has a back tooth coming out ( baby tooth ) it is bleeding a bit more than his other teeth have purely because it is bigger. This one is bothering him every now and again, so I am keeping an eye on it. He has had two frozen carrots today and lots of games of tug and ball.

I can’t seem to go anywhere without being followed, we have nicknamed Dembe FOMO – fear of missing out.  I can’t even have pee in peace.

fomo

He has also been a bit cheeky again by going upstairs and stealing Daddy’s socks again. Unfortunately I couldn’t get great photos as he wouldn’t stop shaking his head, so these are a bit blurry.

He is the worst thief ever as he has to come and show me what he has the majority of the time.

He has finally settled down for a sleep at 17.30pm ( as I am writing up this week’s diary entries) . Jay will be taking him out again after 7pm when he gets in. So he is going to have a bit of a surprise tonight.

Sunday 14th April

We went to bed quite late last night so were hoping that Dembe would go longer during the night however he woke me up at 3am wanting the toilet. I took him downstairs as for a change I was ok on my feet ( I suffer with vertigo at night for some reason so Jay does night time toilet trips and breakfast) . He stood in the kitchen and looked at me thinking he was possibly going to con an early breakfast out of me. No such luck I called him outside and success straight off with a wee and a poo!

He would have settled straight back down had it not been for my noisy neighbours. I have no idea what they were doing but it sounded like someone with lead boots was playing a game of tag. They have laminate flooring throughout their home, during the day there is enough ambient noise to cover the sound but at night it is incredibly loud. Dembe barks if there are strange noises at night, he takes his role of protector very seriously so around 4 times after the 3am wake up call I was woken up by his warning bark due to the noise from next door. Thankfully the neighbours the other side of me were away as no doubt he would have woken them up. It is so inconsiderate, I know it’s the weekend but 3.30am on a Sunday morning is taking the proverbial.

He did manage to get to sleep in the end and woke up at 5am for his breakfast, he then came back to bed and slept for another hour or so waking at 6.45am. Which of late has been a lie in! He was full of beans from the off so by 8.30am he was having a walk up on Woodbury common.

He met many of the same dogs he met last week so thoroughly enjoyed himself bumping into the 4 Labrador’s and the two lady owners in the woods. Jay managed not to get bitten by an over enthusiastic Lab this week.

His tooth that has been causing his gum to bleed from late yesterday afternoon has finally come out. Poor little sausage was finding that one very uncomfortable. We think he finally got it out chewing a frozen carrot, which has helped him no end. As he is so into chewing at the moment I have bought him a load of frozen beef marrow bones. I hate the smell it makes me want to be sick but he really enjoys it. So they will be delivered by Wednesday next week. He won’t have more than 2 a week and they will be stored in the fridge between chomps!

I still see Dembe as a tiny little dinky dot but when I take a photo like this and can see how very tall he is, it really freaks me out and I have to admit that he really isn’t that small anymore!

look how big I am

no longer a dinky dot

He has been a very sleepy boy today after being a bit mental yesterday afternoon!

W/C 1st April 2019 – Window Watching

Monday 1st April

Dembe was as is usual on a Monday a cuddly pup all day.

Monday chewy hands

Unfortunately at around 16.45 we were messing around ( Dembe and I ) and he clobbered me with his paw. It was a freak accident but due to the fact I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome my skin is extremely fragile. Whilst most people would have got away with a scratch the underneath of my eye was cut open and was bleeding. It was a bit scary and I was just very pleased that I had managed to close my eye before it connected with his paw. As I said total freak accident but I am being very careful.

eye injury (1)

I had to spend a few hours with some ice on it as the pain was really incredible. Which sounds like I am being a wimp but it really did hurt and I have quite a high pain threshold.

eye injury

Poor Dembe got scared as I was crying out with the pain when it happened so he ran upstairs and hid in the bedroom. I followed him upstairs and gave him a big cuddle as I wasn’t cross with him, these things happen it was an accident.  He quickly settled and was much happier.

We had a quiet evening but out of the blue at 22:30 Dembe decided to throw up his dinner from 18:00. He had been asleep since around 20:00 and Jay had just taken him downstairs to have a wee, which he did and then came in and had a drink and then it was vomitsville. It is the first time he has been properly sick, poor baby. He woke me up at midnight and was sick again but it was just a couple of mouthfuls of bile. I managed to get my snuggle top underneath him so he wasn’t sick on my bed. He was then fine for the rest of the night.

Tuesday 2nd April

We got out early up the common this morning as we are waiting for B&Q to deliver our gravel and other garden bits. As Jay and Dembe got out of the car it absolutely hammered down. Thankfully as they went through the woods at Woodbury Castle they didn’t get too wet.

Tuesday walk

Tuesday walk (2)

Tuesday walk (1)

As soon as our delivery arrived Dembe wanted to watch from the lounge window, he was wagging his tail like mad as he watched his daddy and the delivery driver get all the stuff of  the lorry. It is the first time since he was a tiny pup that he has bothered to look out of the window. Now there is no stopping him he loves it.

After the delivery had been sorted we raced down to the vets as we wanted to ensure Kate the head receptionist got to see Dembe when we went to get him weighed and pick up his worming tablets. Kate couldn’t believe the size of him and had lots of cuddles. Whenever we go there she makes such a fuss of him. She weighed him for us and he came in at a whopping 15.1kg / 33lbs / 2st 5lbs. I asked if his weight was ok and if he is overweight as I am paranoid about him getting too heavy and damaging his joints but she assured me he is absolutely perfect. She couldn’t get over how tall he is, she has seen him from 8 weeks old so she knows what a tiny dinky dot he was to begin with.

So far Dembe has been fine with no more vomiting but I won’t give him his worming tablets until tomorrow so that I know that his stomach has settled.

This evening I attempted to do my pilates…

Dembe seemed to think that this was code for climb all over mummy!

Wednesday 3rd April

Dembe is barking a lot today, he is barking at noises outside the house, cars, people talking that kind of thing and also he is barking at the sound of the hail stones hitting the windows and doors.  I am trying to discourage him from doing this  as I don’t want to annoy my neighbours. It makes me laugh that so many books say that Labrador’s don’t really bark, well Dembe found his bark and now hasn’t stopped using it!

His favourite game today is running upstairs and barking – he is letting me know he has dropped a toy over the side of the bed and he wants me to get it despite the fact he is more than able to jump on and off the bed. The first couple of times when he barked upstairs I panicked wondering what the hell was wrong. Now I just ignore him and use the recall command so he comes back downstairs for a treat.

He really wasn’t impressed with the hail storms we had on and off all day. Whilst it was light hail it was fine but when it went a bit mad and the hail got quite large he ran back inside with his tail between his legs.

This evening he has had a nice walk up on the common with Jay.

Thursday 4th April

Dembe is enjoying standing on the sofa and looking out the window. This is something he discovered the joys of on Tuesday and now there is no stopping him! Sometimes he see’s something and he decides to bark and other times his tail wags furiously. He is a funny little thing who constantly has me in stitches. As I am writing up this diary entry he is snoring very loudly beside me on the sofa!

I am really struggling to complete my Pilates / Physiotherapy exercises as when I get on the floor Dembe thinks it is play time and crawls all over me. It is really funny but it has got to the point now where I will have to wait until Jay gets home so that I can complete my exercises without interruption!

Dembe is fantastic when the front door goes, where ever he is in the lounge I tell him to wait  and then repeat the command and open the front door. He stays where he is until the front door closes and he gets a treat. We have had some big bulky deliveries this week and he has been such a very good boy. It is strange that he doesn’t bark at the doorbell or people knocking at the door. My Weimaraners used to sound like the hounds of the Baskervilles when the front door went and I would have to shut them in the kitchen to stop their escape attempts. So this has completely blown my mind that I can open the door without worrying that he will bark / growl or escape.

We are still working on the lie down command and he is getting quicker every day. I am now trying to add a roll over to the end of it.

He is such a good loving boy. I have been reading some horror stories on social media in the Labrador groups I belong to. Pups destroying walls, running away and ignoring commands. Owners terrified of letting their puppies off the lead – so much so they haven’t been off a lead in a wide open space in 6 months which is a shame for the owner and awful for the pup.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that my darling boy stays this way forever as he is such a good boy.

Friday 5th April

Today is the day that we start increasing Dembe’s breakfast and dinner whilst decreasing his lunch. We are doing this very slowly over the course of the next 7 weeks as we will also be building up his total amount of food to his 6 month old pup allowance.  However if he is really protesting over no longer having lunch in a few weeks time we will reintroduce it – because he is a spoilt little boy!

This is all happening because my dinky little Dembe dot is now 5 months old / 20 weeks. We have owned him for 3 months and I really couldn’t imagine life without my little sausage / pudding / dumpling. He is so very affectionate and loved nothing more than to sit on my lap giving me lots and lots of puppy kisses.

Dembe has been really spoilt today not only has he received his first ever butchers bone but he has had a manic play time with Harry, Bev’s son. He will have to wait for the bone to defrost before he can have it but he simply adored playing today. The photos are with kind permission of Bev.

As Harry found out Dembe is very strong and loves a good game of tug of war!

Saturday 6th April

window watching

Dembe is the original nosy neighbour! he is loving standing on the sofa and watching the world go by. Our Weimaraner’s Willow and Mollie also liked to have a good look out of the window.

As Dembe’s bone had defrosted this morning I let him have it for a few hours. He was so excited he wouldn’t stop wagging his tail. Initially he just looked at it not believing that it was all for him.

20190406_095046

Dembe was very spoilt today as not only did he have a bone to chew but mummy and daddy also bought him a swanky new collar, which has plenty of room for him to grow into. You can see it ever so slightly in the top photo, it is a beautiful soft grey leather, with silver fittings. It is a wee bit loose at the moment but as we don’t attach a lead to his collar as he is on a harness it’s fine. It also has room to grow as well so should hopefully see him into adulthood. If anyone is interested it is from a company called Dogs & Horses – we paid for ours and I am not gaining anything by telling you where we purchased it from.  The soft grey looks beautiful against his red / yellow coat.

Sunday 7th April

sleepy boy (2)

Well Dembe was a bit crazy this morning so we got him up to Woodbury Castle reasonably early. What a walk he had he met five other Labradors and was in 7th heaven.  The first Labrador he met was a chocolate one called Dexter, who was elderly but still wanted to play. Dembe was too quick for Dexter but they still had a lot of fun. Further into the woods they came across two ladies sat on a fallen tree and at their feet were 3 yellow Labradors and one black one. All the dogs came bounding over which Dembe took in his stride.

Jay tells me that all the Labrador’s then sat in front of him and shoved their noses into his Travis bag containing all Dembe’s treats. Dembe was most perturbed that he couldn’t get anywhere near his daddy for all the hungry Labrador’s. Jay shouted over to the owners to ask if they minded if Jay gave them all a treat. He was told to watch his fingers and thought he knew better, he ended up with a bleeding thumb. More walking wounded than amputation needed!

Dembe was pretty shattered after his morning walk so went straight to sleep. He has been a good boy today and had plenty of cuddles and kisses. The only naughty thing he has done is he decided he was part crocodile again today and has been nipping us which he hasn’t done for ages. A few stern no’s and he caught on we weren’t putting up with it. It’s funny how he can not do something for weeks and then decides he will try his luck again.

I keep meaning to say that he is 100% house trained now and has been for weeks. He is a very good boy and will wait at the back door to be let out.

W/C 25th March 2019 – Toys, all toys

Monday 25th March

Well yesterday ( Sunday) the last of the decking and it’s joists have been removed so for the time being ( for safety ) Dembe is restricted to just the small patio in the back garden. Its going to be 6 – 8 weeks before he has a garden to play in again but so far he is coping ok. Just has got his head in every plant pot that is within biting distance.

As you can see from the garden….well mud pit it’s not a safe environment for a puppy.

current state of the garden

He was a very sleepy boy today, probably because he had so little sleep the day before with the decking being removed and Mark coming over to help. Also because he was such a good boy he had two walks up on the common as a reward hence a knackered pup today.

Monday ginger nuts

Having his ginger nuts on display seems to be his normal Monday morning sleeping pose!

better how to wear my ears todayIMG_20190325_135715_159

I managed to get this beautiful shot of Dembe today. It’s so cute his ears are always doing this.

As Jay was on an early Dembe had a nice walk on the common this evening.

Tuesday 26th March

As Jay is (as normal) day off today he took him up the common nice and early. He met up with Dembe’s girlfriends the two female British Bulldogs, who adore him but will steal his tennis ball. Dembe had a really good play with them.

We are having issues with Dembe whingeing in the car . He started doing it age 10-11 weeks and he is getting more and more vocal. Up until then he was really good in the car and used to go straight to sleep. He whinges if I am in the back with him or if I am in the front with him. We don’t know why he is doing it as he can move around despite being belted in. He isn’t in pain, it isn’t an excited whine it’s an attention whine or I need the toilet whine. But he will always have been outside for a wee before being put in the car. He also does it on the way home from a walk or trip out in the car. Which means he will have been to the toilet etc We are clueless but our new plan of action is to ignore him and see if that gets him to drop the volume of the whinging.

On the second trip out of the day the whingeing although still there was much quieter.  However he has now started barking at people outside the car. Today was the first day that he has ever done it. Probably because he is so much taller now he can see clearly out of the window. He does very much see his role as being the protector of the family. I just don’t want him barking at everything outside the car because we had that with the Weimaraner’s and its a bloody nightmare.

Wednesday 27th March

I’m usually pretty good at either writing my notes about Dembe straight into my diary for him or onto the blog in the drafts section. For some reason Wednesday is completely blank. However as a back up I always look at photos in my phone as very rarely is there a day when I haven’t taken a photo of him.

blue dinosaur (1)blue dinosaur 3

For some reason this week it has been all about his toys. The blue dinosaur in the photos was one of the first toys that I bought him. Until now it has been part of his bedroom toys. He has a few toys upstairs which he plays with for about 30 minutes every night before he settles down to sleep. He plays with these as well if we go upstairs during the day.  This week he has been slowly bringing all his upstairs toys downstairs and neither Jay or I have noticed him do it.

He has also been playing with toys that he hasn’t touched for a while. However the best game he has had is emptying the contents of his toy box all over the lounge floor. As soon as you try to tidy up and put them back in the toy box he trots behind you and takes them out again. This has been this weeks game which started on Wednesday!

Thursday 28th March

As Jay was on his only late night of the week Dembe was taken up the common for a nice walk. He had missed his two Bulldog girlfriends but he met two chocolate labs who were more than happy to play with him. He really is fascinated with Labrador’s, he likes any dog that will play with him but he knows a Labrador. The whole reason we went for a Labrador after losing the Weimaraner was that our eldest girl Mollie had always been fascinated with Labrador’s, particularly black Labs. She would make a bee line to a Lab, flirting and playing. So we allowed Mollie to make the decision for us, years ago so it feels like we have her blessing. Even though it is bloody hard trying to carry on without them.

Dembe has claimed his first pair of slippers. Jay had a pair of star wars slippers that he wore occasionally . Dembe would steal them out of Jays bedroom no matter where he hid them and sit and chomp on them. Tonight Dembe managed to chew the ends off both toes so I had to get them off him and put them in the bin. I didn’t want him eating the inside of the slipper!

My dad popped over in the afternoon to pick up some of the things he has been storing at ours over the winter. Dembe was very excited as it was around 4pm, from 4pm until 4.30pm / 5pm he can be very bouncy and today was no different. He was mad though bouncing around like a rabbit!

He did however settle really well in the evening and we went upstairs at 18.30 as we were both shattered.

sleepy boy Thurs

It was quite funny as when Jay got home from work Dembe barked at the sound of him coming through the door. Like I said earlier in the week he takes his role of being our protector very seriously.

Friday 29th March

I can’t believe our little ball of fluff is 19 weeks old already, where the hell has the time gone? I am so glad I have all the photos of him at 8 weeks old when he was tiny, standing in his food bowl. He has grown so much in such a short space of time.

19 weeks

19 weeks

He is such a gorgeous boy and I love him so much. I don’t even mind that I am permanently covered in dog hair because he is moulting at the moment as his adult coat comes in.

He has another two wobbly teeth on the bottom next to his canines. He has so many adult teeth come through now it is no wonder his favourite thing to do at the moment is chew. His Antler chews have taken a real bashing.

Jay was on a middle shift today so Dembe had a walk around the block this morning to burn off some energy. He came across an adult Labrador that was out on a run with its owners. He was absolutely fascinated by the grown up Labrador, sadly it was on the other side of the road but he was transfixed until it passed by.

He has been very cuddly all week, he keeps wanting on my lap and being hugged. He is such a very soppy boy.

Tonight was the first time he had been up to my parents caravan. He met Maggie last week but it went much better outside at the van. Although despite just having  a walk Dembe was manic with excitement. Bouncing around all over the place and getting deeply frustrated at the fact that my parents dog a Jack Russell terrier wouldn’t play with him and was more into being petted by myself and Jay.

As soon as we got in the car to go home Dembe was out like a light. It made for a very quiet evening!

Saturday 30th March

Today it seems my primary role is ensuring his lordship gets fed and to hold onto his nyla bone / antler / tugger whilst he chews the hell out of it. He obviously has some teeth coming through at the back as everything is being rammed to the back of his mouth and being chomped on.

nyla bone

chewing

Saturday evening after Jay got home from work and Dembe had a walk we went over to my parents caravan. Dembe was much more confident this evening as he knew where he was. He and my parents dog Maggie were playing, running after the ball and chasing each other. Dembe had the time of his life and we had a very quiet evening!

Sunday 31st March

Well after running riot with Maggie today Dembe is absolutely shattered. Firstly he slept until gone 6am ( the clocks changed last night so in old money it was 5.10am)  and then after he had his breakfast he then slept until 8am ( 7am ) which for him is pretty good going. He was a bit active for about an hour and then flaked out again.

Jay took him out for a walk on the common at around 10am

happy mothers day

He has been sleeping beside me all day . In the UK it is Mothers day today, I have had a lovely card and box of chocolates from my boy. He is such a gorgeous pup and loves his mum.

gorgeousboy

He has been very good as I was outside with Jay this morning pointing out what pots can be thrown away and what still had plants in. We had to shut him in the house whilst doing this as there was no barrier onto the quagmire which is the back garden currently! Whenever we leave him in the house alone ( when we are in the garden) he just puts himself on one of the sofas and goes to sleep. I always panic he will be chewing something but he hasn’t yet…..he is still only 5 months old and there is lots of chewing to come I am sure.

As Jay isn’t working today he has had another walk on the common this afternoon. He has come in had a drink and then gone straight back to sleep. Must be a growing day combined with too much fun yesterday, He has been so tired hardly any toys have been touched today as well.

w/c 18th March 2019

Monday 18th March

This week has been really hard, absolutely nothing to do with Dembe, he as always is my boy and an angel. Its me, I had a medication dose altered and I’m away with the fairies or trying to function through thick fog all the time. So this weeks dairy entries are going to be a bit scarce.

For the first day since he came home with us I forgot to take a photo of him, which proves how bad it has been. He has been well looked after and as always is my number one priority. It’s just well the dosage was too much and now I have dropped back to what I was on before.

We had a lovely day together and he has been very cuddly and following everywhere, which shows he has picked up on the fact that I wasn’t right bless him.

Tuesday 19th March

As Jay was day off today and we had several things planned Dembe was taken for a walk on the common at around 8am. He is looking so big in the back of the car these days it is scary. He still seems so small to us.

back of car

Before they left for their walk I asked Jay to take some photos for the blog. Due to my mobility issues I can’t go out with Dembe unless it is somewhere there is pavement. I do have an off-road trike attachment but due to the issue of the trapped nerve in my neck I am not using it at present. Jay took some cracking photos.

on the walk

on the walk

on the walk (1)

He loves to either carry the ball around during his walk or he likes it being thrown for him. Mollie used to love having a ball thrown for her but she is nowhere in the same league as Dembe for a ball obsession,

Jay spent the next few hours getting rid of the old wood from the back garden which meant Dembe had to be in his crate for a bit as we live in a terraced house with no rear access so everything has to come through the house. A nightmare if you have pets or small children. Dembe was an absolute angel and patiently waited until Jay had cleared up all the mess before he was let out. He then had some fun as I was getting my hair done, it was the first time I had a full set of foils on my head for highlights so his face was a picture looking at me wondering what on earth I was doing. He was pretty good around the hair only taking a few curls and running off with them.

As he had been such a patient boy all day with so much going on and had behaved himself when Rachel my hairdresser was here he got rewarded with another walk up on the common. When we got home we looked in our post box and found that Dembe’s coat for when he is a bit bigger had arrived. I’m not sure what he thinks about it?

Tues my new coatWe also have a cover for his lead that says in training. We are getting the basics down. Our next major challenge is to get him to walk alongside the mobility scooter without him trying to jump on me all the time. He walks like a dream for Jay but as soon as I am in the picture he just wants to be with me. So we are going to find a local car park and for the next few Sundays in the early mornings try repeatedly getting him to walk alongside me. It maybe that we have to think of a super dooper new treat for daddy to carry whilst we do this so his attention stays on Jay and not me.

Wednesday 20th March

I have no clue where this week is going! Dembe’s new adult teeth are almost fully formed and look quite strange against his baby teeth that he still has. He has been an angel all day again. There have been things that I needed to get done and he has just put himself on his bed and gone to sleep. He hasn’t got himself into any mischief, I am sure that will happen by the bucketful in the future! I thank my lucky stars that I have such a lovely boy, especially when I read the horror stories on some of the Labrador social media groups ( not our Broadleaf one ). I do wonder though if these people thought properly about getting a dog before taking the plunge, some of the things they complain about have me in shock, they are expecting way too much from a 9 week old puppy.

As we were up early this morning 5.30am for me, my nose was being gently chewed and 6.30am for hubby we got Dembe up on the common for a good run by 7.30am. It has set us up nicely for the day as he has been asleep for a lot of it and none of his usual antics of constantly wanting his ball thrown. I think all the excitement of yesterday as well has probably worn him out.

He has been my little helper today, picking things up for me when I have dropped them – and not running off with them but giving them back to me. Nothing that we have been working on this is his natural behaviour. Very good when I dropped a load of socks on the floor when emptying the tumble dryer.

Here he is lying on the bed

my little helper

He really loves stealing his dads star wars slippers. It doesn’t seem to matter where Jay hides them in his bedroom Dembe finds them and brings them into my room. He also has in his mouth his comforter that he brought home from the breeder. It’s never been washed and I had to do a slight repair job on the arm of the teddy as it had torn, he still plays with this everyday. We keep it upstairs in my room so he has it there at night.

He has been out in what we have left of the garden which is the patio and a small amount of decking as we are having a garden make over at the moment. Which is being done on Jays days off. It will be a long project, but when it is done we won’t have to do anything to it again other than weeding! Plus it will be so much safer for Dembe to run around on. The decking as soon as it is wet is lethal and I was constantly terrified he was going to hurt himself

Thursday 21st March

As Jay was on a late night Dembe was up for a walk on the common by 9am. He loves his walks up there as he gets to meet other dogs and have a play. Today he met a very elderly black lady Labrador who was very patient with him as he bounced around and tried to get her to join in and play with her, He also met a horse properly today.

Jay and Dembe have bumped into this rider a few times, she has been watching Dembe grow up. Today they met properly and she got the horse to stand very still whilst Jay lifted Dembe up and let him have a look at the horse properly. He then put him on the floor and let him walk to the side of the horse. The horse snorted and Dembe had a bit of a jump as it startled him. He was very well-behaved as normally when he gets frustrated or wants something or is frightened he will bark. ( I still haven’t got him over his fear of the printer, every time a printed page drops to the collection tray he barks and then runs away! It is the strangest thing to be frightened of). He was shattered by the time he got hoe and slept the rest of the morning.

sleeping on the sofa

Dembe  has got much better at entertaining himself if I am doing something where my attention can’t be solely on him. Most of the time he will get up on the sofa and go to sleep or put himself on his bed. I have been lucky that he hasn’t got into mischief so far. I check on him regularly to ensure he isn’t chewing or destroying something but he has been very good. He reminds me of our first dog Travis who was a good boy when we couldn’t give him our undivided attention because we were doing jobs around the house. We could trust him not to destroy things, he was just happy we were in the house with him.

As we were by ourselves this evening we were up in bed by 7.15pm. Dembe settled really quickly and only woke when Jay got home shortly after 9pm. As soon as I felt Dembe sit up I said to him it was daddy, so he didn’t bark. He got off the bed and waited patiently by the baby gate until his daddy came upstairs. He goes mental when Jay gets home and showers him with kisses.

Friday 22nd March

Dembe had us up at the crack of bloody dawn! From 3.15am he was trying it on for his breakfast. He eventually had it at 4.30am as Jay was on an early shift, he then did his business in the garden and came back to bed. I ended up getting up at 5am as my back was sore. This lazy lump then decided to sleep for the majority of the morning! If only us humans could get away with that.

I just have one question though how does something so cute and small snore like a warthog?

When he isn’t next to me on the sofa sleeping he goes on the sofa opposite me so he can keep an eye on me. He is quite a guard dog, any strange noise outside the house he will bark. The other night Jay got up for a wee and Dembe barked at him as normally Jay doesn’t get up at night. He really does see his job as protecting both Jay and I.

sleeping

When Dembe was more awake in the afternoon we started back on the “lie down” command. We started it over a week ago and due to me feeling rough and not very with it I didn’t go back and revisit it. I was so surprised that he remembered what I wanted him to do. Ok so he isn’t lying down immediately but he is getting it and considering this was our second session I was impressed. Lie down is quite submissive for a dog and many of them will flatly refuse to do this. I did have Frankie and Willow trained to lie down but Travis and Mollie would never do it!

I weighed Dembe today and found out he now weighs 14.5kg / 32lbs / 2st 4lbs at 18 weeks old, he is roughly supposed to gain 2lb a week at this stage so I can stop panicking that he is overweight. He certainly doesn’t look fat, you can feel his ribs and see then when he turns a certain way. I can also feel his spine and pelvis without having to rummage around. Plus his waist does go in. With him being a Labrador I panic constantly in case he becomes chubby.  He doesn’t half try it on now though, he is forever sitting in front of the fridge waiting to see if any cocktail sausages fall out!

Saturday 23rd March

As Jay was on a late night Dembe got a nice walk up at Woodbury Castle this morning. Jay took this video so I could share it with you. Dembe loves exploring in the woods and as you can see after chasing after a ball, carrying the ball is his next favourite thing!

Dembe had a wonderful time playing with a Collie cross called Sookie. However Sookie ( like all dogs tend to do at some point)  decided to have selective hearing when her dad was shouting at her to come back. She was having far too much fun playing kiss chase with Dembe. Jay wasn’t bothered as running around playing is as good as a walk. In the end though Jay had to call Dembe back to him – and he came back first time, the miracle that is a bag full of bits of cocktail sausages. Jay then stayed put until Sookie’s owner came and collected her. She wasn’t impressed but her dad was exasperated with her. Jay couldn’t wait to tell me when he got back to the car about how good Dembe had been coming back with his recall. I am sure when he hits his teenage years he will decide to be a plonker and develop selective hearing. We are just very lucky that we have concentrated on this from day one. I could always call Mollie and Travis back however Frankie and Willow had selective hearing. I know how scary that is so I wanted to ensure we didn’t have that fear with Dembe.

After his escapades on his walk he has been a pretty tired pup bless him. We have had a couple of play sessions to burn off any energy and we have continued to work on lie down which he is getting faster at responding to.

One thing I really do love about Dembe is he loves getting mummy cuddles as much as I love giving them to him. He really is the soppiest dog I have ever owned and Frankie was a very loving boy.

Sunday 24th March

Sunday the day of rest, that’s a laugh in our house with the garden being revamped. BY 11am this morning the remaining decking and joists had been removed and are sat on the sliver of front garden that we have running alongside the drive. Dembe was a good boy as he had to stay in his crate for quite a while, whilst the wood was taken through the house and then whilst the mud was cleaned up. We are very lucky that he really doesn’t kick off much at all when he is put in his crate.

As we knew he would have to be in his crate for a period of time today we took him out on Woodbury Common at 8am. He met two female Bulldog puppies, who loved playing with them. He also met two elderly chocolate Labrador’s who were very placid when faced with a bouncing pup and had they been a few years younger would have had a play. It is really nice now that Jay can take Dembe anywhere and not have to worry about running into other dogs. The Weimaraners were not good with other dogs, particularly Frankie who was nervous aggressive. This always caused us so much stress, now we have the freedom to choose where we go.

Dembe had been such a good boy this morning that once all the garden work had finished and Jay had some lunch he was taken out again for another run around. This time we went to another part of the common. This time he bumped into three horses, thankfully after meeting the horse earlier in the week he knew to sit close to Jay whilst they passed. All these things are excellent experiences for a little pup.

He has slept the remainder of the day bless him.
