Dembe is booked in for a walk with Martin from Happy dogs this morning as Jay is on an early. The day started really sunny so I was hopeful that they would have a dry walk as it has been really awful the weather of late. Whilst Dembe and Martin were out we had some heavy showers and some hail. Miraculously they managed to avoid the showers and I had a very dry Dembe returned to me.
Dembe made a new friend Lilly, Martin joked that she made a good Shadow substitute for Dembe as he does like the girls!
I had got all prepared for a wet dog, Dembe was more than happy to have his post walk nap on the towel I had laid out ready for him!
Jay popped back for lunch and walked him around the block. He was very settled in the afternoon so that let me do some prep work for some sewing. At 3pm Dembe came into the kitchen demanding his dinner which is incredibly early but as he was asking I let him!
Dembe has to have someone in the room with him when he eats or he will walk away from the food no matter how hungry he is. He has had this little quirk since he was a tiny pup.
He was very impatient for his dad to get home this afternoon and spent ages at the window watching the world go by and checking if it was his dad or not.
Tuesday 25th May
Dembe woke up at around 5.30am for his walk this morning, Jay took him around the block and then they both came back to bed and went to sleep. He started crying at 7.30am for his breakfast so I got Jay and we all went downstairs together. He has been demanding his food earlier than normal at the moment, which is unusual especially as a few weeks ago we had meals left as he didn’t want to eat them. He polished off a huge breakfast in record time!
He is being an angel with having his eye drops put in. He is such a good boy that he lets me do it by myself if I need to because Jay is at work. The Weims would have put up such a fight it would have taken an army of people to do it! His eyes are clearing up beautifully, bless him he must have been hurting and we didn’t know.
Today has been a Carrot day today, he has taken it everywhere. He has a habit of running up the stairs of he thinks we are going to do something he doesn’t like – for example clean his ears, clip his dew claws etc. For some reason today he decided to run upstairs!
He thinks we can’t see him because he is behind the banister! Numpty.
Wednesday 26th May
Today’s the day the boys are reunited, Polo will be on the walk with Dembe and they can resume their bromance.
As is usual Dembe had 3 walks before Jay left for work around midday. Dembe was picked up later this afternoon so whilst we were waiting, I gave Dembe a groom much to his digust. He is moulting an incredible amount at the moment. I used a zoom groom and a furminator on him and must have got enough off to stuff a 14 inch cushion pad!
Dembe spent most of the afternoon asleep either inside the house or out in the garden.
Friday 28th May
Jay was on an early shift, Dembe was asleep in my room for a change as normally he will go in and sleep on Jays bed. When Dembe and I came downstairs we saw that Jay had left this for us.
Martin had told me the day before that Dembe would be picked up early for his walk as he had lots to do today. That is fine with us as it means Dembe doesn’t have to wait hours between walks. Dembe started barking at the window at 8.30am by the way his tail was going I knew it was Martin from Happy Dogs.
When Dembe came home as he was coming into the house I could see what looked like a Tick trying to get under Dembe’s collar. Luckily with his light coloured fur they are easy to spot when they are the small black ones. I freaked out a little and managed to catch it before it buried his head into Dembe’s skin. I have never known a year for so many ticks. We have had two in the house already most years there is 2 all year. So Jay has organised picking up Dembe’s over due tick treatment this evening.
I managed to make these two this morning
Dembe heard me as I put the squeakers into the Carrots and came running out of the lounge and wanted me to give him one of the carrots. I have made these for my nephews Cocker Spaniel Dusty and my friends sisters dog Bertie. They will both love them and there are two squeakers in each one. Dembe absolutely adores his full sized carrot. I am so glad that I have been able to make a replacement for him now they are no longer sold by Pets at Home.
Dembe has been chilling out this afternoon between barking at the carpenters working on next doors porch. I am updating his diary earlier than usual as on Sunday we are going to Jays mum’s house. Jays family will be scattering his dads ashes up on the beacon and Jay is taking Dembe with him for a nice long walk. I am staying at his mums house as the path isn’t disability friendly and is too much for me to manage. I used to walk this track twenty odd years ago before I got sick.
Dembe has a walk booked in with Martin this morning.
Whilst we were waiting fro him to arrive, Dembe was giving the builders out in the street a piece of his mind as they have been making a racket for the last few days. It has upset Dembe no end having all the lorries and all the people shouting / drilling and generally making a nuisance of themselves.
Dembe had a lovely walk with Martin this morning, he was with his older woman Shadow, who he has a huge soft spot for.
Jay popped home at lunch time and gave De,be a quick walk around the block to ensure he would be ok until he got back later.
Dembe was knackered after his walk on the common with Martin and was more than happy to curl up on the sofa and doze until his dad got home at 4pm.
When Jay got home from work we took Dembe up to the model airfield for a walk. Dembe and Jay bumped into a female Hungarian Vizla that was in season ( I can’t believe that someone would be stupid enough to take a bitch in season out during a busy time of day when she was in season). This was a first for our boy and although he was incredibly intrigued by this foxy chick he had absolutely no idea what he was supposed to do about he. He spent the whole time following her around with his nose planted in her vulva, the Vizla’s not the owners LOL!
When Dembe got home he was rather sexually frustrated and his bed took a real pounding for at least 90 minutes. It was a wonder he could walk straight afterwards. The joys of owning a boy dog!
Tuesday 18th May
Dembe was all over his dad today. He is picking up on his stress levels as Jay’s mum needs to go back onto treatment for her multiple myeloma, a type of cancer of the bone marrow. After losing his dad just 6 weeks ago, Jay is much more stressed than normal.
Dembe seems to be on a mission today to ensure that the lounge looks like a creche at all times. No soon as we have cleared up all his toys, he is back at the toy box pulling everything out and making a mess again.
This evening we have been playing with Cleo the Caterpillar. He plays with her more now that his big wicker bed is upstairs in my room. We just have to watch him for attempting to chew off her antennae.
Jay took Dembe out for an hours walk this afternoon to clear his head. He finds a walk on the common really grounding and helps him de-stress. It is one of the enormous benefits of having a dog that even on one of your darkest days you have to get out of the house and get some fresh air.
Dembe really does love playing with the carrot that I made him to replace his old one that Pets at Home no longer sell.
Wednesday 19th May
Today is a strange one as instead of being on a late night, Jay is on a 9-6 shift. As Dembe loves his Auntie Sophie walks so much we decided to still go ahead with it. Sadly Polo, Dembe’s best mate is still recovering from being neutered, so he won’t be joining them. Hopefully he will be back next week.
Dembe was so excited to see his Auntie Sophie and get out for a walk, despite the fact that he had been out for 3 walks already today. One when he got Jay up at around 5.30am, another at 7.30am before Jay left for work and then another at around 1pm when Jay popped back for lunch.
Sophie and Beth from Creature Kind took Dembe and the crew over towards Darts Farm near Topsham. The cattle that had been there last week had been moved so there was no danger of the dogs upsetting the mum’s with their calves. Unfortunately the cows had left a lot of cow pats behind, so Dembe and his mates had a “shitfest” covering themselves in cow shit, eating cow shit and just generally getting it all over themselves. Dembe also discovered a bog whilst he was out and decided to wade into it up to his armpits. He had a green body ( cow shit ) and what looked like black tights ( bog). Sophie took him home and washed him in her back garden before bringing him back to me!
Dembe had a wonderful time playing with Beths dog Dilly a Lurcher cross. Dembe was absolutely knackered when he got in.
Thursday 20th May
Jay is taking his mum to her oncology appointment today, so it was quite lucky we already had a a walk booked with Martin from Happy Dogs.
The weather was absolutely disgusting hammering it down with rain and blowing a gale so there was no video and no photos as the weather was just so terrible.
When he got back from his walk with Martin he needed a quick hose off in the back garden and then he went to sleep on the towel I had laid on the sofa for him.
Dembe was quite happy to snuggle up beside me on the sofa this afternoon.
Our friends Leanne and Liam came over on in the afternoon to take Dembe around the block for me as I didn’t want Jay having to race home especially in this really awful weather.
Jay got home at around 16.30-1700 and we took Dembe straight out. It was dry but still very windy.
Friday 21st May
Poor Dembe isn’t very well, he has lots of gunk coming from his eyes and is rubbing his eyes like crazy. As soon as the vets opened at 8.30am he rang up and our favourite receptionist and friend got us in at 10.30am.
Dembe was a very good boy at the vets although he wouldn’t touch the treat she gave him until he was sure he was leaving the building with his dad. The vet said she had a fox red Labrador as well and she couldn’t get over well behaved Dembe was as she said her dog was nuts.
Dembe has conjunctivitis in both eyes so now needs drops for a few days. He had to have a luminous green dye put in his eyes to ensure he didn’t have an eye injury like a scratched cornea. It was just conjunctivitis so that’s good.
Dembe was much improved after two doses of the eye ointment and there has been very little gunk and no eye rubbing at all since.
Saturday 21st May
We are having a lazy family day together after the week we have just had.
Dembe is booked in with Martin for a walk this morning as Jay is on an early shift.
It is a bit of a nightmare here as we have builders working directly opposite us, Dembe has decided that any noise that they make has to be immediately countered with barking and the occasional howling. He has really decided he hates them. Which would be fine if they were doing a quick job but the flats opposite have subsidence so the job is going to probably take a few weeks. Deep bloody joy.
The last photo captures him perfectly! Barking because there had been a noise outside. Being on guard all the time had worn him out come 6pm tonight and he was keen for an early night.
Tuesday 11th May
Today Jay is getting his second covid jab and he is day off. Dembe was not impressed when Jay left the house without him and spent much of the time his dad was gone looking out the window for him.
We had a very lazy day as Jay was really knackered after his jab, which is a known side effect.
It was the usual Daddy and Dembe love in today.
We were all in bed by 18.30, Dembe didn’t mind that at all and is more than happy to have an early night as it means cuddles on mums bed!
Wednesday 12th May
As Jay was late night today, Dembe has a walk booked with Sophie from Creature Kind. Dembe has sussed out the Wednesday routine, as soon as his dad goes to work he starts checking at the window every ten minutes or so to see if Sophie has arrived yet. When he isn’t checking at the window he is on the sofa nearest the front door.
We did manage some lovely cuddles before Sophie arrived.
He is loving the carrot I made him. I did have to sew the side shut again after the little demon managed to rip the seam. But he is carrying it around like the old one so that’s good.
Dembe was very pleased to see Sophie’s van pull up outside and he was also keen to see Beth who works with Sophie now. Dembe’s best mate Polo wasn’t there this week as he is recovering from being neutered. The boys will be back together soon though.
When Sophie brought Dembe back she said he had been really manic in a fun way, not a naughty way on the walk. We both put that down to Polo not being there. However it became clear that something wasn’t quite right as he kept scrapping at the floor like he was scent marking after he had done a poo ( only he hadn’t). He would stop for a few minutes and then start again. I ended up washing his feet off and checking them all over to see if he had something on his paws and he was trying to get it off. I ended up taking him up to bed early and getting him to go to sleep.
Thursday 13th May
Thankfully whatever was bothering Dembe last night has gone today. There has been no foot scraping at all. When Martin dropped him back from his walk I asked him about it. I had googled it last night and all it said was it can be a sign of anxiety, which ok Polo wasn’t there but he isn’t a very anxious dog. Martin suggested maybe he had come into contact with something that was like catnip but for dogs. I said how was he on the walk and he said if I hadn’t have said anything he wouldn’t have known anything was wrong.
Today we have the double whammy of building works. We have the subsidence works across the road and then next door to them we have engineers out installing gas to the flats that have never had gas until now. It means we have had pneumatic drills going as the pavement is cut into, countless vans coming and going. Just constant bloody noise. Dembe has been going mad barking at the window which makes it even more stressful.
I have been trying to distract him with games and cuddles so that he doesn’t feel the need to shout at all the workmen.
Friday 14th May
Today would have been Jay’s dad’s 69th birthday. Dembe is picking up on the change of mood and is very protective towards Jay. It has been a tough week for Jay and his family as Rogers ashes came home this week. Jay has been worried about his mum and as a consequence Dembe has been Jay’s shadow all week.
I knew when Martin put his mask on when he got out of the car that Dembe had been a sod on the walk. Lately Martin has been letting Dembe run from the van straight into the house and as he has been at the end of the drive he doesn’t need to wear a mask. As I suspected Dembe had decided half way through the walk to turn into a demon. Martin described him as nonchalant, arrogant and stubborn, which had me in stitches. He basically decided he wasn’t going to do as he was told, so Martin put him on the lead and he had to walk to heel for the rest of the walk. He was very meek when he got in. Clearly wanting to make amends with Martin he brought him his dinosaur as a gift to look at!
Dembe was knackered after being made to walk to heel and concentrate through the second half of his walk.
He went straight to sleep! Despite all the rain we have had this week he wasn’t too wet.
We had lots of cuddles in the afternoon.
Unfortunately Dembe has decided the last two days he is going to be a sod with his food. The last two meals he has turned his nose up at unless they have had fish added to them. We haven’t had this spoilt brat behaviour in ages. This time though instead of worrying Dembe’s meals get picked up and put in the fridge if he doesn’t eat them within 20 minutes of them going down. We no longer pander to him. If he is hungry he will eat. If he doesn’t eat his meals but will eat treats there is nothing wrong with him!
Saturday 15th May
We didn’t wake up until 8.30am this morning, Dembe was hungry so I got kissed until I was awake. However when he got given his breakfast he turned his nose up at it again, so after 20 minutes it got picked up and put in the fridge.
The barking hasn’t been too bad so far today as the builders aren’t around and there haven’t been a lot of cars going past the house. He tends to bark now when I am not in the room so he knows I can’t tell him off immediately.
We will be having a quiet weekend as Jay has had a full on week at work. As you can see from the photo his carrot toy goes everywhere with him!
Sunday 16th May
The weather has been shocking the last few days. Despite the fact he was already soaked he couldn’t resist having a swim.
We have never been so grateful for his Ruff & Tumble drying coat.
I will be honest and say straight off the bat that yet again I have failed to keep Dembe’s diary up to date. It has been a hard week and I have been poorly for a lot of it. I will however get his dairy out and put in front of me every day to ensure it’s completion. I will add in anything that I might remember from a particular day!
Monday 19th April
This week starts Dembe’s mammoth week of walks due to Daddy’s shifts this week. In total Dembe is booked in for 6 walks.
Dembe was out with his favourite older woman Shadow! He adores Shadow and you would never believe by the way she runs around that she will be 13 soon!
Dembe came back suitably knackered so that allowed me to get some sewing done. He decided to guilt trip me for not having 100% of my attention on him by going out in the garden and looking back at me.
If I am sewing he will either take himself off upstairs or he will lie in the garden looking back at me.
He was knackered after his walk and went to sleep relatively early. He made me laugh when I got up for a wee as he was fast asleep with his head on his dinosaur all 4 legs up in the air. Unfortunately as soon as I moved he rolled onto his side but it is still a funny photo.
Tuesday 20th April
Dembe is happy because his dad is home today, I am not sure how he is going to take Jay doing a night-shift tonight.
As Jay needed to get a nap in this afternoon so that he would be able to stay awake during his shift we took Dembe out earlier than usual for his afternoon walk. This was fine as Jay would be walking him several times in the evening to ensure he would be ok whilst he was working. The plan is for Jay to come home at 5am tomorrow morning and walk Dembe. His last walk this evening will be 10pm. So he will have actually had more walks out of it.
When Jay went to bed I fully expected Dembe to go up to bed with him like Frankie, Mollie and Willow our Weimaraners had done when they were alive. Dembe decided to stay downstairs with me. I was doing a little bit of sewing. Dembe went out into the garden and sat in his favourite chair. He looks huge in it this year!
He really does love his garden chairs bless him!
Dembe spent most of the evening downstairs with his dad unsure as to why he was refusing to come up to bed like normal. It really threw him. When Jay went to work Dembe went in and slept on his dad’s bed. He was obviously missing him loads. Normally when it is just me and the boy he sleeps in with me. When we are both home he will move between the bedrooms sleeping in the room where he feels he is needed most.
Wednesday 21st April
Jay popped home at 5am to give Dembe a walk around the block, before he came home at 9am. Dembe decided after his walk at 5am to sleep downstairs on his dad’s dressing gown. He really didn’t like his dad not being here overnight.
He was pretty tired after his first walk of the day and went to sleep pretty quickly after coming home which I was happy about as it meant he wouldn’t wake his dad up.
I think Dembe forgot his dad was home as at 1pm he went to the window and saw his dad’s car on the drive and started barking like mad. I had to quickly get him to be quiet so he didn’t wake Jay. I didn’t want him to get up without having a reasonable amount of sleep. When Jay came downstairs at 2pm Dembe was beside himself with excitement that his dad was home.
At around 3.30pm Sophie from Creature Kind came in to pick him up. He was very pleased to see her as he knows his Wednesday walk means he will get to see his partner in kind Polo the Labrador. As always Sophie has taken some brilliant photos of him and his friends. The first photo we got from Sophie was sent whilst he was out on the walk.
Dembe was pretty tired after two walks today, which suited us fine as we were both knackered as well! Sophie said that Dembe was an absolute angel. Twice she had to recall him from an enjoyable past time such as playing chase with another dog and he came straight back to her, She was very proud of him.
Thursday 22nd April
Today I had to get up early as we were expecting the delivery of our new TV ( our old one had developed green lines through the centre of the screen on Tuesday morning). I had a text last night that I happened to spot when I went to the loo, that delivery would be between 8-12. Dembe also has a dog walk booked today as Jay is on an early shift. He was not at all impressed at the fact my alarm went off at 7am and I got up.
He really isn’t a morning dog and he doesn’t like early starts at the best of times!
We came downstairs to find that daddy had been messing around with Dembe’s toys whilst we were asleep. It made me laugh but Dembe doesn’t like things being out of place and started barking at the toys until I removed the hats. Once the hats were off he was fine! Weird dog! He once went crazy because I had dropped my comb on his bed and it shouldn’t be there.
When the TV got delivered Dembe took a real dislike to the delivery driver. I have never seen him so wound up about anyone. He was barking like crazy all his back hair was stood up on end. It didn’t matter what I said he was having none of it. I was really glad when the delivery was over as that was when he stopped making a fuss.
When Jay finished his shift this afternoon we took Dembe out. When Jay got back to the car he asked me if I had noticed Dembe limping at all during the afternoon, which I hadn’t. He hadn’t walked back to the house from Martin’s van limping either. As it wasn’t too bad we have decided to rest him over the weekend with just short lead walks, as he wont go to the toilet in the garden. I also got some joint stuff off Amazon for him which will be coming tomorrow.
He is limping on and off this evening. He is managing the stairs and jumping on and off furniture so I am not overly concerned but will be keeping an eye on him.
Saturday 24th April
I woke up with a horrendous migraine at 6am, Dembe was sleeping beside me with his head on my face as he always does when I have a migraine. I took my migraine cocktail and went to sleep for a few hours. I came downstairs at around 8am when Dembe was having his breakfast.
Dembe is definitely walking better this morning and his limp is much less. I ended up going back to bed at 9am as I was feeling so awful. Dembe came up with me and slept all morning.
I had to come downstairs at 11am as Jay was going to work for a late shift. We had booked Max to take him out today but I had to cancel as I didn’t think it was in Dembe’s best interests to have a long walk on a sore leg. So I just have to hope that he settles and isn’t too manic today due to not having a long afternoon walk.
So far today he has been very good. We have had a few incidents of barking and being a pain but they have stopped after a few minutes and he has gone back to sleep.
Our baby is not a morning dog. He really dislikes his dad doing an early shift as it means he has to go out earlier than he would like. Today was no different. He really didnt want to get up when I got up even when I mentioned the words breakfast!
He was very thrilled though with his special delivery. Last week I had ordered him a Broadleaf treat box so that he could try out all the different types of treats they offer. I let him have a puffed pigs snout first ( as grim as it sounds ) and that was hungrily devoured.
He also tried the Lamb Spaghetti and he had a quick chomp on an airdried turkey neck.
Dembe isn’t booked in for a walk today as Jay is going down to Plymouth tomorrow, so he will go out with Martin from Happy Dogs then. In future though we will book in a Monday walk even if he is having a Tuesday walk as by this evening Dembe was like a coiled spring and going crazy in the lounge throwing his toys around!
It is very clear that he needs the walk on a Monday to burn off some energy. This evening his sprout and crocodile have been thrown around the lounge!
Tuesday 16th March
Dembe has a walk booked with Martin from Happy Dogs today as Jay is going down to visit his dad who has Motor Neurone Disease. Jay tried to get down and see him every fortnight now as his dad isn’t doing very well. After Jay left Dembe was a little unsettled for a while. He always struggles to cope when Jay leaves the house in his civvies without him. Leaving with his work uniform on he understands.
Dembe managed to share his drool around with all the other dogs on his walk. I have never known a dog who drools as much as Dembe does. Out on a walk when he gets excited he gets really foamy around his mouth which he loves to smear all over everyone humans and dogs alike!
Dembe was very pleased to see his dad when he came home and he brought him Cleo
Today I gave Dembe a pigs ear from his Broadleaf treat box. It was bloody enormous!
In the afternoon I managed to finish off a shawl I had been crocheting. When I took it outside to photograph Dembe came with me and ensure he did his job of Crochet Inspector.
Wednesday 17th March
Dembe woke up at 5am to go out for a wee, I woke up as well and realised I was well into a migraine. I took my meds and went straight back to sleep. At 9am Jay came into my bedroom to check on me and found Dembe and I fast asleep. Dembe was curled up beside me with his face resting against my face. He refused to leave my side and wouldn’t go and have his breakfast unless I came downstairs with him. This was very strange as Dembe has been waking me up for weeks now between 7am and 8am demanding to be fed, so for him to just lie beside me when breakfast was overdue was out of character.
Dembe is booked for a walk with Sophie today, so he will be seeing his mate Polo who he adores.
Dembe was starving hungry when he got back from his walk with Sophie and the crew. He always is hungry! I let his tummy settle for a bit and then got him his dinner as he was sitting in front of the Fridge all the time demanding to be fed. He really isn’t subtle when he is hungry.
We had an early night as after my migraine I was knackered.
Thursday 18th March
Dembe had a walk booked in with Martin from Happy Dogs this morning. Whilst I was sorting myself out for the day I decided to book Dembe in for a walk on Friday this week and the Friday of the following week.
Unfortunately Martin didn’t manage to get a video of the walk but he said that Dembe was a very good boy on the walk which is always nice to hear.
Dembe was knackered after his walk and quite happily slept on the lounge floor for a bit.
He spent the afternoon pottering around in the garden with his toy of the moment, his Toucan that was given to him by his friend Sam.
Friday 19th March
Jay was on an early shift today and clearly has way too much time on his hands before his shift!
I had another bloody migraine.
Dembe was booked in with Martin for a walk, which was handy as it gave me some time to let the medication to do its work before he got home.
At around 12.30pm there was a knock on the door, two of my friends arrived to drop some stuff off for Jay. It was a gorgeous day so we had a socially distanced chat, Corinne had brought Zach with her. Dembe was very curious so I put him on the retractable lead, he went out and then gave Zach a huge kiss. He was incredibly well behaved even when Zach made a grab for his ears and his tail. Whilst we were chatting Jay arrived home for lunch, Dembe was beside himself with excitement. Jay took him for a walk around the block.
Whilst Rachael, Corinne and Zach were here, Zach had a wafer biscuit thing. He kept deliberately dropping it on the floor so he could share it with Dembe it was very sweet.
Dembe was pretty knackered after such an exciting morning, with having a walk with friends and then meeting a baby. He slept most of the afternoon.
Tuesday 2nd March
Today Dembe has another walk booked with Happy Dogs, which is unusual for a Tuesday as normally Jay would be here. However Jays dad is very poorly so he is going to visit him. So that Jay doesn’t have to worry about Dembe wanting out whilst he isn’t here I have booked him in for a walk.
Dembe woke me up at 7.15am this morning demanding his breakfast. How he wakes me up is to stand at the end of the bed nearest the bedroom door and he just cries. His cries gradually get louder until they have the desired effect of waking me up! It seems very strange now having a dog that wakes me up to get his breakfast having spent a lot of last year in a constant battle with him trying to get him to eat! I never thought we would go back to having the dog that wanted to eat. The change is probably because we got tougher with him and if he doesn’t eat after 10 minutes the bowl gets picked up and he doesn’t get anything at all until the next meal time. Dembe will happily miss one meal but not two.
Some days he eats a lot and others days he may not finish a meal but he will eat the majority of it. He seems to self regulate his food quantities. We had both been expecting a dustbin on legs but our fussy boy isn’t like that at all.
Wednesday 3rd March
Well isn’t Dembe a lucky boy, he has another walk booked, Today’s walk is with Sophie from Creature Kind. As well as this walk he will go out 3 times before Jay goes to work, one for a long walk on the common and the other two will be toilet trips around the block. We have been having some quiet days as I have been really under the weather since my Covid vaccine last Friday.
Dembe had a lovely time on his walk today with his friend Polo a much lighter Labrador. They love playing Labrador games such as crazy zoomies and chase. Dembe found a tennis ball, so he enjoyed carrying that around. If Dembe dropped it Polo was only too happy to pick it up. Sophie said he behaved brilliantly today. We know now that if Sophie carries a tennis ball Dembe is 100% on his recall.
We have been laughing about Dembe’s tail being so high up when he is playing. It reminds us of our Weimaraner Willow who passed away in 2017. Whenever she was playing, if she had something that she thought either Mollie or Frankie would like her tail would go straight up.
When Jay came home after 10pm Dembe was too knackered to go downstairs and greet him. Dembe grabbed a toy and stood in the bedroom doorway his tail thumping against the door. It doesn’t happen very often that he is too tired to say hello to his dad but it is funny!
Thursday 4th March
Dembe is very spoilt this week as he has 4 walks booked with dog walkers. Today he will be going out with Martin from Happy Dogs.
Embarrassingly I managed not to hear Martin when he arrived for Dembe. I was upstairs with music on. My hearing is pretty poor at the best of times, for some reason I just didn’t hear the door bell or the knocking. As the bin men were outside I assumed Dembe was barking due to them. It took Martin ringing me for me to know he was waiting……mortified!
Dembe had a lovely walk, playing lots of Labrador games with Monty the chocolate Labrador. Dembe got a foamy mouth which is typical him when he has been playing lots and managed to get it all over Monty, who needed a wash before he went home.
The new dog food that I have ordered for Dembe has arrived today. I have started off with 3kg rather than a full bag just in case his majesty doesn’t like it. This one has a higher fresh meat content than what he is currently on and is cheaper per kg. Dembe’s appetite has really increased due to the amount of walking he is doing and the the dog food is is currently on is supplied in 7kg bags. With the new food I can get 12kg for only £15 more. That makes sense as that will last me longer. It is still a premium food so I know he is eating well, he doesn’t like raw food and he will still be having the food I make him.
I added a small amount of his new food in with his meal tonight, along with his old food and he ate the lot. So I am happy, if he doesn’t like stuff he will pick around it and leave it in the bowl.
Friday 5th March
Dembe didnt wake up until 5.50am, when he got up with me, I presumed that he must have already been out and I had slept through it as it was so late for him to rise. Especially when you consider he woke Jay up at 4.30am yesterday.
Jay is on a late shift today so he will take Dembe out 3 times before he goes into work. He will pop home at 17.00 to walk Dembe on the common before shooting back to work to finish the remainder of his shift.
I had a migraine today so I went back to bed at 9am, Dembe was more than happy to come back with me.
I had a Labrador shaped hot water bottle for much of the day. As I had frequent lie downs during the day.
Saturday 6th March
When I woke up this morning Dembe wasn’t with me, so when I got up I checked in Jays room for him. He was snuggled up on his dads pyjama’s and wasn’t too keen on getting up.
Dembe kept closing his eyes pretending he was asleep, as he was very comfy and warm on Jays bed. We had a long cuddle, I promised him breakfast as soon as we got downstairs.
We were having a lazy day as I was still feeling quite poorly after having a migraine the day before. Dembe was happy with that.
On and off during the day we had a lie down up stairs on my bed.
In the afternoon Dembe was full of beans and decided to empty his toy box.
He was very excited to see his dad when he got home, he was desperate to go out for a walk and burn off some energy. Once walked he settled down very quickly.
Sunday 7th March
Dembe went out around 5am for his first walk, Jay said it was minus 2 and frosty. They both came back to bed then and slept until gone 8.30am which was a lovely lie on as the humans definitely needed it.
Today has been spent catching up with jobs around the house and lots of Dembe games and cuddles as usual.
I know I am forever saying it but he is a ridiculously soppy dog. Today has been no exception, he has followed me everywhere and just wants to be cuddled. I have had several Dembe facials!
He had a nice long nap on the sofa in the afternoon.
Tuesday 23rd February
We had an early start today as I had to go to the doctors surgery for blood tests at 8.30am. Dembe was very perturbed by this drastic change in our routine so followed me everywhere whilst I got ready.
Whilst I was having my bloods drawn, Jay took Dembe for a walk around the town centre. This is good training for him and it has been a little while since we have been out and about in the town. So lots of new noises and smells to get accustomed to. They bumped into Jimmy and Peggy the Border Collies from our Obedience Training classes run by Happy Dogs. There was lots of woofing and play bows going on. Dembe thoroughly enjoyed himself.
When we got home we were all shattered from the early start to the morning. At midday we all went up to bed and had a nap. Dembe loved the opportunity to snuggle in to me and then later with his dad. He is always happiest when the three of us are all together.
We were feeling a little run down today so we decided to have an early night. Dembe was probably feeling the same as he was more than happy to go to bed early.
Wednesday 24th February
Jay is on a late shift today so Dembe has had three walks this morning before he has gone into work.
He has been a bit barky since Jay left for work, we have engineers working in the street and sometimes they are just the other side of the front door so Dembe is on high alert!
At around 2pm Sophie from Creature Kind arrived to take him out for a good run this afternoon so he can burn off some energy. Dembe was very pleased to see her, tail going crazy and barking when he recognised the sound of her van pulling up outside.
As usual Sophie took some cracking photos whilst Dembe was out on the walk with him.
He had a lovely time on his walk, he found a tennis ball and was exceptionally proud of himself. Carrying it for quite a bit of the walk. Sophie said he was a really good boy on his walk and again tried to give her a cuddle and a Dembe facial whilst she was drying him on the bag of the van.
He was starving when he got home from his walk and polished off a huge dinner.
He settled down really well in the evening, he was quite happy to follow me up to bed and stay with me.
Thursday 25th February
Jay was on an uber early today so Dembe was not happy that he had to go out for a walk at around 4.30am! He is not an early riser, he only gets up at around 7am when he wants his breakfast.
Today Dembe has another walk with Martin from Happy dogs.
Suzanne from Happy dogs took some lovely photos of the dogs on the walk today.
Dembe was a muddy pup when he got home so he was given a wash off outside in the garden
He was a super chilled out pup this afternoon, wanting cuddles and to lie on my lap whilst I held his lambs ear and he gave it a good chomp. As usual I got paid in saliva!
He was very pleased to see his daddy when he got home just after 3pm.
Friday 26th February
Jay was on yet another early today. When I got up Dembe wasn’t upstairs but downstairs fast asleep on the small sofa. Lying on his back airing his ginger nuts with no shame! I noticed immediately that he was walking quite gingerly and seemed obsessed with his bum and the base of his tail. I immediately suspected that he would need his anal glands emptied and that they maybe possbily infected.
Initially he didn’t want his breakfast, with a bit of cajoling he did eventually eat it all. He was really clingy and just wanting me to cuddle him all the time, which he doesn’t normally do first thing.
He looks really sad in this photo but I can assure you he wasn’t that bad.
Dembe had a lovely surprise just after 11.30am when his dad came home to collect us both as I had my Covid Vaccine booked. Whilst I was at the vaccine hub, Jay took Dembe to the park that was close by. Dembe and Jay had never been there before so it was very exciting for Dembe and chock full of new smells and sounds. Dembe had a lovely time running around and playing with Jay.
He was very sleepy this afternoon, hardly surprising after the week he has had and the run around in the park that he has had. He has been quite happy to play on the floor.
When Jay got home from work, we jumped straight in the car to take Dembe to his vets appointment. He was a very good boy at the vets, John was very pleased with him. He had one blocked gland that needed to be expressed. He came out of the vets practically skipping. Due to Covid we couldn’t go in with him and had to wait in the car park for him to be brought back.
You can almost see the look of relief on his face!
Saturday 27th February
Dembe woke me up around 4.20am wanting out so I got Jay up and he took him up. I must have fallen straight back to sleep as I have no recollection of them coming back. The next thing I knew it was 07.30am and Dembe was squeaking for his breakfast. I managed to keep him occupied until 8am and then we went into daddys room for a cuddle.
Dembe was much happier this morning as you can see from the photos. After his breakfast he kept bringing me lots of different toys to look at. He spent ages on my lap having a cuddle.
Jay and I are both feeling a bit rough after our Covid vaccinations. Dembe kept his energy levels low bless him.
I managed to make a huge boo boo I thought I had booked Max to walk Dembe this afternoon. Unfortunately I was an idiot and managed to book her for a months time by accidentally writing March instead of February. As you can imagine Daddy was not impressed!
Thankfully Leanne and Liam came to the rescue and took Dembe around the block for me just after 3pm. Jay will come home on his lunch hour to whizz Dembe up to the common so that he can have a run around properly. I feel terrible for managing to mess that up so royally.
I was being an over protective mum by putting him on two leads, I was worried that if his slip lead came off that Leanne may not be able to get him back, so I also attached the flexxi lead to his collar. He was a good boy for Leanne, although he refused to walk past a guy lying on the floor fixing his car. Leanne asked him to say hello to Dembe so he knew it was alright, which he did bless him. As they walked past Liam stage whispered “Dembe didn’t want to walk past as he thought he was dead”. Kids eh?
Jay popped home at 5pm and took Dembe up the common for a quick run. Not long after I managed to convince Dembe it was bed time! Bloody Covid jab making me feel horrendous.
Dembe is very sleepy this morning after getting up early with his dad, as Jay is on an early shift.
He got very excited when his dad came home for lunch, Jay got brought the giant carrot toy as a gift that he could look at but not touch. He had been very patiently waiting for Jay to arrive home at lunch time. He took up his dad watch position from 12.45pm.
The treats I ordered for Dembe arrived today. I got Dembe some dried goat sausage as he has had goat before and really enjoyed it. He hates it. Every time I give him a bit he spits it out looking at me like I have given him poop on a stick. It was expensive as well so I am gutted. I will give it a few days and then try him again with goat sausage. He is such a diva.
I managed to record him performing the sock trick. I was sat in my stocking feet as I had taken my slippers off. Dembe came up and started nibbling at the end of the sock and took it off. So I captured him doing my left foot. He loves doing the sock trick.
Tuesday 16th February
Jay was day off today, so as usual I have to watch the daddy and Dembe love in that goes on. As Dembe only gets two whole days a week with Jay unless he is on leave from work. Dembe likes to make up for his absences by getting in as many cuddles and love as he can get on those two days.
Whilst I was doing my physiotherapy exercises Dembe came in and settled on the bed keeping an eye on me.
I always take ages sorting myself out in the mornings getting ready to come downstairs. Dembe is always very patient and waits for me whilst I get ready. He just settles down on the bed and dozes whilst keeping an eye on me.
We had a lazy day after the stress of the weekend.
Dembe and I had an early night
I am gutted that this photo is so blury as it would have made an excellent TOT – tongue out Tuesday photo!
Wednesday 17th February
Well to throw us all out today Jay is on a 9-6 and not a late night. Plus Sophie from Creature Kind is on holiday, so Dembe won’t be hanging out with Sophie and her crew. I did book him in with Martin from Happy Dogs today as he is very used to going out on a walk on a Wednesday.
Dembe got picked up a little after 10am, for some reason my notifications when Happy Dogs are doing a Facebook live got switched off so I missed the video. You can see the video here if you have Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/415343231815686/videos/445680469889515. He had a fantastic time, he loves going out with Shadow. He has a bit of a crush on the older ladies.
Dembe was knackered after being out on his walk with Martin
I tried to get a photo of Dembe with his cushion that we were sent by Anne-Marie and Eddie, he wasn’t impressed.
We had a quiet afternoon as I came down with a migraine.
Dembe kept me company on the sofa, lying on me and getting me to hold his lambs tail so he could chomp down on it.
Thursday 18th February
Jay is late tonight which is unusual for a Thursday. I am sure that will throw me out all day. As Jay is late we decided to do Dembe’s walk differently. So when Dembe woke up at 5.30am instead of taking him up onto Woodbury Common Jay walked him around the block. Dembe was more than happy with that and as soon as he got home came up and went to sleep on my bed.
Then an hour after Dembe had his breakfast, Jay took Dembe up to Woodbury Common. He had a really good run around and met lots of dogs and had a play with them. He is such a little social butterfly! He has a better social life than either me or Jay.
He was a bit unsettled this afternoon. He kept going to the lounge window and looking out. He also decided that he wanted to go and sit on his favourite chair on the garden. He would sit out there in all weathers if he could. Strange boy.
Just before 5pm Jay popped home to take him out for another walk on the common, so that he got out and stretched his legs. He really enjoyed his run around and settled down very quickly for me this evening.
Friday 19th February
We are experimenting with the days that Dembe gets his professional dog walks on. I have noticed on the days that Jay has done an early shift, Dembe can be a bit fizzy with all the pent up energy he has because he only gets a 30 minute walk before Jay goes to work. So today Martin from Happy dogs is taking him out. It will catch Dembe out completely as he is not used to seeing Martin when daddy is on an early shift.
He was pretty tired fro the rest of the day. I was having a quiet day as I wasn’t feeling particularly well. Dembe as usual adapts his energy levels to how I am.
This afternoon he decided to treat me by jumping up on the sofa and dropping his lambs ear on my arm. My job was to hold it whilst he chews it and I get paid in saliva!
He really loves it if you will hold his chew for him whilst he has a good chomp. The problem with the lambs ears though is they are covered in hair and they stink! He adores them so I just have to put my qualms to one side.
Saturday 20th February
On my google photos today it came up with photographs of Dembe when he was tiny!
It seems like it was only yesterday he was a tiny wee baby. He will always be our puppy.
Jay is on another early today, the weather is bloody miserable and Woodbury Common has turned into a giant bog. It feels like all we have done all week is wash dog towels and tumble dry dog towels.
Dembe is a very sleepy boy today
As I was doing my physiotherapy exercises in his dads room as that has the most floor space he came in and joined me settling down on the bed.
For the last couple of weeks Dembe has decided to sit on the stairs and watch what is going on in the lounge from that vantage point. He used to run up the stairs when he was attempting to get away from the nail clippers etc but now he goes up at any point during the day. He is very happy to be petted through the banisters and will even give you a kiss. He just likes being on the stairs, the funny little sausage.
I love all his little quirks. He is very funny about things being in the wrong place. This week I got a new bathroom cleaner, as there was no room on the shelf it was put on the floor in the bathroom. As soon as Dembe came into the bathroom he started barking at it. He is like it when out on a walk if there is something on the path that he feels shouldn’t be there. Travis our first Weimaraner was exactly the same. Once having a melt down over a bathroom towel being draped over a garden chair. Silly babies.
I will be honest straight away and let you know my diary keeping fro Dembe has been rubbish this week! We have been busy getting odd jobs done and they’ve left me exhausted. Dembe’s diary simply got forgotten. I did remember to take photos of the boy.
The weather has been very wet this week, so Dembe has finished a lot of his walks pickled in mud. It was no different on Monday. I am so grateful for the fact he will patiently stand in the back garden whilst he is washed with the garden hose.
We have had a few lazy days to let dad unwind before starting the decorating. Dembe has really enjoyed having his dad at home. He is always happiest when his pack are all together. He has also liked having many walks around the block as his daddy spoils him with extra walks. Especially now that Daddy is not allowed to smoke at home.
Tuesday 2nd February
Today Dembe’s natural treats arrived from Broadleaf. Broadleaf Gun Dogs is the Kennel name of the Breeders that he came from from. Today he has had a a lambs trotter and a lambs ear. He has loved both!
We had another muddy walk this afternoon.
Again I am grateful that we have somewhere that we can wash him off and that he doesn’t make a fuss.
This evening it has been all about his carrot
Wednesday 3rd February
This morning I woke up and had no dog with me. I went into Jays room and found them cuddling up together. Dembe was playing with his banana toy which he hasn’t really played with until today. He got bought two for Christmas.
As we knew we would be decorating my room this week I booked Dembe in for a walk with Sophie from Creature Kind today and with Martin from Happy Dogs tomorrow. Whilst Jay was painting Dembe was a really good boy just lying on the bed , watching and sleeping.
Sophie took some cracking photos on the walk.
Dembe was a good boy on his walk, so we were pleased. I love the photo above the best out the photos from this week.
Dembe keeps lying with his head on the table, he will do this when Jay is eating as well so his nose is almost touching the plate. It is very funny as our Weimaraner Willow was the only dog that we have owned to do this.
We were all shattered this evening so had an early night.
Thursday 4th February
A second day of decorating. Dembe went out with Martin from Happy Dogs this morning. You can see the video from the walk https://www.facebook.com/happydogs.uk . Dembe won the award for the dog who had the most poo’s at 3!!!
Dembe was a very good boy all day just lying in the hall or on the bed whilst Jay worked.
Friday 5th February
We were all shattered after two full on days. We had a day of lounging about once my bedroom was all put back. I had a terrible headache all day so ended up in and out of bed. Dr Dembe came up with me every time I was in bed and slept right next to me having a cuddle.
Saturday 6th February
I found daddy and Dembe like this today when I woke up. Dembe adores his dad he has loved having him home this week.
We are all really knackered still after those 2.5 full on days of decorating. We had an early night.
Dembe would like to wish Emma a very happy birthday! Her birthday was on Sunday 7th February.
